I spend about £80 a year on myself and about £90 each on the DCs, that includes their shoes from Clarks.

OP posts:
MABS · 20/01/2012 17:59

more than fifty here if i add in nails and waxing too

Craparinha · 20/01/2012 18:04

God. Had no idea until this thread made me tot it all up. Probably spend about £1500-2000 a year on myself, 500-600 on kids. that includes shoes.

I spend £100 a month on beauty, nails etc, so add that on top

I buy some nice things - posh beauty products, nice shoes etc, but most of my stuff is high street. Apart frm Clarks shoes and Boden winter coats, my kids live n Tesco, Asda and Ebay stuff.

Craparinha · 20/01/2012 18:05

I have mani nce a fortnight, eyebrow thread and pedi once a month and hair cut every 6-8 wks. It all adds up doenst t?!

MABS · 20/01/2012 18:17

similar for me Craparinha :(

aJumpedUpPantryBoy · 20/01/2012 18:31

Maximum of £100 per month. This includes haircuts and make up.
If I spend more I deduct it from the next month's budget.

However, last month I spent £150 on new bras so I have decided that underwear doesn't have to come from my budget

QED · 20/01/2012 18:48

Hair cuts £15 which are every 6 weeks but hoping to cut down to every 8 now hair has grown a bit. Plus colour every 6 weeks at about £4 a go.

ragged · 20/01/2012 20:28

On DC at least twice as much as OP (their shoes add up, especially); maybe £15/month on me, including footwear. I don't have maintenance costs otherwise. Wink Even when I worked it was in a scruffy profession, so little cost there.

& I don't spin my own fabric or have relatives that buy us anything (okay, okay, I admit Granny bought DC4 some shoes 2 months ago, first time any of DC ever bought shoes by a relative). I never say no to 2nd hand clothes for kids, though, & I am ace at finding cheap clothes for other DC (jumble sales; car boot; 2 huge bin bags-full for £10 in the FreeAds that turn out to include 2 outfits DC didn't even like that can flog for £15 each, charity shop sales, etc.)

I don't care what others spend on clothes, just don't come bleating on here later about having "too many" clothes or being skint.

Notcontent · 20/01/2012 22:26

In 2011 I spent quite a lot, probably on average 500 or so a month...

BUT like others I am going to spend a lot less this year. Prices are going up, my salary is not... I did consider doing the whole "no spending for a whole year" thing... But I m going to be more realistic and allow myself 50 a month.

WinterGoddess · 20/01/2012 22:38

I budget for £200 per month on myself, which I stick to regardless, it doesn't cover hairdressors but does include makeup. I only shop 3 or 4 times a year.
And £50/month for each of the dcs which is often a more elastic budget.

ameliagrey · 20/01/2012 22:39

Just out of interest- the high spenders..

if you spend £500 a month are you a) working f/t
b) if not, have a rich partner and
c) manage to wear all your clothes!

I tend to buy middle to top ( but not designer) high street ranges- eg Jigsaw,
but find it hard to wear even the small number of clothes I own as i work from home .

I boggle at what I'd buy with £500 a month- and actually have the lifestyle to wear those clothes.

Notcontent · 20/01/2012 22:53

Ameliagrey - I work nearly full time, and I don't have a partner. Things have been a bit tough for me so I haven't felt too guilty...
I don't buy lots of things - but when I do they tend to be expensive!

Mominatrix · 21/01/2012 06:48

I've never before figured out what my budget for clothes and shoes are, and have done a rough tally in my head. What a shock!

DS1: Conservatively, £1000 a year (needs 2 different kinds of boots for sports, then trainers for school and home, 3 pairs of school shoes a year, THEN clothes!)

DS2:

MABS · 21/01/2012 10:02

Amelia - I have my own busines which is doing pretty well, dh has a good job, but do i wear all my clothes?! sadly not.

MrsSeanBean · 21/01/2012 10:50

I have never worked out a monthly amount, but I suppose this year, so far, have spent about £400 on clothes, haven't yet bought any shoes this year. That doesn't include hair etc. However, this figure is maybe 'skewed' as most of the clothes expenditure was from sales / outlets. However, I live near a good Toast outlet shop so rarely but anything at 'full price'.

PavlovtheCat · 21/01/2012 10:52

Not enough. In fact, I am trying to spend £50 right now on a couple of tops or something. And I can't find anything I like.

So in the last 12 months I have spent, probably like £70 on clothes and shoes! but, around £50 on make-up.

higgle · 21/01/2012 11:29

I'm surprised how much some of you spend on childrens clothes - I used to spend about a hundred pounds maybe twice a year on my two. I made sure DS2 had a fully stocked wardrobe after GCSEs and now he has £30pcm allowance that he manages on quite well.

Heswall · 21/01/2012 11:35

I convinced myself that i would buy better quality and sell it on or hand it down but actually % wise you get moreback from sainsburys clothes if they are stain free than catimini.
We do like catimini though and i'd rather they looked nice than me tbh.

Heswall · 21/01/2012 11:36

Children's clothes that is.

