Can we still wear boot cut jeans?

Just wondering really. Cannot wear skinny jeans, my upper thighs won't allow it! Is there a risk of mumsiness with boot cut though, opinions please?

Well I wear them but may be I'm mumsy :) If in doubt, you could wear skinnies and cover your thighs with a longer length tunic top/jumper dress

higgle · 11/01/2012 21:29

No, that is NO!

formerdiva · 11/01/2012 21:31

We're grown ups and we can wear what we bloody well like. If it flatters you, then don't let fashion get in the way of clothes you enjoy : )

suebfg · 11/01/2012 21:31

Is that a no, you shouldn't wear them or a no, there is no risk of mumsiness?

Caz10 · 11/01/2012 21:33

I think footwear makes a difference, I have an old pair of bootcut that I'm having to wear atm due to mat leave fatness. I think they look ok with converse but never with my boots!

partyhats · 11/01/2012 22:25

I have recently gone back to bootcuts after many years. Just got fed up with the skinnies all the time. Also bootcut is flattering for all figure types. Just get a slim style that is not too triangular and flappy from knee. Nothing wrong with wearing them with boots but not a thin heel. I have a low heel chelsea boot I wear them with.

MrsSeanBean · 11/01/2012 22:28

Depends on whether or not they are teamed with 'mum boots'.

scarlet76 · 12/01/2012 06:44

Yes you can. Agree you should wear what you feel comfortable in and not be dictated to by fashion.
But there are a couple of things to avoid... Make sure they are the right length for you. Bootcuts look dreadful if they are too short and flapping round your ankles. They should end just short of the ground with whatever footwear you opt for. Also a darker rinse is less mumsy.
Converse and a skinny sweater is a good casual look for Bootcuts. A fitted white shirt and tan wedge boots is also a good look.
A slim Bootcuts will also give a leaner and more flattering shape.

gregssausageroll · 12/01/2012 08:13

wear whatever you are comfortable in but I do agree that they have to be the right length. That said all trousers should be the right length as I think those that are slightly short don't look great at all.

QueenCadbury · 12/01/2012 09:22

Yes definately. I am a big fan of the 'sexy boot' from gap. As others have said it's way you wear them with that makes them mumsy. I opt for converse and a fitted/skinny top.

Helltotheno · 12/01/2012 09:38

Good advice from scarlet76 there...
I think when it comes to bootcut, we're avoiding the old style black ankle boot with the slightly clumpy heel of about 4 - 7cm are we?
Would be easier to link but can't be bovvahed searching...

Parasaurolophus · 12/01/2012 10:02

Scarlet76, that is fantastic S&B advice.

notso · 12/01/2012 10:16

Two questions;
Is it still OK to wear converse if your 11 yo daughter lives in them?

What should you wear on top if you are too fat for skinny?

akaemmafrost · 12/01/2012 10:44

Ok, I did wonder because everywhere still seems to be selling them though don't they? Next, River Island, Gap are just three places I've seen them. I think they've been updated really by narrowing the boot cut somewhat. That's good advice scarlet, thanks.

I live in Converse and I am 40.

I am wearing a pair today They are tight and skinny on the thigh black and I haven't worn them in years but they really feel great and look very flattering. I think m and s mid blue shapeless are a no but slim ones that fit well can be cool.

NewYearsRevolution · 12/01/2012 10:53

Everywhere sells them because, let's face it, skinny jeans are not flattering on a lot of women. I know you can wear a tunic and all that, but sometimes you don't want a long top and a boot cut can be far more forgiving.

I think the key is a slim boot cut, or an actual flare if you are going for that very specific vibe. The ones that tend to look awful are those that are neither one thing or the other. A boot cut should really just allow ankle boots to fit comfortably underneath (in terms of width. I'd agree I normally wear mine with converse), not flap about.

Ephiny · 12/01/2012 10:58

I never stopped wearing bootcuts, they're a lot more flattering for me. Agree they look awful if too short (though being short myself that's not a problem I usually have!).

I like the 'long and lean' style from Gap, very flattering and comfortable, and one of the rare styles that actually fits me without gaping at the back.

startail · 12/01/2012 11:01

Who cares. I have boot cut trousers, straight trousers and skinny jeggings.
All I care about is that they sit on my waist and go over my size 16 bum.
Which I wear on any particular day depends on which boots.
My one fashion weakness is expensive long boots. So if I need cheering up it's tight trousers under long boots.
If it's wet it's mumboots and short bootlegs.

devonshireduckling · 12/01/2012 11:08

Could you wear some of the new flares? they look flattering, and are fashionable in a Chloe/60s/70s way?

They've been in Topshop and everything

notyummy · 12/01/2012 11:10

I think either skinny flares (Top Shop), Long and Lean as mentioned above or Top Shop Jessies are all fab jeans that could also possibly described as boot cut from a casual glance. The are slim cut on the thigh though and wore at the right length are hugely flattering.

And as others have said - it depends on how you wear them. With mum heels and a big fleece....not so great.

Biker boots and slouchy jumper in a nice colour - much better.

OnlyANinja · 12/01/2012 11:13

Of course you can - what do you think will happen?

kbaby · 12/01/2012 22:48

I wear them with brown wedge boots but that's because I like skinny jeans but can't seem to get my head around wearing them with anything other than long boots. I'm possibly not the right person to be giving advice on here Blush

LordOfTheFlies · 12/01/2012 23:48

I wear faded bootcuts with either a brown jodhpur boot (small heel) style or black lace-up boots, depending on my handbag.

I'm a bit of a Status Quo throwback IRL.

Is this frowned upon??

southeastastra · 12/01/2012 23:49

straight cut leg looks nicer, it just does - gap 1969
