in black

She does wear short dresses but normally with thick tights or leggings

I'm a bit conflicted probably because I don't want her to grow up

Just had a look on your profile - what a lovely looking girl she is (plus brilliant photos of her dancing).

KatyMac · 05/12/2011 16:39

Thanks - you can see she likes a bit of colour can't you?

She's such a good girl (mot of the time - when she isn't winding me up unbelievably) & she normally gets undies in her stocking, but as we go away the next day I thought a cheap dress might be nice

& I'll only have to buy one for NYE anyway as she has nothing suitable

I let her wear clothes a bit 'barer' for competitions but I would never let her wear them 'out' iyswim; her legs are fine to show imo - she wears shorts and a short skirt is hardly different

Is she a big girl for her age - she looks very petite in the pics (don't know how old they are).

Just asking because she may prefer the teen ranges that shops do - the 9-15 stuff from Asda, and New Look do a young girl range, they may be more suitable.

There are some bright dresses on that asos link - some of them are a bit pricy though.

Get0rf · 05/12/2011 16:45

red dress

coral dress

sequin dress

All £15 and under.

Get0rf · 05/12/2011 16:48

G21 is the asda youth range - direct.asda.com/george/women-s/G21/g21-oriental-playsuit/GEM75341,default,pd.html here is a playsuit which she may like.

KatyMac · 05/12/2011 16:56

never thought of Asda she would have loved this if it wasn't OOS

Have you tried Pilot?
chiffon
one shoulder
probably hopeless but the sort of thing I'd have tried to get past my mum when I was 14
too much emphasis on the bust?
strapless

FauxFox · 05/12/2011 17:47

perfect £26

KatyMac · 05/12/2011 18:11

Yep - i'd buy that in an instant......if they had her size Wink

FauxFox · 05/12/2011 19:54

They have age 14 in stock as far as I can see...

goingmadinthecountry · 05/12/2011 20:54

I don't think it's unsuitable for a 14 yo - wouldn't have had issues letting my girls dress like that at 14 - just think the flowery bits make it look a bit old an frumpy. However, if she likes it.

FWIW, mums who aren't there yet, short dress does not equal tarty these days. My dds are far from tarty but wear their fair share of short dresses. Appropriately.

KatyMac · 05/12/2011 20:59

How odd

Mine says out of stock..........gulp they don't want me to have it Blush

redglow · 05/12/2011 22:35

I love it katymac when not where these things when you are young and can carry it of.

mathanxiety · 05/12/2011 22:54

Forever21 has good cheap stuff that is wearable. Some of it is a bit trampy but not all by any means.

DD3 (13) recently got this in small.

DD2 (16) liked this but the colour washed her out a bit.

KatyMac · 06/12/2011 18:21

How about these?
purple
pink
yellow

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 06/12/2011 18:48

The problem with the purple and yellow on a cruise would be the possibility that a little breeze on deck could send that sort of babydoll style skyward, and walking up stairs inside the ship would mean a view of knickers for everyone behind her. The pink one seems a bit flashy, with the shiny fabric and the jewelled neckline. Again, the skirt is very full.

How about this?

KatyMac · 06/12/2011 19:32

That's nice

She would like this but I think it would be too big for her

OP posts:
KatyMac · 06/12/2011 21:18

I gave in & talked to her about it she likes the first one but doesn't want it & definitely doesn't want pastels - she really likes this one - but feels it is too old for her

So.......everything we have been looking for has been wrong

OP posts:
KatyMac · 07/12/2011 10:45

& this morning I over heard her saying to her dad "I don't like any of the dresses Mummy showed me, maybe she should make me one"

So I need to get the sewing machine out

OP posts:
wahwahwah · 07/12/2011 12:15

Just come back to this thread. If she has some ideas, I am sure between the one million of us on MN we can source it for you.

Cracks fingers and poises over keyboard - so what does she want?

PastGrace · 07/12/2011 18:02

Are any of these any good?
pilot. Similar to the one your DD liked, but I think the spots make it a bit younger?

Oasis lace but a younger style?

simple shift

too floral?

"slinkier" shape

tunic

The Oasis sale has lots of dresses at the moment, and much cheaper than they would normally be

KatyMac · 07/12/2011 19:28

I think I'll need to make her something now she has asked

I have the material for:

an A line shift in lime green or purple satin
a knee length full circle (50's ) V neck in cerise/back shot silk (very 80's)
a dogstooth check pencil skirt (not for the party)
some rust linen (that I wanted for me) which I could do anything with
burgundy cotton
a pastel dolly mixture (lilacs) cotton
black with green leaves cotton which might work with the lime green satin

I also have some purple sparkling lycra so she could have leotard/body with full circle satin skirt

too much choice

KatyMac · 07/12/2011 20:54

Just to say - Thank you all for your input

I know loads more about dresses (& shops) than I did before & DD is very happy with the whole dress thing......all three of them I have to make

OP posts:
mathanxiety · 07/12/2011 21:01

How lovely that your DD has confidence in you to produce something nice for her Smile.

I have been told to stick to Halloween costumes...
