in black

She does wear short dresses but normally with thick tights or leggings

I'm a bit conflicted probably because I don't want her to grow up

Well, how the bloody hell was I to know, was only trying to help.

MarthasHarbour · 04/12/2011 23:02

crikey getorf she was only saying!... Hmm

actually i really liked the dress in the OP, with black tights i would have loved to have worn that at 14, and dont think it is lolita at all

Get0rf · 04/12/2011 23:05

And so was I - mind you I didn't mean that to read as stroppy as it looks, so apols Smile

I don't think lolita either, but strapless bras with that kind of dress looks a bit odd tbh.

MarthasHarbour · 04/12/2011 23:08

yep was a rather stroppy over reaction,

will she even need a bra at all? i only ask as i was a pancake when i was 14 Blush though a flesh coloured strapless bandeau would prob work, i see from the pics she is mixed race so i think you can get some nice coloured bandeaus to do the trick that would match her flesh tone rather than a black or white which would show through

Get0rf · 04/12/2011 23:11

My dd would have needed a bra at that age - I think you can pick up bandeau type things from primark for a couple of quid.

ameliagrey · 05/12/2011 07:14

OP this might be a silly question- but why, at 14, are you choosing her dresses? Doesn't she choose her own clothes- with a tiny bit of approval helpfrom you?

I'm sure there must be loads of nice dresses in New Look, Top Shop, H&M, that are nicer.

KatyMac · 05/12/2011 07:41

a 'present'?

It's December.....I have a stocking to fill

OP posts:
miserablenovember · 05/12/2011 08:38

Blimey- my DD used to get a box of chocs and a satsuma Smile as a stocking filler not a dress!

upahill · 05/12/2011 09:37

If was a teenager I would definatly wear it.
Sadly I would look mad in it.

Ilovepigs · 05/12/2011 14:37

katy-no I dont have teenagers-my own dd is a lot younger.

However I dont agree with parents letting their teenagers-especially girls-going about looking like glmaour models. Its vile.

I am sure my dd will think I am a stuffy old fart when I put my foot down but hey ho-thats being a parent right?

KatyMac · 05/12/2011 14:41

You see, that is so much more covered than most of the dresses for youngsters her age.

I saw it as a pretty smock/tunic over leggings/tights for a glamorous New Years Eve party on a cruise

I don't like the nightie connotation for her & I think if it wasn't white and black (ie red & black or purple & pink) that wouldn't be happening

Finding a dress with a 'decent' top is hard

MamaLazarou · 05/12/2011 15:00

yes, it's lovely for a 14-yr-old.

said · 05/12/2011 15:38

ilovemypig see you back here in 19 years ans see what you post then WinkGrin

www.republic.co.uk/dresses/miso-embellished-waist-one-shoulder-dress/invt/97046/ Any good? Most 14-year olds love Republic.

said · 05/12/2011 15:40

Oops. ilovepigs I mean. Sorry.

wahwahwah · 05/12/2011 15:51

Pretty. Would be nice with flat shoes. I like the way the photo is captioned with the models height and dress size.

LaurieFairyCake · 05/12/2011 15:53

My 13 and a half year old says it's fine with leggings but she wouldn't wear it (too girly) so be very sure she's really girly

ameliagrey · 05/12/2011 15:54

My DD is now 23 but at 14 I would not have allowedwanted her to go out with bare shoulders on a new year- on ship or dry land.

I think it's a bit too tarty looking. sorry .

said · 05/12/2011 16:00

what's going to happen if teens bare their shoulders? Confused

Get0rf · 05/12/2011 16:07

What's up with shoulders amelia? Perhaps the cruise will be in a hot place in NYE.

KatyMac · 05/12/2011 16:18

she'd like this but it's too strappy imo

OP posts:
KatyMac · 05/12/2011 16:22

this ones nice but I think she wanted a bit more drama

She wouldn't wear the long sleeved one I don't think & the others were a bit bare (round the cleavage)

OP posts:
Get0rf · 05/12/2011 16:24

I am not sure what style she really likes but asos has a load of dresses on sale here

That dress you have linked to is very nice but is rather low cut, tbh.

KatyMac · 05/12/2011 16:27

It was one of the ones AvadventKalendar suggested - I don't like them too bare around the top

Bare arms I have no problem with Smile

DD is very dramatic, lots of colour & a dancer (Pics on profile), but I kind of time down her choice - she would have liked the drama of the first dress

OP posts:
Get0rf · 05/12/2011 16:32

I have never heard of Bonprix - there are some nice dresses on there.

TBH i think the first dress you linked to is fine - if you think that she owuld like that I would go for it, tbh. I don't think it is tarty at all. Plus, you are not buying it for her to hang around with her mates in, ity is for a cruise, which I think is different.
