is size 8 a big foot?

I don't mean a yeti.

But if you are a size 8, do you every have difficulty finding shoes that don't look like they are made for clowns?

I was just looking for some nice plain shoes for everyday, and struggling to find them in my size without them being men's shoes/looking Clyde-built. When I was a teenager it was worse, as I used to be sent to the men's shoe section of shops, so at least there are some places that cater for the larger of foot now.

what are the extremes of foot size, would you say, and what size are you? Do you think your feet are big or small?

Expensive make up = pollyfilla for the cracks trills. Grin

Oh I am not that bad but I do look stern.

Mrsrobertduvall · 19/02/2012 21:34

Katie Long do shoes online up to an 11....there is 10% off from Instyle at the moment...put Instyle at the checkout.

BikeRunSki · 19/02/2012 21:34

I am an 8 if it translates to 42 (but not 41 unless it's Birkenstock) but my feet are really wide. If a shoe is too narrow (usually) I can't do the trick of going up a size. Two pgs havn't helped my foot width!

M&S, Clarks, Next, FitFlop, Birkie, DM, Land's End all fit. I got some Boden 8s once and laughed at how small they were! Unless I am at work, I tend to live in DM "Fashion" boots, Fitflop sneakers, Converse or Birkies. Iwear a lot of "flat and chunky" shoes; have trouble with formal/pretty and heels.

PommePoire · 19/02/2012 21:35

Here fabulous shoes for sizes 8-13 designed by a woman who wears a 10. As far as I know she is the only retailer to have scaled up the whole shoe or boot, rather than what most high street shoe retailers do, which is to lengthen just the sole, but fail to adjust the depth of the toe and other details in proportion, which leads to the 'clown shoe' look. She offers a lot of fitting advice by email if you're not sure which size and fit to try.

Jellykat · 19/02/2012 23:22

Thanks for the links Pomme amd Mrsrduvell, have bookmarked.. i don't do heels - am a Leopardskin 'high top'/ biker boot type, but will keep looking on those sites just in case. Smile

Chandon · 20/02/2012 07:39

I wear size 8, I don't think they look big on me at all, not even a bit.

But I am 6ft 1, so I guess it is proportion to my hight?

I have a friend who wears size 9.

there is more choice all the time.

alessthandomesticgoddess · 20/02/2012 08:05

I'm 5ft10in and I'm an 8/9 depending on the shop. In Primark, Shoe Zone and New Look I need a 9. In Evans I can get an 8. I need the width too though.

Kveta · 20/02/2012 09:38

thanks for the link Pomme!

It's heartening to find that there are other bigger footed women out there, I am getting so fed up with shoe shopping and them not having certain styles in my size. Clearly I am not alone though.

I do wear mainly flat shoes (can't really do heels), but am rotund, so no matter what shoes I wear they look absurd :o And I am clearly a bit of a short arse too, next to all you leggy ladies! also, I have horrible feet in general (hard skin, crappy nails - I do not do sandals ever!), but they are pretty average width I think (not narrow, certainly, but not fat either).

mrspnut I am the same with breaking shoes in. I got some hush puppy shoes recently though (as previously mentioned), and they are the first shoes I have ever bought which didn't cause blisters!! I had some el natura lista shoes, which were so so comfy once broken in, but my word, the blisters they inflicted were spectacular!

I'm 5'9 with size 8's. It is my pleasure in life to find pretty shoes in my size after a childhood sent traipsing round every shoe shop trying to find huge, heavy leather boats in my size.

It won't surprise you to learn that I have a room lined with shoes boxes sorted by type and colour will it?

wildfig · 20/02/2012 11:19

kveta celebrate your lovely long feet! Either treat yourself to a spa pedicure or buy yourself a Microplane footfile/Ped Egg. You can't diet them shorter, so you might as well love them with pretty nail varnish and foot cream. There's something really satisfying about feeling a soft foot emerge from the wintery hoof - I do mine in front of something good on tv and mentally award myself £40 for DIYing.

I've bookmarked that link too pomme - thanks!

wildfig · 20/02/2012 11:20

Blush I meant 'you' in the general sense of 'you', not you personally...

noddyholder · 20/02/2012 11:30

My ds and dp are 8s it looks big to me but I am a 4 so what do I know!

