I spend about £80 a year on myself and about £90 each on the DCs, that includes their shoes from Clarks.

An average of 500£ a month, sometimes more.

ENormasSnob · 16/01/2012 17:52

About 100 to 200 per month.

Roughly 600 between 3 dc.

Mrsrobertduvall · 16/01/2012 17:58

Don't have a budget, I spend as and when I see something.
Probably about £2k a year on me, £700 on dd...no idea on ds, he is quite cheap.

henrythecat · 16/01/2012 18:08

Probably £250ish 2x a year on work clothes and shoes (autumn/winter then spring/summer). I'm very hard on work clothes so no point doing any investment pieces as they'll just get ruined by some chemical or other, tippex, felt pens, whiteboard pens etc etc. I just buy a few oufits from Warehouse, Zara, Great Plains type places, wear to death, ebay what's acceptable and then chuck out what's worn through and start again each season.

For play...probably average £150-£200/month but I work to a capsule wardrobe so I actually have fairly few clothes but they are good quality and all 'work' together. With the exception of primark jersey l/s tops for with PJs and for working out/cycling etc, I don't really buy really cheap/throwaway type fashion. When I've worn stuff to death and it's still in saleable condition, will ebay and usually end up getting a third of what I paid back (sometimes more).

Spend naf all on my hair though and I'm not a bag person (I don't actually have one, just purse for money and Cath Kidston (I know, I know...but I like the prints so there) shoppers for carting stuff around).

Heswall · 16/01/2012 18:12

Quite a lot by the sounds of the it. The DC's will have £250 a month typically spent on them, sports shoes, school uniforms, school shoes, coats and fashion bits and pieces.
I work full time so have to look presentable, so maybe £500 a year on shoes, tights, new tops and a new suit every two years.

Kendodd · 19/01/2012 09:21

As you can see I don't spend a lot on clothes. Even if I did have lots of money to spend I don't know where I would find the time! I guess 2k might only be two-three shopping trips a year though. Shopping just isn't my idea of fun though, apart from the children's shoes I do most of mine on line.

OP posts:
MABS · 19/01/2012 09:28

far too much, and don't start me on hair and nails ...ooouch.

Bloodyhellthathurts · 19/01/2012 12:57

Much more than I used to, my new years resolution was to stop buying cheap 'disposable' clothing and spend the money on more high quality pieces. I'm working on a cost-per-wear principle, and also hoping that dropping more money on better made garments mean they will last longer and hopefully date less quickly.

SimoneD · 19/01/2012 13:07

About £250 per month on myself and about £150 per month on dd.

Kendodd - how can you only spend £90 per child a year including clarks shoes? I cant understand how this could be done! This is only 1 outfit and 1 pair of shoes. Let me into your secret

naturelover · 19/01/2012 13:30

About £400 twice a year for me. Never feels like enough because I'm constantly replacing like for like when things wear out. £400 will get a lot of summer clothes (and they last for longer as get less wear) but come winter, by the time I've bought a pair of boots and a coat, budget gone! Could explain why this year I'm wearing the same 3 jumpers and two pairs of trousers. BORED of them already and it's only January!

VivaLaSativa · 19/01/2012 14:49

I rarely find clothes that I like, for that reason I don't set a budget really. Just bought a coat for £285 in a sale and some boots for about £100. I buy less spend more and for some reason I can't ever seem to like anything from the typical high street shops.
I spend more on hair treatments, nail products and make up than clothing.

Kendodd · 19/01/2012 14:55

Well I have to admit, my mum does buy my children a lot. I may spend a bit more than £90, but not much. About two pairs of shoes each a year, things like wellies and trainers come from the supermarket.

This thread reminds me of the ones where poeple say " oh i feed a family of 5 on £30 a week"

Then they drip feed that the kids get all their meals at school and at grans befroe and after school and both adults get a hot meal at work. Oh and their dad has an allotment. And their mum owns a corner shop and brimgs home all the waste. And that thwir shopping billl only includes food and no cleaning stuff, washing powder etc

redbluered · 19/01/2012 17:01

last year (2011) probably about £130 for the year on me which included a £100 voucher given as a gift by husband for a clothes shop and a few charity shop items (some of which I now regret)
currently have 2 tops sitting in a "basket" on an internet clothes shop sale webpage total £27 for both - trying to resist
My new years resolution is to use all my powers to improve my financial situation and making that purchase will not improve it

sheeplikessleep · 19/01/2012 17:05

OP - bet if you posted this in chat the 'average' would be much lower.

lisaro · 19/01/2012 17:08

Kendodd I'm intrigued - what do you normally wear? You seem to have cut it all down to bare minimum - not having a go btw, just really am interested.

QED · 19/01/2012 17:22

I probably soend about £100 per year on uniform for both DC (ie school and rainbow/cub etc). Then about £150 maybe on shoes.

Then other stuff about £250 altogether for them.

I need a lot less as i have stopped growing :) Havent bought any new shoes or boots this year and my mum got me my winter coat so have spent about maybe £100 in the past year? So about £600 in a year for me and 2 DC. About £50 a month.

Kendodd · 19/01/2012 17:33

Lol.

Heswall · 19/01/2012 17:36

lol @ KristinaM, it's so true. I wouldn't say shopping is a particular hobby of mine and we buy most of our clothes online too, but I genuinely cannot see how anyone with school aged children could get away with less than £100 per child per year and have them in clothes/shoes that fit, are comfortable and not falling apart. Especially boys, mine is only 18 months and there's very little that isn't fit for the bin after 6 months of wear and I try to buy Boden, Mama's and Papa's, Next rather than cheaper stuff as that lasts weeks rather than months in my experience.

alemci · 19/01/2012 17:44

It varies but about £100 a month on myself. I think I will try to keep a tally and it would be interesting to see.

KristinaM · 19/01/2012 18:19

Heswall, my 6yo rips about one pair of school trousres every month. So even if yiu buy cheap ones from the supermarket thats abiut £50 a year on trousers alone. Add 2pairs of school shoes, wellies and 2-3 pairs of plimsoles for school. Then other uniform on top -their school shirts only last abiut half the year. My 7 yo has just had a whole new unform at christmas as he has grown so much since the summer. And i have two boys close in age so in theory i shoudl be able to pass things down. In practice i can only hand down jackets and wellies as everything else is done.

I have no idea how families on benefit manage Sad.

QED · 19/01/2012 19:16

I find supermarket or ebay things seem to last mine for a while. And although they do grow they seem to do it gradually. DS also finds one pair of trousers he likes and will wear so seems pointless to buy him many more pairs really.

ameliagrey · 19/01/2012 22:48

Truth is- no idea!

I tend to buy my clothes as " 2 seasons" and in the winter that can include a winter coat- this year's was £250. I suppose I spend something like £500-£600 winter , then less in summer. Ths season I bought a coat, 3 dresses around £80 each, and a new handbag which was over £100, but no new jumpers or cardis as last year's are fine.

It depends whether I need major items like a handbag, boots or shoes.

ameliagrey · 19/01/2012 22:50

no one is adding in make up and grooming/hair etc here- I think i worked out that i must spend an average of £50 a month if I average out cuts, highlights- once a year- make up and skin care.