GraduallyGoingInsane · 21/01/2012 18:07

Oh I really shouldn't have added this up.

On myself...

Hair is £100 every 2 months, making £600 per year.

Makeup and skincare is when it runs out, but I use about 10 items and they run out say twice a year, so that's £200 a year.

I don't buy clothes/shoes every month. I buy workwear (suit pieces) in the sale, so probably pick up 2 or 3 items a year at about £100 each. Tops and casual wear, I'd say I buy 2 items a month, so that's say £100 per month. That makes £1500 per year.

Shoes I keep for years (other than summer sandals), so I probably replace 1 pair of shoes and 1 pair of boots a year, plus sandals. Say £200 in total.

Making my total spends per year on myself £2,500. Ouch. Shock

On the DDs...

School uniform - probably £150 a year, with one new skirt, a couple of packs of blouses, and a new jumper. The blazer lasts a few years. Plus tights. Oh and then PE kit probably adds another £50 with trainers and tracksuits and things.

School shoes - generally they grow slowly (thank the Lord!) so one pair lasts a year. I do buy more expensive shoes to try to make them last, so that'd be £50.

Dance/gymnastics/cheerleading clothes and shoes - they go through one pair of flat ballet shoes and at least 2 or 3 pairs of pointe shoes, so that's £100 a year. Then a couple of leotards/tights makes another £50. Cheer trainers are £70 a pop, and they usually get a couple of sports bras and shorts each, so thats another £50 or so. Uniform is eye watering but lasts years, thank goodness. I'd say total outlay on hobbies is £300ish each.

Casual clothes and shoes - extras tend to come out of their pocket money/birthday and christmas presents. Grandma is also a big spoiler! They each get a few new things for winter and a few new things for summer, probably adding up to £300 each time, making £600 a year. Then they get a pair of casual shoes/converse/pumps, plus a pair of sandals, plus a pair of boots. That probably totals £200 a year.

That makes a whopping £750 per year on each DD. And I have 4. And I think that was probably conservative, as I'm a bit of a soft touch if they see something they like AND I approve of. Confused

I just realised that my total clothing budget for me and the kids is £5,500 per year. No wonder DH is working overtime this weekend...

vitaminC · 22/01/2012 08:14

I spent a lot more when I was working, as I needed a smart corporate wardrobe (and had more money coming in)!

Now I'm a full-time student again, I spend a lot less. I tend to buy stuff twice a year, during the sales. I reckon I've spent around ?500 in the past year - ?100 on winter boots, ?100 on some decent bras and around ?300 on clothes and accessories (including a warm winter coat as I now travel on public transport every day).

I don't spend much on my kids, as my ex and his parents buy most of their clothes and my mum buys them each a pair of school shoes and a pair of boots every year. I tend to buy the "extras" - party dresses, sandals, hair accessories, hats, gloves, scarves etc. Probably comes to around ?300/year for all 3 kids.

JustAnother · 22/01/2012 10:02

my budget is £300 pcm, but sometimes I got a bit over and bite into the household budget. Blush This includes clothes, make up and perfumes, but not hair appointments or anything like that.

JustAnother · 22/01/2012 10:06

@amelia, yes I work f/t and I wear all my clothes. I never wear the same clothes or shoes within the same week at work. Weekend clothes are different, so I only have 2 pairs of jeans, for example, and sometimes they don't come out of the wardrobe for weeks.

trice · 22/01/2012 10:18

I wondered why I always look like a bag lady in my charity shop jeans and home knits. I spend less than £50 per month on me inc hair and make up. And about the same on the two dcs combined.
I spend about £70 per month on yarn and fabric though. That is where my passions lie.

scarlet76 · 22/01/2012 10:49

I posted early on in this thread but it has really had me thinking as H and I are determined to rein in the spending this year.

The £250 I said I spend on myself did not include a trip to the hairdresser every other month which is £100 and my trips to the Clinique counter every 3 months - £75.

I have realised that I was also far too conservative thinking I only spend £40 per month combined on DC. When I stopped to think about it, it is probably nearer £80 but I sell all their old stuff on ebay and get quite a bit back which goes into new stuff. e.g. sold some old Mini Boden this month and made £30.

So, the plan we have now is that we will stick to £80 per calendar month for DC things. That we will have £200 each per month for ourselves BUT this must include hair cuts, beauty products and clothes etc... I have already started to think where I will 'cut corners' I may got to hair dressers every 12 weeks instead of every 8 unless I have a special occasion, saving me £200 per year. I will stop using some clinique products - e.g. their facial wash which must be around £15 - I have used simple age resist in the past for £5 and it is fine for me. Also may go for cheaper mascara and lip glosses. It's a bit of a revelation as to how much I can save if I stop and think about it. Thank you OP!!

AlpinePony · 22/01/2012 10:50

Before I read this thread I'd have said "not a lot", but if I'm brutally honest with myself it's come in at around 2k (who knew?) minimum (excl. beauty/hair) for me and then 4-500 for one child.

I'm going to actually write down what I spend this year - might be an eye opener!
