Why is MAC make up SO mega popular?

MordechaiVanunu · 29/01/2012 12:24

MAC seems to be taking over the makeup world.

I was in Selfridges this week and noticed the MAC counter has doubled in size since Christmas, and you could not get near it. Women were mobbing it like bees around a honey pot. They must have had about 7 assistants all run off their feet doing make overs, answering questions and serving the very long line to pay.

All the other make counters had one or two bored looking assistants with nothing to do except watch the mob at MAC.

I was there to buy some MAC myself, lipstick and fluid line eyeliner, but I was also getting some clinique too.

I just wondered why/how MAC has become such a phenomenon?

Also, they have male make up assistants! Fancy.

I have only ever used their eyeshadows which are good cos the pigment is strong .
The assistants are all meant to be properly trained makeup artists but loads of them look ridiculously made up to me , way too much on.
Don't know why the crowds haven't noticed that .

floralsanddresses · 29/01/2012 12:37

The artists go through a lot of interviews and practical tests before they get in. Most then have to only do as and when work before they get to the counter. Some aren't formally trained but they're all very good at what they do.

MAC products are high quality, highly pigmented, their brushes last for years and years and the Viva Glam range gives every penny to charity. I don't know of any other brand who gives all proceeds from a range of products to charity. They give a 40% discount to make up artists registered with them and they embody the 'all ages, all styles and all races' policy.

I have quite a lot of their make-up. Some of it is amazing, others i find are just expensive rubbish.
I stay well away from their foundation and concealer, because i can't trust the sales assistants to match me up properly, they've done it a million times and I've always come out looking orange!

And for the sales assistants, i have been to MAC, the manchester centre one in selfridges a million times, and i've only been treated nicely by a sales assistant twice. Their horribly rude. It really puts me off going their.

floralsanddresses · 29/01/2012 12:49

I've had a similar experience. I've met one nice sales assistant who really helped me. I put in a good word to her manager as it was such a rarity.

BornToShopForcedToWork · 29/01/2012 12:54

Because their products are amazing.

I am not surprised they counter has doubled in size while others don't have much customers. I was a big Chanel Fan until I started watching online tutorials and most of them use MAC products. So I started buying them, it's cheaper than Chanel and 10 x better. The only thing I still use from Chanel is their foundation. Everything else apart from a few exceptions comes from MAC. Of course it is pricey but it's worth every penny. (And no, I don't work for MAC Smile)

southeastastra · 29/01/2012 13:14

i have some eyeliners and eyeshadows, it just stays on and you notice it straight away! i think they're so busy as there aren't that many counters that sell it apart from major dept stores in big cities.

i am lusting NARS stuff at the moment!

MrsBovary · 29/01/2012 13:34

I tried their foundation and highlighter/moisturiser and found it so highly perfumed it irritated my eyes. But I like their concealer (pencil), some perfume and their nail polishes are fine too.

grumpypants · 29/01/2012 13:40

Oooh weirdly topical for me. Needed mascara so stopped at the airport duty free and bought one plus a lipstick. Not impressed. Hardly any product on the mascara - even went back to check it wasn't empty! Lipstick really bitty and looks like my lips are flaky. Never again!

cyb · 29/01/2012 13:41

I've obviously missed the MAC buzz

never bought anything from there in my life

Fregley · 29/01/2012 13:41

Agree re pigment. Still prefer Chanel foundation.

Staff would be helpful if not so bloody busy imo

cyb · 29/01/2012 13:46

The counter seems to be the de rigeur hang out of all the teenagers in my town

pluckingupcourage · 29/01/2012 13:54

I have lip pencils, lipsticks, eye shadows, brow shadows from mac - really amazing choice of colours and strong pigments. I get on better with ysl foundations.

MordechaiVanunu · 29/01/2012 13:55

I haven't tried their foundation, I'm wedded to estee lauder double wear light for that.

I do love their eyeliner with thier brush to apply though, it just stays put like no other eyeliner.

NARS was the counter which seemed to be suffering most from MAC success, their counter had been halved and no one shopping there. (love their blushes though, have Deep Throat wanting Orgasm and to try their luguna bronzer).

MAC is cheaper than many of the high end brands, but it just seems phenomenally successful.

Haven't found the assistants particularly helpful, partly because they're SO busy.

If you find out what MAC products are the best ones you won't be disappointed. I use makeupalley.com to check items out. I have about 20 of their eyeshadows, they do colours and shades that you won't find anywhere else. Their blushes are great. Their collaborations with celebs and designers for limited editions are always very cool. I don't rate their mascaras or lipsticks, but their lip glosses are another brilliant thing they do. So many shades, you are spoilt for choice. Oh and their brushes are amazing. I have several and they have lasted years. Worth every penny.

Goandplay · 29/01/2012 14:11

I love MAC - reminds me of a sweet shop for grown ups. There was a really nice girl and boy on the counter at House of Fraser Bluewater. The girl recommended a blusher and i've had a few comments.
I have some Christmas money I might spend on some brushes from there (I have a great foundation brush which is really standing the test of time).

MordechaiVanunu · 29/01/2012 14:17

I don't do eyeshadow, just EVERYTHING else.

I've always been distinctly underwhelmed by Mac Confused

PippiLongBottom · 29/01/2012 14:22

I find MAC foundation and cream blusher knocks years off me. I use pro-long wear and wouldn't be without it. Does anyone know if it's true that you get a discount or free product if you take empty ones back?

My saying is: once you've had MAC, you'll never go back Wink

KateSpade · 29/01/2012 14:32

Yeah, you've got to take 6 empty bottles/containers back you get a free lipstick. it's called 'Back to mac'

& also if you love cream blusher try Jemma Kidd's creme blush, it is amazing! It's the best blusher i have ever used!

Mac brushes are amazing, they are quite pricey, so I've been going with Sigma recently, which are just as good!

pluckingupcourage · 29/01/2012 14:34

ooh KateSpade, which creme blush do you use from Jemma Kidd (and how easy is it to get hold of?). I'm going to move away from powder blush as I think it just sits on top of my skin.

PippiLongBottom · 29/01/2012 14:44

Oh does it have to be a lipstick? Balls. I don't wear lipstick.

KateSpade · 29/01/2012 15:57

Its the Jemma Kidd Creme cheek colour

I bought mine from Space NK, but you can get it from feel unique who do free delivery. It's creme when you apply it, you blend it onto your skin and after a couple of minutes it sets, not like a powder, but so its un-smudgeable. I find the mac creme blushers still have the sticky creme thing going on all day long which is irritating.
Its worth a try, i don't think i'll ever go back to a mac creme blush now

Why don't you get one and sell it on ebay, as long as its not used, in box it'll be fine. You might swell have it if its free! Or.. get into lipstick Grin

pluckingupcourage · 29/01/2012 17:04

ooh nice brightening colours KateSpade - did you get guava?

QuinnFabray · 29/01/2012 17:54

I like their eyeshadows. The foundations that I've tried ( about three ) have all broken me out. I can't stand the sickly sweet vanilla smell of the lipsticks. Everything else I've tried has been okay, but nothing that I can't find elsewhere. I prefer Bourjois to be honest. However, the MAC spf 50 primer is a godsend to me and I keep stocked up in case they discontinue it. It's amazing. Prefer Sigma HD brushes.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 29/01/2012 17:56

I have used it since it first hit the UK and I was in my first job. It's the only place that has lipsticks etc that suit my skintone. I don't really suit the foundations though and stick to double wear. Have recently branched out into Ilamasqua and Bobbi Brown though.
