Tankini advice

Bloody hell, I've just realised that I'm going to have to go swimming with DH's entire family soon, and that I don't have anything suitable to wear.

I'd like to wear a tankini with little shorts, has anyone seen a nice one? Oh yes, and it has to hold my post-baby tummy in too Grin.

Maybe I should just wear a wetsuit...

Why a tankini? What about a sports bikini? My mum gave me a tankini which was no good for her, it was awful for me too.

RecursiveMoon · 18/02/2012 21:44

Oh, I just thought a tankini based on maximum coverage. What's a sports bikini?

It's like a sports bra top with biggish pants. In my experience, with my body, it's better than a long vesty bit with shorts and also more comfortable to swim in.

RecursiveMoon · 18/02/2012 21:55

I'm pretty rubbish at swimming TBH. I plan to faff about in the shallow end with DS.

Okay, where should I look for such things?

See, I think tankinis only look good on those who don't need to wear one - on all but the slim, they highlight exactly what you're trying to hide.

I would either wear a bikini (& some of the most attractive women I've seen in bikinis have been size 18 plus. Their confidence has made them uber sexy) or a one piece that gives a great sillouette (sp?)

ifancyashandy · 18/02/2012 22:00

Ps. The bigger the bikini bottom, the bigger your arse looks!! Grin. And tie bottoms are your friend - you can move the waist band to where it looks best on you and can tie them so they don't cut in.

RecursiveMoon · 18/02/2012 22:02

Hmm, I'm not slim! I'm either a size 12 or a 14. I like the idea of a tankini because of the little shorts I think (easier Blush), I think they look nice too.

It's that 'togs or undies' thing - when you're next to the pool in your swimming costume, it's fine because you're in your togs, but when you walk too far away from the pool, you might as well be in your undies.

I don't want FIL to see me in my undies Grin.

I'm going abroad next week and am I bit chubbier than I used to be. I found the perfect tankini!! In peacocks. Seriously try it. It hold everything in and gives a great shape with no bulges. I'm so impressed!

floweryblue · 18/02/2012 22:12

12 or 14 is nothing like fat, it's just normal.

floweryblue · 18/02/2012 22:14

The trouble with shorts is that they can ride up, better off with big pants, but that's only my view.

RecursiveMoon · 18/02/2012 22:14

No, I know, I just said that I wasn't slim Smile.

Really, tankinis are not flattering. They always show off that bit of your stomach that wobbles. Either go for a one piece or a bikini, they look so much better.

Pharoahnuff · 19/02/2012 07:21

FFs. Suit (for pools in uk) or bikini for beaches.
You can get shorts. Try fig leaves lands end marks bhs ( oddly) etc.

MrsCampbellBlack · 19/02/2012 08:38

Avoid tankinis unless you have washboard stomach - bikinis much more flattering or as Pharoah says - a swimsuit for UK pool stuff.

I wore a tankini when ds2 was 6 months old and I hadn't lost all the weight - lordy - I looked a fright as the top rolled up and I had this shelf of tummy on display - a bikini would have looked better.

springaroundthecorner · 19/02/2012 11:18

I am a bit fan of Tankinis with shorts - dont shoot me! I do a lot of active stuff when at the seaside (sailing) and they are so much better than swimsuits as if you do get a lie down you can always fold them up. Shorts preserve your modesty when clambering about and save the need for having to put a pair of proper shorts on over the top all the time.
I have expensive and cheap ones over the years (Fanstasie/Freya good but my very favourite was one I bought last year from M&S and they have them again! They hold your tummy in, are extremely comfy - no wire but great for my 34DD's and very flattering. Have a look on their website.

Cherrypie32 · 19/02/2012 12:33

I just bought a great tankini from Bravissimo. Don't understand the fuss, it covers my entire (not unsubstantial) tummy just like a swimsuit and best of all top is sized like a bra. It has shorts and there is no way I would put my size 14 arse in anything with less coverage Smile

RecursiveMoon · 19/02/2012 12:52

Thanks for all of the advice, I will mull it over and have a look around online Smile.

I like tankinis as long as the tops are long enough to meet and overlap the bottoms.
