Muted daytime red lipstick??

emsyj · 24/02/2012 15:47

I've seen a lot of folks recently with faaaaahncy daytime make up and I would like to give it a go too. I come across a lot of vintage lovers as part of my work and they always look great with a red lip, so I'm searching for the perfect muted daytime red.

I tried googling and found a few recommendations, but they all seem to be for a wine-y toned red, whereas I'm after something less dark and more of a soft stained colour IYSWIM. I don't want a wine or dark tone as my lips are too thin to take it (IMO) and I am very fair - have put a picture of myself on my profile so you can see my skintone etc.

Anyone help? I have seen this one recommended quite a bit and it looks as though it might be a sheer shade that looks darker in the tube, anyone ever tried it??

Thank you!

I really don't like heavy make up in the day

I think Max Factor do some kind of tint lip pie in felt tip type thing. . .

valiumredhead · 24/02/2012 15:55

lippie or lippy not lip pie because that is just wrong!

Ah, see I love the drag queen look!

It's more for work things really, as I sell 50s style wedding dresses and when I go to the bridal fairs they are all niche type vintage fairs and most of the exhibitors are done up 40s/50s style and I would like to be able to do the same. I'm also searching Amazon for a book to learn how to do victory rolls...

Aha! You need those donut thingies for victory rolls!

emsyj · 24/02/2012 15:59

OK, off to search on Salons Direct for 'donut thingies' !!! Grin

They have them in Super drug or Boots. You need to cut the donut in half then roll the hair round it. They did a modern day version of a victory roll on This Morning!

Buy a red like Chanel Scarlet or even the Kate Moss Rimmel one. Apply with a lipbrush so you can control the application so it's not too much for daytime. Won't be too draggy if you do a pale eyeshadow with maybe a bit of a fifties style eyeliner. Lovely Smile

I just came on to recommend Medieval!

It is a bit more sheer than it looks in the tube, but you if you apply it thickly then you get good coverage. I can't see any pics on your profile but I have fairly pale skin and a thin top lip and find it perfect for everyday. My other red lipstick is Chanel but I feel a bit too "I'm wearing red lipstick, look at me" to use that during the day time on a regular basis, and I find medieval the perfect step below.

Lipstick queen also does "sinner" and "saint" which are 90% and 10% pigment respectively. They come in different colours so one of those might be a better match? They have both on SpaceNK website saint and sinner. It might be a good idea to try and get into SpaceNK and see them in the flesh, but if you're only buying online I think Medieval is probably a safe bet.

emsyj · 24/02/2012 16:37

Just been on Amazon and bought a book about vintage hairstyling - hope it isn't too hard, have never styled my hair ever Blush.

Think I've resolved the photo thing too, hopefully my pic is up there now.

Maybe a trip to SpaceNK is called for then - but I do find it quite intimidating in there, plus all the gorgeous stuff is so expensive (but beautiful and I want it ALL). Will see if I can manage a trip with a strict cash-only budget just for one lipstick...

CLinique Dubonnet. V V wearable coraly red. Definitely red but not a wine-y red iyswim. Its fab. FIrst time Ive bought a red lippy and actually worn it in public

Havingkittens · 24/02/2012 22:20

Victory Rolls a la Fleur de Guerre, easy peasy, no donuts! I never use donuts, they make the rolls too big and comedic looking.

If you want a vintage look without full on red lipstick coral is a nice alternative. Something like MAC's Vegas Volt is pretty. Estee Lauder do some nice sheer reds in their Crystal range. Clinique do a nice sheer red called Parisian Red too but you can only get it on Ebay or possibly elsewhere online as it's only available in the US. Or just use a red lip pencil, like MAC's Redd which is less red than their Cherry lip pencil (my personal favorite) with a little lip balm.

Oops, sorry....

The best vintage hair book is the Lauren Rennells one, which you can buy here

emsyj · 24/02/2012 22:55

That's the book I've ordered! Grin - Ordered the make-up one too. Was nearly £50 for the two of them, so hope I can master the techniques. I'm reasonably confident with make-up, but hair is new territory...

I have an Estee Lauder Crystal lipstick that I really like, might see what red shades I can get in that range.

Nars Flamenca is a nice mid-sheer warm based red. Or else take any thicker red or coral ( revolt strawberry suede is gorgeous but have to get on eBay as its discontinued) and apply to back of hand, rub with middle finger to warm it up and apply patting on and working it in as a stain

otchayaniye · 25/02/2012 07:36

Bloody iPad, Revlon, not Revolt! (tho that could bean illamasqua lipstick name)

coffeeinbed · 25/02/2012 07:38

Nars Gypsy. Warn sheer red, very much a safe everyday one.
The Max Factop pens are lovely as well, there's a couple of reds.
Very light - Clinique Almost Lipstick, they have a couple of brand new shades in red, very sheer though.

scotsgirl23 · 25/02/2012 08:14

Another vote for the max factor lip pens - I think it's shade 9 that is a lovely red, very long lasting too. looks a bit less dressed up as it's matt, but I just stick some lip balm over the top if I want a glossier look.

Housewife2010 · 25/02/2012 16:18

I used to use Bobbi Brown Ruby Stain. Gorgeous sheer wearable red.

IAmOptimusPrime · 25/02/2012 16:41

I like mac ruby woo. Have a look here too about application as you could buy a dark shade and apply it lightly. Lisa Eldridge - 4 ways with lipstick

ujjayi · 25/02/2012 17:39

Chanel "Enigma" lovely brown-red. Also Chanel Coco Rouge in Rouge Orage. Brighter red than Enigma. Very vintage. Both gorgeous for daywear - I wear one or the other every day. Apply twice, with blotting and powder inbetween applications and finish with a blot. Guaranteed to stay on at least until lunch if not beyond.

emsyj · 25/02/2012 19:05

I have had a look online at some of the colours and (as you might expect) the colour representations are not very helpful, so I think I need to take a trip to a few counters. I've got some gift vouchers for House of Fraser so will take a look in there - which limits me a bit to Chanel, Estee Lauder and Clinique as my local store is only small (and I can't be arsed driving all the way to Manchester for Kendalls). Will take a look at the Chanel ones.
