is size 8 a big foot?

I don't mean a yeti.

But if you are a size 8, do you every have difficulty finding shoes that don't look like they are made for clowns?

I was just looking for some nice plain shoes for everyday, and struggling to find them in my size without them being men's shoes/looking Clyde-built. When I was a teenager it was worse, as I used to be sent to the men's shoe section of shops, so at least there are some places that cater for the larger of foot now.

what are the extremes of foot size, would you say, and what size are you? Do you think your feet are big or small?

I'm an 8.5 so some high street 8's fit some don't. In school i remember I had to wear boys shoes in my final year as the 'allowed' shoes on the list didn't fit.

It was hell.

fortyplus · 19/02/2012 19:56

I'm size 8 and I'd say the trick is to keep an eye on the shops as the season changes - most shops seem to stock a limited range beyond size 7. M&S are ok for work shoes, plain courts etc. John Lewis go up to size 9. Also Evans the larger ladies' clothes shop, though I've found that their shoes seem to be designed for fat feet.

BBisBBack · 19/02/2012 19:57

I would say its relative to height! Im 5'8 size 8 but if you were 4ft with size 8s you'd look clowny i suppose!
I buy cheapos from primarni for everyday wear as well as new look etc but I don't struggle to buy shoes Grin

cybbo · 19/02/2012 19:57

I'm an 8 and can honeslty say I've never had any trouble finding decent shoes, ever

I dont really think of myself as having big feet, they are in proportion to me

Are you looking for anything in particular?

miaowmix · 19/02/2012 19:58

I'm a 37 - size 4 - so yes I would say size 8 is pretty big. I have tiny hands and feet though!

InTheSunshine · 19/02/2012 19:58

I'm an 8 or 8.5. Next do good shoes that always fit me & don't look like clown shoes. Madamcholet I feel your pain!

miaowmix · 19/02/2012 19:59

5 ft 6 (well nearly) so my feet are probably disproportionately small!

Sneezeblossom · 19/02/2012 19:59

Not anymore, I used to have terrible trouble getting shoes though.

cybbo · 19/02/2012 19:59

I would say a 4 is pipiscule Grin

aniseed · 19/02/2012 20:01

I am a size 9. I really struggle to get shoes although things have improved in the last few years. I had to wear boy's shoes at school and I have really narrow feet so they were like boats - hence lots of bullying.

I can get shoes from Next catalogue (don't always stock them in the shops) but they don't always fit. Could prob do with a 9.5. Brantanos are also good but the styles can be very frumpy. I don't own many pairs of shoes and when I find some that I like I look after them really well.

Finding work shoes is the worst because they need to be comfortable but look smart and fashionable. It's a bit easier to find sandals, slippers etc.

I do not like my feet at all and it is really obvious to me that they are HUGE!

miaowmix · 19/02/2012 20:01

pipsicule is a good word Grin. I do think everyone has huge feet though - I met a 6 year old boy who had bigger feet than me. How is that even possible?

RightUpMyRue · 19/02/2012 20:03

If you are 4ft nothing then size 8 feet are pretty damn big but if you're 5ft 9 (like me) then no, size 8 isn't big, it's perfect.

I used to struggle, years ago, to find shoes in my size but really not anymore, most shops stock to an 8 or 9.

You have choose the style carefully though so they don't end up looking too long.

MrsDmitriTippensKrushnic · 19/02/2012 20:04

I have size 9 feet, but I'm 5'9 so it works Smile

I can't remember when I last bought shoes straight off the high street - it would have been something from Evans which go up to a 10 or 11 I think, but are all wide fitting which is a pita as I don't have wide feet.

TBH, I live in Converse and DMs which are pretty unisex anyway.

Kveta · 19/02/2012 20:05

I'm not particularly tall (5' 7'') but come from a family of big footed men! (DF is 12, DB 12, Uncle is 14-15, cousins (his kids) are both 13-14!). However, my mum and sisters are all 5-6, and one sister is 5'8'', so I look clowny next to them :o

DH is the same size as me :o

I'm not looking just now, got some nice Hush Puppies which are slip on and comfy (am pg with a toddler to chase, and SPD setting in, so these are good points!!). But was musing on it with DH earlier, as it looks like DS has inherited the big foot gene from me, and is getting expensive as his feet just keep growing!

I'm on the other end of the scale - I'm 5ft4 (avg height for british women) but a size 3. The average foot size is a 6 so if you are an 8 you are closer to the average than I am!! I can get my tootsies into size 13kids ugg boots and still walk comfortably!!

mrsmartin · 19/02/2012 20:32

Also, the better more expensive the shoes, the bigger they fit - someone who needs a 9 in new look would probably only need a 7.5 or 8 in a premium italian design (I often take a 35 and still need an insole)

miaowmix · 19/02/2012 20:33

Mrs Martin the very good thing about having small feet is buying children's shoes - I have bought Boden ballet pumps and birkenstock style sandals as they are so much cheaper. I think children's fitflops also go up to size 37 or 38 as well.

mrsmartin · 19/02/2012 20:37

yy - and you don't pay vat Wink

wouldn't be seen dead in fitflops...

Trills · 19/02/2012 20:41

I am a 41, which is 7 or 8 depending on the shop.

Most shops do all of their regular range up to a 42, don't they?

I do think some glam-looking shoes look nice when they are small and pretty but end up looking like transvestite shoes when scaled up.

Trills · 19/02/2012 20:41

In answer to the question, 8 is a large foot but not so large that you should really have trouble finding shoes.

miaowmix · 19/02/2012 20:42

yep. I don't actually own a pair but quite like the blingy sequin ones, that's ok, we don't all have the same taste! Grin

wildfig · 19/02/2012 20:46

I have size 8/42 and get most of my shoes from either Clarks or M&S - not particularly because they're the most stylish but because Kurt Geiger/KG/Carvela think a small 41 is fine as their biggest size. Office does a 9, on the more fashionable side of things, as does Top Shop. I particularly loathe the way that Clarks size 8 sale rails only ever have a fraction of the stock of the other sizes, and mostly in flat styles, because obviously tall girls with big feet don't want to make themselves look any taller than they already are...

I quite like my feet. I prefer to think of them as long, rather than big - I've got very pale skin, so I always do my pedicure in a bright varnish, and it's like having jewelled toes. My feet are also the one part of me that doesn't put on weight and has an elegant bony quality. Grin

cybbo · 19/02/2012 20:48

Ah, wildfig you have what we call in the trade ,'chicken feet'

I have steamroller feet- wide and flattened

wildfig · 19/02/2012 20:49

cybbo if only! Mine are pretty wide too. But if I angle them...

Mrsrobertduvall · 19/02/2012 20:54

I am 9.5 and it drives me mad getting nice, slim fitting shoes.
All new clothes have to planned around finding shoes.....
I have ben perusing the Crispins catalogue, but at average price £150 a pair I will have to be selective.
Next shoes used to fit me, as did Clarks but I am now in the wilderness that is outsize. I am subject to the raised eyebrows of sales assistants.
