Bad post partum hair

What should I do with my bad 6 months post partum hair? Would love some recommendations for hair cuts or just products.

Normally I have a lot of hair (number of strands) but it's fine (the individual strands). It's very dark brown, almost black, often get asked if its dyed -its not. It is long, down to my shoulder blades and a bit layered although mostly grown out. It's a bit annoying in texture -can be curly toward the bottom but because its fine and I'm oily skinned, the top gets really flat, so to avoid that unattractive flat top, curly ended look when au naturale, I usually straighten it, or put in rollers/curl with GHDs. Always needed a bit of looking after -conditioning, heat protection spray given that its fine and can get a bit split endy. But I think it looked reasonably good most of the time...

Now, its a total nightmare...

  1. I have lost loads post partum, can see more scalp than I'd like...
  2. it feels very dry and brittle, particularly at the ends
  3. I'm just not getting the time to care for it
  4. overall there's just not much of it, I can't believe how small and thin it feels bundled together in a pony

Need some ideas for products that will get both moisture and volume back into it, suggestions for styling, maybe even a new haircut -I have a long oval face, you know the kind thats supposed to suit any hairstyle/ any glasses; biggish forehead!

Thank you for any suggestions...

Oh and my hair is still falling out in handfulls, when will this stop? I definitely have much less than prepreg.

Bumping for you. I had similar - just got it cut as short as I could bear and sat it out until it grew back. Interested to see what others advise and what I could have done differently/better.

Thanks, i'll bump it again but perhaps there's just no solution!

Sit it out.

Keep an eye though. I had 'postnatal hair' for four years. Turned out to be pernicious anemia and a thyroid issue.

I had similar, though not as long. It's a real comedown when all the lovely hair you had while pg falls out. I stuck with it for 18 months. Have just cut it all off into a jaw length graduated bob. So much easier and in much better condition.

Whitsunday, funny you should mention that...there is autoimmune hypothyroidism and pernicious anaemia in my family and I understand it can start post natally...had been thinking about having my levels checked.

I don't think sitting it out is an option, but will maybe check its not a thyroid issue before taking drastic measures.

I had massive hair loss after all three pregnancies, then again after stopping BF when DS2 was 2. I've cut it very short - it's about an inch long now - because the regrowth was so annoying. For a long time it was literally handfuls coming out, and I had small bald patches.

i am using this lush shampoo which is fantastic.
