Prehaps you can go to Hungry or Poland for cheaper dental treament.

Rindercella · 22/02/2012 22:47

I have been using an electric toothbrush with Crest 3D White Advanced Vivid Whitening toothpaste for the last few months & hey have made a huge difference to the appearance of my teeth.

if you can stand it (tastes horrible) you can make a paste with baking soda and water - it is the main active ingredient in most whitening toothpastes (still brush your teeth with toothpaste, then do the paste after). You can also buy the crest whitening strips on ebay and amazon (they work really quickly but are no good if you have sensitive teeth and they aren't overly kind to the enamel).

NannyPlumIsMyMum · 23/02/2012 00:59

I second MrsMartin - Crest Whitening Strips are fab .
You can buy it on Amazon ( you generally won't find it on sale in the shops ).
Also sonic toothbrushes are the best toothbrushes for getting white teeth .

ednurse · 23/02/2012 01:00

Crest White Strips! Buy from ebay.

crystalglasses · 23/02/2012 01:23

What does not costing the earth mean to you? Groupon regularly advertise dentists who do cutprice toothwhitening procedures eg a recent one was £69 instead of over £100. I had one done recently and it took me to 5 shades whiter (so not a Hollywood smile) and I was also sold a tooth whitening brush (for about £25) which is mean to last about 4 months if used weekly

spiderslegs · 23/02/2012 01:31

Noo - all you need is Pearl Drops Whitening - really - I kid you not - I was a smoker with stained teeth- tried everything - went for regular polishes - but in-between they were stained - horribly stained - it's the only toothpaste that did anything for me - slightly abrasive but bloody marvellous - really - shiny bright (not white - but who wants that?) - shiny clean - no stains.

You don't want white bright - trust me.

crystalglasses · 23/02/2012 01:59

I agree that Pearl drops is very effective but it needs to be used sparingly as it's extremely abrasive

Bonsoir · 23/02/2012 07:29

You can improve your teeth no end by using an Oral B Vitality toothbrush with either a FlossAction or DualClean (my favourite) head, and Elgydium toothpaste. And make sure you floss a lot too!

KateSpade · 23/02/2012 08:08

Watching this thread! i would love teeth veneers, but they are so expensive

alwaysrunninginheels · 23/02/2012 08:16

As a dentist I would say that the whitening toothpastes only really remove surface staining and are abrasive so you are not going to change the actual colour of your teeth. Professional whitening can do that but it can be expensive- prices vary hugely. And the downside often is very sensitive teeth for a while....and having done it myself I can vouch for the fact that can be more than a tad uncomfortable. And I have to say really really white teeth just look unnatural and are not flattering!!!!

KateSpade · 23/02/2012 08:23

Hello Dentist, Grin
Please invent something like veneers but at a much cheaper price, i can see how you'd make a lot of money aswell... Wink

ReallyTired · 23/02/2012 09:08

cheesesarnie, I am sorry if I offended you. However some of these suggestions could trash your tooth enamel. Its something you need professional advice on.

Seriously dentistry in Easten Europe is a lot cheaper than the the UK.

www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/destinations/europe/hungary/738488/Dental-tourism-in-Hungary.html

Prehaps the question is how much are you willing to spend to have nice teeth?

QuietOhSoQuiet · 23/02/2012 09:11

keep an eye on groupon,I have bought a laser whitening treatment for £29 reduced from some silly amount

MerlinFromCamelot · 23/02/2012 09:21

was looking in to this a few months ago but when I rang my dentist I was told that the procedure was £399 which I find a bit OTT. Some local beauty salons offer the treatment for £99 which I would be happy to pay. However, I'm not sure why there is such a big difference in price, surely there must be a big difference in the products they are using. Are these cheaper treatments safe?

I don't smoke, but drink a lot of coffee, which i'm not prepared to give up.

SimoneD · 23/02/2012 09:29

Have to say that the treatment you get from your dentist for £300+ is a mould made to the specifications of your teeth which you then wear each night with the whitening treatment to get the desired effect. It has an immeasurably better effect than the cheap laser treatments you see on groupon. Ive had both and wish Id not wasted my money on the laser. And once you have the moulds you can buy the replacement whiteners so the follow on treatment is alot cheaper.

BooMagoo · 23/02/2012 11:59

A friend of mine had her veneers done in Bulgaria, while she was working there.
It was about 5 years ago. The cost? 8 pounds each.

Bonsoir · 23/02/2012 12:02

My mother, who is in her 70s, had a whitening mould made by her dentist last year. Her teeth look great - but they were a lot more discoloured than mine are, being a lot older.

alwaysrunninginheels · 23/02/2012 17:22

Simone is right that the treatment at the dentist involves having made to measure trays that fit your teeth exactly, which in turn means the bleaching gel is held in close contact with your teeth and does not ooze out and contact the surrounding gums-which is good as the gel is really rather damaging to gums! Our lab charges between £25-28 for each arch tray and few people want only one arch done. Likewise the actually bleaching gel is really rather expensive- i think the last ones in our practice were over £100 and then there is vat on top so i honestly don't think that you would find many practices charging less than £300!!!
Not sure about what the stuff us at a beauty salon but i would say from my point using something professional(and yes that does generally mean not cheap) would be the way to go. Your smile is one of the first things a person notices about you so its worth having a good one.
AND as a note of caution- i work in a clinic where we see a lot of polish patients and while there are obviously a lot of excellent polish dentists we do see some shocking dental treatment- really really dreadful that patients have had done in Poland. Now by now way am i saying thats the standard usually BUT i would say the best best way to find a good dentist is by recommendation! And sometimes that means it can be expensive!! I have seen young patients who have had such bad treatment abroad that the only treatment option for them is to have a full clearance....all teeth removed!! So i really really advise caution and to go to someone recommended!!! PLEASE!!!

simonthedog · 23/02/2012 19:32

I'd only advise peolpe use a toothpaste that contains fluoride. If you use a toothpaste without fluoride you will have a higher chance of getting dental decay. Elgydium has no fluoride, so be careful. If you are changing to a new toothpase always check it has fluoride in.

AKissIsNotAContract · 23/02/2012 21:04

Another dentist here. I second all that running has said. I would not recommend elgidium toothpaste either.

AKissIsNotAContract · 23/02/2012 21:08

Also it's illegal for anyone other than a dental professional to do tooth whitening as it is considered to be part of the practice of dentistry. So unless beauty salons are using dentists/hygienists to do whitening then they shouldn't be doing it.

Camblewick · 23/02/2012 21:14

Can I be cheeky and ask which toothpaste our dentists here use? That'll be the one I'm buying! Grin

AKissIsNotAContract · 23/02/2012 21:19

I alternate between colgate total and sensodyne repair and protect or rapid relief. As long as your toothpaste has fluoride in it that is the most important thing. You should also spit it out but don't rinse, especially before bed, so the fluoride can coat the teeth.
