Need help with hair dye

I have now found that I need to go to the hairdressers every 3 weeks to cover up the grey that is now growing through. I really cannot afford the money or the time. Problem is I have very light brown hair with subtle highlights.

At the hairdressers they put in a few highlights and dye the new growth light brown. Is it possible to do this at home? I could get a friend to help me do the areas that I cannot get to....

Alternatively can I just put a dye to cover all my hair including the new growth and stay the same colour?

Anyone do this? Any advice?

i've just gone in the other direction - having always dyed my own hair one colour, i got sick of having a really obvious regrowth, plus dreadful condition hair, so i've started going to the hairdresser evey 7 weeks for regrowth/highlights. it hides the regrowth much more convincingly than the diy job did.
