Help for Untraditional Wedding Dress - Budget up to 3k?

lesley33 · 04/01/2012 15:29

I am getting married in late summer. We are having a smallish informal type wedding - about 70 people. I want to look great on my big day, but I don't want a big white wedding dress. I am having trouble finding something suitable and I wondered whether anyone had any ideas?

I am 47, a size 16. 5ft 3 and would be an hourglass figure if still slimmer. I have dark hair and a "celtic" type face. I have large breasts - even when i was slim. After 4 DCs I have various lumps and bumps, so a dress could not be clingy. I also have disproportionately large upper arms so need a dress with a sleeve to at least the elbow. I don't want to wear a wrap that I constantly have to be adjusting.

I like stylish, elegant dresses and most colours, particularly red, but also green, blue and multi-coloured. Although I don't like gold colour. I don't like lots of ruffles i.e. too flouncy in a feminine way. I would prefer knee length or a long dress. And I have to be able to dance in it. Happy to spend less, but could spend up to 3k.

Any ideas?

A 1950's ballerina length dress with a sweetheart neckline and full skirt.

Very beautiful - but don't you think I am a bit old for this look?

redrubyshoes · 04/01/2012 15:41

from the same website

redrubyshoes · 04/01/2012 15:50

I am a similar shape to you and the fifties styles tend to be quite flattering and suited to larger boobs and an hour glass figure.

I must admit that there are some amazing dresses on that website

Hmm Grin
Ifancyashandy · 04/01/2012 15:50

Something like this?

stuffthenonsense · 04/01/2012 15:53

Heleninahandcart · 04/01/2012 16:07

You'd look wonderful in that forties style. I personally think the first style would also be stunning in full length, 3/4 sleeves for both. No you're certainly not too old, the 40s and 59s looks are ageless and Laydee like :)

Heleninahandcart · 04/01/2012 16:08

50s not 59s which would be a little bit specific

tethersend · 04/01/2012 16:10

Told you, lesley Wink

tethersend · 04/01/2012 16:11

Can I link to your first thread for background?

lesley33 · 04/01/2012 16:15

Thanks tethersend - you were right. Yes please link

How about a medieval style dress?

Becaroooo · 04/01/2012 16:17

I was going to suggest 1950s style...with a bolero jacket and kitten heals?

Think Grace Kelly

Congrats

Becaroooo · 04/01/2012 16:17

"heels" even

sigh.

Its been a long day.........

SirCliffRichardSucksEggsInHell · 04/01/2012 16:17

Or an Indian style dress like Bollywood?

lesley33 · 04/01/2012 16:21

The blue celtic dress is a bit too alternative for me tbh, although it is a lovely colour. And the sleeves do need to be proper sleeves - not just a small sleeve at the shoulder. Sorry - I have got a bit of a think about my fat upper arms! Even when I was slim they always seemed massively disproportionate.

I'll have to try on a dress like the ballerina - 40's style dress and see how it looks then. I personally think it would suit me better if I was a bit slimmer as I agree it suits an hourglass figure that isn't fat.

OP posts:
Heleninahandcart · 04/01/2012 16:24

Size 16 is not fat. With the right corset underwear as long as An hourglass has her waist all is fine.

redrubyshoes · 04/01/2012 16:25

I am getting obsessed now

lesley33 · 04/01/2012 16:29

Sorry don't like the polka dot look. I had wondered about indian style or bolero jacket myself.

Oh and congratulations Grin

shelldockley · 04/01/2012 16:33

You should look at Candy Anthony, her dresses are amazing, the best 50s style dresses you can get. If you have facebook, add them and you'll find tons of pics on there. Prices are around £1k>

What about something like the dress Marilyn Monroe wears for her wedding in "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"? That would look very classy, can't remember if it had arms or not.
