Not a big wearer of makeup but I have an event coming up and would like to recreate the 40s look. Now I know that there is a vast amount on offer. I have a modest budget but I'm aiming more of the Bourjois/ No 7 standard rather than Christian Dior.

Can anyone recommend a good plummy red (not orangey and not vampire-ish) lipstick that stays on for a long time? I sometimes find the darker shades a bit dry as well.

Thanks in advance.

I wear a good lip liner in a really red scarlet colour and then vary the lipstick over the top. Bourjois is a good choice as I think made by Chanel?
I wear Chanel and really rate the pigment in their lipsticks and pencils. mAC also v good for red lipstick

I second chanel but bourjois or max factor should come pretty close. My advice is to fill in your whole lip with lip liner, apply lipstick, blot with tissue, lightly dust with powder, then apply lipstick, blot, dust, apply lipstick. It will last all night without the need for yuckky lipcote.

Ah, red lipstick, wear it almost every day.

My favourites to try (avoiding the very orangey ones)

Illamasqua Box (she's a friend)
Nars fire down below (dark blood red)
Clinique vintage red
Ysl rouge pur 11
Mac Russian red
Chanel fire
Bobbi brown red.
Nars afghan red (more a plum)
Lipstick queen red in sinner version

Oh, and the rimmel Kate moss red one's ok too

Use a nude lip liner all over and blot a few times

Ooh, thanks for the tips and the suggestions of which to try.

MAC's original Viva Glam or Dubonnet are both really nice 40s reds. More brick than plummy though.

Bourjois is not made by Chanel, they are just owned by the same company.

Bourjois Sweet Kiss range is great - one of the Rouge ones should work.

And I agree with the apply, blot, dust, apply, blot, dust, apply approach for keeping it on!

If you're doing the 40's look, don't forget a black liquid eyeliner to create a flick - that and the lippy is all you'll need to be completely vintage!

NoWay you've predicted what I was about to ask next! About liquid eyeliner. Now, it's been a while since I've applied it as I'm not very good at it. I was wondering whether kohl liner would do just as well since that is usually what I would use but I guess that doesn't have the same intensity as liquid liner.

I'm making a shopping list for Boots!