Kveta · 20/02/2012 12:03

wildfig what foot cream works on wintered feet though?! will look into pedicures one day, maybe not this year though.

Enjoy ha ha, if I didn't have children using up my nice shoe fund, I'd be doing the same :o

I was talking to a colleague about this - she's a size 3, so teeny, and she said nything above a 6 seems giant to her :o Whereas anything below a 4 seems miniscule to me!

wildfig · 20/02/2012 12:11

you need to get the worst of the dead skin off first, so you're better off investing in a good foot file (the puny emery board types never put a dent in my hooves) so the cream can sink in. Diamancel files last ages, but I swear by my Microplane foot file which is like a cheese grater for feet; looks fierce but it does work brilliantly. I bought mine from eBay.com.

Soap & Glory do a good foot cream, which is meant to be an overnight treatment but if you slather it on and sit in socks for an hour, it does its stuff. L'Occitane foot cream is also fab, if a bit pricey; Neutrogena is an effective budget option.

It sounds like a lot of faff, but once you get into it, pedicures can be v satisfying to do at home - there's far more of a transformation than with a manicure (piles of dead skin sloughed off, for a start, bleurgh) and they last so much longer without chipping.

auldspinster · 20/02/2012 12:12

My pet hate about being an 8 is that some shops consider it to be a size 41 whereas i'm definitely a 42.

trikken · 20/02/2012 12:18

Im size 9-10 and find it a pain to find decent shoes. Even simple ones are expensive. I wear mens to work as I cant find any suitable womens ones.

Disputandum · 20/02/2012 12:31

Auld spinster - that drives me mad too...that in some shops a 42 is a perfectly acceptable and well stocked 8, and in others it is a rarely-stocked 9...why?

I tend to shop at Hobbs, LK Bennett or Clarks but I know that most High Street shops stock 8/42 (supermarkets, Next, Dune, Nine West etc).

However, Kurt Geiger, Carvela and most expensive designer brands only go up to a 41 and call that an 8. I will never forget the shame of asking for a 42 in Radley and the assistants fell about laughing, telling me that nowhere sells shoes in a 42 because that is a 9.

And even good old John Lewis told me just yesterday that they don't have anything at all in a 42, except the odd style online.

PommePoire · 20/02/2012 16:00

This is why Catherine, the woman who's business: Amber and Jade I linked to above started her company. She could not find well made, attractive shoes for her size 10 feet and all high street offerings were just longer soled versions of a standard size 5 shoe, so not flattering and all out of proportion. It is so worth spending a little money on some nice shoes that suit you and that really fit you. Try emailing her, she is so helpful and will give advice on fit.

Solo · 20/02/2012 16:07

I've been a size 8 since being a young teen. Unfortunately, I have extra broad feet too :( I'm tall and would like to say I'd look daft with small feet, but my cousin is over 6ft tall and looks perfect in her size 5 heels.
I hate having to buy shoes, but bigger sizes are a whole lot easier to find than they were in the 70's and 80's.

saoifre · 20/02/2012 17:56

I'm a size 8, 5'11: luckily I like Clark's, they always have my size and go up to a nnie I think. When I was a teenager it was so hard to find shoes to fit but it's not nearly so bad now.

saoifre · 20/02/2012 18:02

oh, love that Amber and Jade site, PommePoire.

EndoplasmicReticulum · 20/02/2012 18:04

They changed 8s a while back. I'm an 8 (42). However, in many fashion type shoe shops an 8 is now a 41. That's just cheating.

What used to irritate me also is that even shops that did a proper 8 would only order in about 3 pairs, so they were always sold out.

Clarks do a proper 8, and now have the glorious system of ordering them online to appear in the shop so I don't have any more wasted journeys. Dr Martens are a proper 8 too.

I'm 5ft 10. So although my feet are big, I feel they are in proportion.

TracyK · 20/02/2012 19:04

I'm an 8 and don't usually have an probes. Except Mint Velvet bastards only do up to a 7. Ds is 8 and is a size 4, I he he stops soon. His big cousin is a size 15!
