Sock buns! Who does them and do you wear the bun or do it just for the curls?

I like the curls and volume I get from wearing the sock bun overnight, but I kind of also like the bun...just not sure whether it looks good or like there's a massive doughnut sitting on my head Grin

pud1 hope it works for you - don't give up first try if it doesn't. Try it on dirty hair, clean hair, damp hair, dry hair with just the ponytail sprayed to dampen it, freshly washed hair with a bit of hair gel in it... For me it works best on dry hair that has been washed a day or two earlier. The curls come out too crazy and fluffy if I do it on freshly washed hair.

I found out how to do this just a couple of weeks ago. First time my mum and oldest sister saw me thar both exclaimed, "Oh, I love your hair!" I thought they were talking to someone else as they are more likely to tell me I look like a tramp than to compliment me! Grin So they must have really liked it.

When I do a normal bun I always feel like I have a freakishly large head as the bun is so small so I like that the sock makes it a giant bun, it's more balanced, iykwim.

pud1 · 29/11/2011 13:10

Thanks sprogger. I have done it today with hair that was washed on sunday and have stayed with water. Have really thick hair so thinking I might need some product on it.

pud1 · 29/11/2011 13:11

Sorry I mean thanks scarydragontalk

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 13:17

You're welcome pud1

OvO do you wear it as a really neat bun, or slightly dishevelled? I love the messy bun look but am struggling to achieve it with the sock bun, it always ends up too neat and severe-looking. But, like you, my natural bun is tiny tiny so I need the sock help!

Mine is always slightly dishevelled. Grin

I can't get it to look really neat no matter how I try!

natashakaplinkyplop · 29/11/2011 15:04

I've done it a few times with the sock overnight for curls, got photos on my profile from 2nd attempt.

I have got a donut from boots that i've worn during the day, but mine's been a messy bun, I can't manage the smooth perfect ones.

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 15:08

Ooh, you have gorgeous hair natasha. I guess I just need to be less careful doing my bun so it doesn't turn out so neat! Will be looking in boots or claire's for one of the hair-covered donuts - much better plan than a stripy sock Grin

Hee hee, I thought this was gonna be like a nappy cake! Grin

totallylost · 29/11/2011 15:46

What a coincidence - put my hair in a sock bun today for the first time. Looked ok I think and stayed in despite the gale blowing outside.

pud1 · 29/11/2011 15:48

If mine turns put like Natasha I will be a very happy lady. Thats lovely

pud1 · 29/11/2011 16:06

Have just took it out to look. It has defiantly curled but looks very frizzy.

pud1 · 29/11/2011 16:08

I also put it on top of my head. Might try it a bit further back. It just looked to volumous ( is that a word)

montmartre · 29/11/2011 16:16

Goodness Natasha! What luscious hair you have Smile

Are you Nigella? Grin

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 16:17

Voluminous! I had that problem too, I found that in between the top of my head and the middle of the back of my head looked best. If that makes sense Confused

pud1 try sleeping with it in. It's not uncomfortable if you put the bun right on top of your head. But you are unlikely to get laid wearing it

I just took mine out, I think my hair was too damp as its still slightly damp now and too clean (I wash it every day) I think I'll try again tomorrow with out washing my hair and using less water.

fluffylegs · 29/11/2011 19:09

That made in Pretoria pic tutorial is good. I'm going to try it tonight! I've got very curly hair ( think eighties perm) so I'm hoping this will tame it a bit.

toboldlygo · 29/11/2011 19:13

Spin Pins trump the sock bun for ease of use and durability, I've found, and are a quid from Home Bargains type places. I do the sock bun overnight though for curls, nicer to sleep in, I wash, use a load of Boots curl creme and bun it up for nice curls in the morning.

natashakaplinkyplop · 30/11/2011 21:51

Thanks, scary, pud and montmartre
It doesn't always look like that though.

And yes... I am nigella Wink

Liliana1 · 30/11/2011 22:10

Never heard of this before but off to have a go now. Hope I have lovely surls in the morning

WhoKnowsWhereTheMistletoes · 30/11/2011 23:16

I've tried this over night for curls and it works very well but I feel so cold without my hair over my ears and neck that I've given up Sad

Liliana1 · 01/12/2011 07:16

Struggled to get mine to curl over the sock, eventually my arms got tired and I sort of twisted it through. Not worked great but more to my inability to do simple things with my hair than anything else. Will try again tonight!

and obviously previous post was Curls, not Surls!!!

addictediam · 01/12/2011 07:24

Mine didn't work very well, but I think if i wrap it neeter and tighter and use some sort of spray jel, serium thingy to hold it in it might work better. I am not going to give up!
