In a fit of wanting to actually look nice, just for one night, I have bought some high waist skinny jeans from next, navy blue and some nude patent shoes.

can't find the shoes, but they're covered toe with kind of a chunky 3/4" heel.

I'm a size 14, short, generously curvy and am planning to wear the jeans with my riding boots after my night out.

If I wear the jeans with the shoes, what can I wear on top?

Ooooor, have I made a huuuuuge mistake and should I take them all back and wear a binbag?

I would return them because you will find they go baggy rather quickly. The initial effect doesn't last. You'd be better off getting these which retain their shape.

Then wear a longish floaty blouse from Zara on top.

I think they look lovely-in fact I might get them too! I bought Next skinny jeans last year and they kept their shape. They have been great.

I don't know what you should wear on the top but I like the jeans.

My 2 pairs of high-waisters went binwards after a couple of months.

I have those jeans in the dark green colour and they are great. Very flattering and have retained their shape even after washing. I am planning to wear mine on a night out with a cream lace top - round neck, 3/4 sleeves and a loose - ish fit. And gold platform heels.

During the day I wear them tucked into my dark brown cowboy boots with a beige cashmere sweater.

I'm so not brave enought for green, but I love the cashmere combo!
