Thank you!

Apparently, if you do not want to have a fake Hollywood smile, your teeth should not be whiter than the white of your eyes.

Having said that, I am reluctant to whiten my teeth as I don't want them to become sensitive. I'd rather have slightly discoloured teeth rather than painful ones.

TIDDLYMUM · 23/02/2012 21:31

I have good strong White teeth but suffer with staining due to enamel damage caused by childhood illness . I used to have them cleaned by the dentist every 3 months. I tried Theramed Whitening Toothpaste ( in a small bottle as opposed to a tube) it's about a pound and available all over. Amazing stuff- no staining at all and I now have normal bi annual cleans as that's all I need:))

Reading this I bet you are imagining me with a big set of horse teeth :0

Give the THeramed a try- couple of weeks should see a difference.

I would avoid any sort of budget whitening treatment like the plague.....

suebfg · 23/02/2012 21:34

I had a professional whitening treatment a few years ago - cost £££ at the time but my Colgate Max One has brought better results, is less than £5 a pop and doesn't make my teeth sensitive. Try this first before wasting your money

Grumpystiltskin · 23/02/2012 21:39

Another dentist here. I use whichever fluoride toothpaste is on special offer or whatever the rep might have dropped off this month. IMHO, a lot of it is marketing. Pearl drops/baking soda is not a great idea routinely. Very abrasive.

BonfireOfKleenex · 23/02/2012 23:21

Question for the dentists - is this stuff any good? Biorepair

I'm on my second tube and my teeth definitely seem whiter (though it's not marketed as a whitening treatment, it just claims to somehow fill in any gaps in the enamel). I'm slightly sceptical about this claim, but it's only £3.99 and seems to do the job re whitening at least.

alwaysrunninginheels · 24/02/2012 00:27

I use any toothpaste that I find in the practice....we seem to get endless samples of sensodyne so I use that.....anything with fluoride in it!!!!

mrsmartin · 24/02/2012 00:30

alwaysrunning - I think I know the answer to this already but is there anyway (officially or not) to whiten a denture past its original shade?

AKissIsNotAContract · 24/02/2012 06:54

Bonfire: bio repair contains no fluoride. I wouldn't use it.

alwaysrunninginheels · 24/02/2012 06:54

Mrsmartin-No sorry you can't. Am afraid the only answer is to replace it. But sometimes they do get really stained and you can remove that but no lighter than it was originally!

Bonsoir · 24/02/2012 07:12

I note what you say about fluoride, but here our dentist tells us not to buy fluoride toothpaste as the water is already so highly fluoridated.

The other thing I like about Elgydium toothpaste is that it gets your teeth so much cleaner than any other toothpaste I have tried...

AKissIsNotAContract · 24/02/2012 07:18

Where do you live bonsoir?

Bonsoir · 24/02/2012 07:22

Paris. The dentist does some complicated calculation according to your address and how much water you drink and then tells you what toothpaste to buy!

Bonsoir · 24/02/2012 07:23

Every member of the family gets a different toothpaste recommended, by the way - none of this supermarket stuff!

whomovedmychocolate · 24/02/2012 07:31

FWIW I get my teeth descaled twice a year and that seriously lightens their colour (although mine are pretty white). The issue is often tartar build up making your teeth look yellow if, like me you mainline coffee on a daily basis. It's horrible having a descale (and costs about £50) but does make a big difference.

anniewoo · 24/02/2012 07:32

Why are Crest Whote Strips not sold in shops/ pharmacoes in the U.K.? Surely tjere is a huge market for them.

Grumpystiltskin · 24/02/2012 10:21

Because they are illegal in the EU.

mrsmartin · 24/02/2012 11:52

yep - as I said before they work 'reaaaalllly' quickly but they aren't kind to your teeth.

otchayaniye · 24/02/2012 11:53

200 quid at dentist for trays and bleach.

Bluesue26 · 24/02/2012 12:42

Right, just ordered some of those strip things - only 5 days worth but I'm gonna give it a whirl and report back.
Over and out :)

cheesesarnie · 24/02/2012 13:30

thanks everyone.
reallytired-you didnt offend but was unsure what you ment so didnt know if i should have been offended iyswim!Grin

I had mine done at our local beauty salon by a dental nurse and it cost £150 ,which i didn't think bad .
She used a laser and gave me a pen to use at home to top up ,i'm really pleased with them they look great!

SayBoo · 24/02/2012 15:22

I paid £100 to get a mould made at a dentist (Groupon often have deals), which I can now use whenever I like. I buy a higher strength bleach in syringes on Amazon, as the bleach my dentist gave me was very weak and my teeth were quite stained. They arent Hollywood white, but they are loads better.

I didnt find Crest Strips very good, to be honest.

anniewoo · 24/02/2012 21:01

Why are Crest White Strips illegal in the E.U.?

Grumpystiltskin · 24/02/2012 21:54

Because of the active ingredient here and this is why you shouldn't choose someone who isn't a dentist to do it.
