I've just discovered how flattering waistcoats are ... but are they "in"?

I've been wearing a men's dark grey suit waistcoat today and it really does make me look so much better. Hides the spare tyre well and also gives a bit of shape (as well as keeping me nice and warm). But I've only been in the house. Are waistcoats in or out at the moment [very out of touch fashionwise]. Please could someone link to some that wouldn't look hideously out of date and would suit a 40-something. Thanks everyone/anyone Smile

I have heard that they are flattering as well -- however, as I don't think they are "in" I have never tried one on.

Saw this one when browsing today:

Thanks mirpuppet. That's quite nice - I like the idea of wearing a striped top underneath it too - maybe I'll get one of them as well Smile

I don't give a flip if they are 'in' or not and quite often wear one for work. They are good for the well-norked if worn fairly close fitting but open with a scoop-neck top underneath.

If there was a free shipping code -- I would order just to experiment with some items in my closet.

Not many sizes left, but I have seen a non model wearing one on the Pepperberry Facebook photos and it is very flattering.

Pepperberry one looks really nice. Boo Hoo none in my size.

Saw loads of waistcoats when I was shopping for work clothes, mainly in Primark/H&M, so they're definitely around.

I think waistcoats are always in fashion. I was looking for a plaid one just today as I love the 90s way of wearing them.

I don't mean to be nasty but I have a hard time imagining how a waistcoat could look fashionable or even contemporary. What would you wear it with?

AgeingFop · 22/02/2012 09:35

I wore an old (but presentable) waistcoat over my shirts at work last year when it was too cool for just a shirt but not yet cold enough for a jumper.

A colleague unkindly suggested I looked like a snooker player! I ignored him and carried on.

Nice posts + username combo AgeingFop Grin

I'm thinking of getting one to dress up plain shirts, like this: www.seasaltcornwall.co.uk/women/clothing/jackets_waistcoats/serge_waistcoat_potash.htm
Feeling unsure if it's stylish or a bit naff
