Cool glasses? Geek chic still ok?

Hiya,

I normally wear contact lenses as my glasses make me feel a bit tired and unglamourous. I also find it really annoying when you look down and it's all blurry. So I was considering Alexa Chung style geek chic specs but:-

A. Not sure if I've got the balls for it as 35 year old professional mum of two
B. Not sure if the look is going to last - it's been around for nearly a couple of years now

Welcome to other thoughts- currently have simple burgundy Karen Millen frames.

I didn't get on with contacts so I wear my old glasses at work and tend to whip them off as soon as I hear someone opening my door Hmm

I had a look - they are quite big aren't they, a bit too big for my taste. Depends on your face and also prescription. DH has similar pair which IMO are quite nice on him but he's an older male with very square jaw. I think heavier frames are definitely still "in" but I have smaller, tilted/cats eye type frames which are good for my small square-ish but round face (if you know what I mean).

I just got these and love them! They're still on the geek chic side but smaller and more feminine, and a little bit cat eye without being over the top. V flattering and good if you're worried about going off the full on geek look in a few months.

salamanda · 02/02/2012 12:32

Or how about these? They are definitely cool and might be more what you're after. I'm glasses-obsessed at the moment... Another pic here

CointreauVersial · 02/02/2012 17:34

Salamanda - That second pair might look good on Zooey Deschannel but I'd look like a moose in them. I do like the ones you have bought, though.

I have to wear glasses more and more, but still loathe what I look like in them, whatever the style.

salamanda · 02/02/2012 20:03

I know what you mean cointreau. I can't work out what kind of facial attributes are required for the Zooey/Alexa glasses to suit people, but I definitely don't have them.

ShineYourButtonsWithBrasso · 02/02/2012 20:40

Salamanda I really like the look of your new glasses!

Pelvicflooragogo · 03/02/2012 07:48

Well I went for www.oaeyewear.com/product/427/ these in purple from Boots- softer colour so I felt the bigger frame was less of a statement. Excited!

If you have a round face, square glasses will suit you. I look better in geeky styles, though I really want to be able to suit the cateye style because I love them on other people - alas, the roundness of the frame makes me look like a blind onion.

DukesOfTripHazard · 03/02/2012 09:49

This is what I'm planning.

I think this style will be around a long time yet. Anyway, shape suits me and hate current wide armed ones. Love those cat's eye ones but look rubbish in them.

like the black but think dark avana might be better. Am pale blonde. Any thoughts?

Laughing at idea of blind onion.

polyhymnia · 03/02/2012 10:22

I have an oval face which, like the rest of me, is quite large and my Chanel glasses, which really suit me, are very like those in Salamanda's second two links. Think it really does sepend on face shape and size.

Annoyingly, my PC won't let me into the Rayban link in Dukes post, but I do agree that black could be a bit harsh if you're pale blonde - particularly in winter. My glasses are very dark tortoiseshell and, though I have brown eyes and honey blonde hair, I feel they look slightly better in summer, when I have a slight tan, and a little stark now I'm winter-pale. So I wouldn't go for black.

polyhymnia · 03/02/2012 10:22

'depend'!

dottyaboutstripes · 03/02/2012 10:40

I have these Ray Bans and love them - and have had many compliments. I'm also blonde and agree black not so good

Pelvicflooragogo · 07/02/2012 21:11

ooh love both raybans although think they're the both the same. sorry my link didn't work - how about these Nicole Farhi purple frames? Again not too dark for paler hair/ skin and flattering shape for oval face as slightly rounded at the edges.

well I am 37 and have two pairs of "geek" glasses, courtesy of specsavers! They are both Karen Millen but importantly for me do not have massive branding on the side (why do people want to advertise of their face???). Two pairs for £129 so even if by the end of the year they are naff, it won't have been a problem. I hate spending hundreds on glasses because you get so sick of them after a year anyway....
