Need a showgirl outfit for next to no money

I need to dress up for a work thing (don't ask) and I need a spangly showgirl outfit.
I don't suppose any of you have one lying around which I could borrow, do you? I'm looking for full swimsuit effect with feathers on head etc.

I would hire one but I have no money to spare at all. I'm a size 8 -10. I have seen a few on ebay but they are too cheap looking - it's quite a glitzy gig and i need quality support!

[hopeful face] [bit embarrassed too face]

Cheap bright swimming costume, black fishnets (with plain bright tights under for modesty), and raid your local fabric shop for feathers. Attach to a Claires cheapie headband

You can make a cheapie tutu by tying lengths of net to a piece of elastic. Loads of tutorials, just google "easy tutu"

SwedishEdith · 23/01/2012 19:40

We can't not ask

cutteduppear · 23/01/2012 19:46

Thanks Purple, but I already have something a bit like that - unfortunately the gig is not fancy dress, more like the real thing and I need something that will stand up to scrutiny and spotlights.
I just hoped someone might have their auntie's original showgirl costume from Vegas under the bed...oh well...

I have ^^this but it's a 12 so too probably too big

www.corsets-uk.com/fashion/black-basque-and-tutu-a3030-s013.html would work well, or

www.corsets-uk.com/sale/sj-048-red-lace-overlay-corset.html with homemade tutu to match

www.corsets-uk.com/sale/sj-122-pirate-costume-and-hat.html or Pirate theme...

(thank you for an excuse to browse one of my favourite sites Grin)

PurplePidjin · 23/01/2012 20:07

Also, if you're crafty, it's not too hard to make your own corset. Lots of tutorials around and you can use cut up plastic bottles for boning if it's a fashion thing rather than actual waist training

cutteduppear · 24/01/2012 00:02

Mmm top hat, good idea. I have a good black corset (by Vollers) and fishnets already. I have a tutu too, a black one.

TBH I wanted lots of sparkles and big feathers on my head but it looks like I won't get them this time!

Why I need this is a bit hard to explain. I'm a freelance self employed worker; among other (more sensible) things I do hosting/theming for private parties. The party organiser decides on a theme, I book some other performers and we dress up accordingly and either engage with the customers or act out scenarios (usually things we find hilarious). Not sex btw, in case it looks that way.

This gig is quite glitzy and we have to really look the part. Often we hire bits of costume, and I've got quite a few things at home, but this time I wanted to get an extra girl in on the gig as she needs the work (as do I, this time of year is quiet). So that's why, I am trying to find the costume for nowt as I want to spend the costume budget on paying her wages instead.

The other girl already has a costume, the thing is she's twenty years younger than me, and I'll feel it stood next to her. I know my booker doesn't know my real age but I'm trying to look even younger this time!

We are having this guy to sing for us, he's lovely....

The big feathers are about a quid each in a fabric shop or haberdashery. Claire's Accessories for a tiara, glue on feathers, one sparkly head piece for a fiver...

PurplePidjin · 24/01/2012 08:36

www.fabricland.co.uk/

Worst website everbut very sound shops! Ostrich feathers £1.20 each.

cutteduppear · 24/01/2012 09:36

Yes, I agree about Fabric Land's website, it would put anyone off who didn't already know how good they were! It's actually quite hilarious when you look at the website.
I'm driving near there today, might pop in and get some feathers.

I 2nd Fabric Land. I used them to but 30 metres of gold voile to make drapes for my sun room at Christmas. Weird site but lovely people.

trixymalixy · 24/01/2012 22:35

Primark had load of feather stuff in when I was dressing up for a party, it's worth a look in there.

Msarsebiscuit · 24/01/2012 22:50

As a tragic dressing up addict, may I recommend this website - Showgirlorama www.crystal-clover.com/products/Fringes%20and%20Feathers

cutteduppear · 25/01/2012 08:42

Thanks, will check out crystal clover...and Primark [shame]

black bustier. you've got, i think?

black sequin hotpants/granny knickers (top shop had a bunch of these recently - I blame lady gaga) these

fishnets as mentioned.

black mini top hat here

huge heels!

If you want yards of net behind you to create a kind of half skirt, I reccomend a net petticoat, folded in half and tacked to the back waistband of the granny pants. sew some claires accesories hair flowers to the waistband to cover the stitching...

:)

PurplePidjin · 25/01/2012 18:43

Ooh I just thought, I have the perfect shoes! Purple patent 4" heels with 1" platforms. Are you near enough to the New Forest to collect if you borrowed them? Size 5.5...

cutteduppear · 26/01/2012 22:58

Sadly I am a size 7 foot.
I will wear black Mary Janes (2" heel)with big red ribbon bows on. Hey, this is a classy gig not a porn shoot! Grin But thanks very much for the kind thought, tis a kindness indeed to lend one's shoes...

I am bidding on cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&&item=220938426162#ht_500wt_1287 so fingers crossed!

-I have black fishnets and glossy nude tights for underneath
-V good black corset which was made for me (Jessica Wabbit style with boob coverage)
-A pillbox hat with tall feathers on it
-Underneath it all there will be a swimsuity type showgirl thing with netting flouncing from the hips. I'm wearing all the other stuff over the top cos it won't be enough to give good body shape on its own.

I am thinking about wearing a tight black ruffled bolero shrug, to cover upper arms and tattoo Blush. I wonder if this is covering up too much. What do you think?

The 2 girls working with me are 20 yrs and 15 yrs younger than me...I'm just a bit Hmm that I will cut the mustard!
