Knee length day dresses and leggings - but what shoes?

big boots (ugg style) make my legs look short and fat, ballet shoes are too cold, what do you wear? Am considering flat biker style boots but legs are a bit chunky and I don't know if I'd have the same problem as with the uggs.

I wear flat ankle boots with quite loose tops, from a few seasons ago, but tend to keep the dresses above the knee to prevent clumpyness. If they're on the knee, it's tights not leggings. Not sure why, but it's my rule!
