I have really skinny calves, can I do the ankle boot and skinnies look?

Title says it all really! My calves are skinny, think straight, think Duo boots in a really really narrow width Blush. Anyway, through winter I'm quite happy in knee length boots with skinnies or with tunic/above knee dress, wool tights or leggings.

Then spring comes, eventually I can put it off no longer and I have to pack my boots away for another six months .... my heart breaks in two!!! Grin. What can I wear? I don't do ballet flats with skinnies as I think, for me anyway, it's too young a look - aside from the fact that they cut the feet off me!!! So, the question is, are ankle boots wearable with skinnies when one has legs like mine? Someone linked to these on another thread - they're quite nice, would they suit? Once summer (what summer?) comes, I wear straight legged jeans with flats, chino/combat skinnies, nothing terribly nice or trendy as I just can't find anything I like and would rather save my pennies for autumn Grin.

Opinions and suggestions much appreciated.

we could do a calf transplant if you like - I have enough to spare :)

DuchessEm · 06/02/2012 13:23

I also have skinny legs - duo calf of 32" - and I look like I have golf clubs for legs if I try the skinnies and ankle boots combo! Grin You would have to try it and see. May try those nice boot socks like this (third pic down!) that I keep seeing people wear with them just to 'thicken' your lower leg up a little? I have have a uniform of knee boots in the winter and ballet flats in the summer, so I know what you mean about what else to wear!

Lovely boots, BTW!!

I have slim legs and live in skinnies and ankle boots. I think they balance out bulkier tops / jumpers in winter and the silk shirts I tend to wear in spring.

nearlytherenow · 06/02/2012 14:41

I have very skinny legs too, and I think skinnies and clunky-ish ankle boots is the best look for me - fools people into thinking I'm thin when I actually have a very flabby tummy indeed!

Millie1 · 06/02/2012 20:36

Thanks all! Might have to try them and see what they look like on my sticks - not too far off yours, Duchess at 34/35cm. Calf transplant - yes please!! Grin

yy to rumpled leg warmer things or boot socks

startail · 06/02/2012 20:42

Any one seen any nice lace up ankle boots for the same sort of reason.
Clarks and M&S mum boots seem to get looser each year, no use with tights and a skirt. Blooming draughty too!

startail · 06/02/2012 20:45

Can't do thick socks, I had an XBF who wore tight jeans tucked into wooly socks and the baseball type trainersBlush

Haberdashery · 06/02/2012 21:04

I also have v v skinny calves. I haven't dared ankle boots yet but I find really chunky legwarmers/boot socks with mid-calf boots fine (nobody has yet laughed at me in the street which I was a bit worried about. So you would probably be OK with the ankle boots and chunky legwarmers. You should definitely take a pair of legwarmers to a shop to try with them. I have only tried on ankle boots a couple of times but I felt like they made me look like Minnie Mouse. I haven't tried them with ruffled fat socks, though.

I tend to revert to narrow straight-legged jeans when it gets too warm for knee boots but not warm enough for 'pretty' shoes and wear them with trainers (Puma are brilliant for the narrow ankled) or Converse or similar.

Millie1 · 06/02/2012 21:43

Sorry, don't think I can do leg warmers, it reminds me of my schooldays! I did try Uggs on with skinnies once and they looked awful, really terrible so I am hoping that ankle boots with a low heel, being finer, will look better.

Haberdashery updating my very old Converse for summer is a great idea but I hope I wouldn't be mutton dressed as lamb at the grand old age of 44!!

I am 43 so also fervently hoping that I am not mutton dressed as lamb!

Have you tried converse slim at all? I think they are called that. The very narrow and thin-soled ones. I got some last summer and they are great - really excellent in terms of not making me look like I am wearing my mother's shoes. I can even wear them with trainer socks and a skirt and not look insane.

verylittlecarrot · 06/02/2012 22:29

I have big fat calves. Envy

Bite me.

LaCerbiatta · 07/02/2012 10:05

I also have ridiculous skinny calves. I have loads of lovely dresses and skirts that I wear in winter but can't wear anything other than trousers in the summer... :(

Any ideas for spring and summer? What do you all wear?

startail · 07/02/2012 10:34

Sandals!
Don't do court shoes of any kind. Absolutely can't do trainers with out socks.

Boots in winter, trainers, socks and cotton trousers Spring and Autumn. Skirts, dresses or cropped trousers and sandals in summer.
I scour the shops for comfy, faintly pretty, flat, LEATHER lined sandals. It is a never ending frustrating searchSad

Millie1 · 07/02/2012 13:34

I used to think I was alone in having skinny calves!
