Sock buns! Who does them and do you wear the bun or do it just for the curls?

I like the curls and volume I get from wearing the sock bun overnight, but I kind of also like the bun...just not sure whether it looks good or like there's a massive doughnut sitting on my head Grin

Oohhh. What's a sock bun?

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 11:20

Yes! Someone who is later to the sock bun party than I am! This lady explains it well:

They also explain it well. You roll a sock into a donut, put your hair up into a pony tail on top of your head and roll the hair around the sock. Then you can sleep in it very comfortably and you have great curls the next day.

Ooh, you have to cut the toe off the sock first... maybe just ignore my attempt to explain and watch the vids Smile

mmnn not sure myself - I made one the other day but as my hair is quite fine it does look like a donut - it is the whole in the middle that is a bit weird...

bridgeandbow · 29/11/2011 11:25

that should be hole not whole - honest!!

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 11:28

My hair is quite fine too, maybe that is the problem. I also have the fear of the sock showing if my hair slips!

I bought some brown m&s socks with pale stripes especially to make the sock donut...cos my hair is brown with highlights Grin

In hindsight, having a stripy sock on my head looks a bit weirder than just a plain one...

ooh, bridgeandbow, my new plan is to use kids socks - I think they might work better on fine hair as the hole will be smaller. Then my bun might be less massive and odd-looking too.

addictediam · 29/11/2011 11:42

How cool! I'm off to try it out!

bridgeandbow · 29/11/2011 11:44

Rather than buying new socks just to cut them up you might be better buying the proper foam donut (that the sock is effectively copying). They sell them in boots and the like..

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 11:46

It's not just new socks I've been cutting up - also old ones, tights and my DHs Grin I might have a look for a proper one, but they all look really massive to me and I've read that socks work better anyway.

Ah, the sock bun, beloved by DD(7) and female cabin crew!
Just go to Claire's and buy a proper doughnut, in the right colour and size for your hair. Much easier - LOL at scary's stripey sock Grin

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 12:07

Oh, chippy, thanks, didn't realise they do different sizes and everything! I will be going to Claire's on my way home and sorting out my cabin crew look once and for all!

I do dd1's hair for ballet with a sock. It always stays in well although I do pin it within an inch of its life. I have a couple of corkscrew hair pins & they do a fabulous job.

Never done the curls thing though.

BalloonSlayer · 29/11/2011 12:15

That youtube video is all very well but you can't see how she rolls the hair into the sock which is the whole bloody point. What do you do?

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 12:17

The other video links I posted show it better. The first video is showing the sock bun for curls method. She does say this at the beginning and a link comes up if you want to see her video on how to do the actual hair rolling.

BalloonSlayer · 29/11/2011 12:19

Thanks Scary! I just found another which shows how to do it. Think I might make a balls of it with DD's hair though.

HughBastard · 29/11/2011 12:21

So you've got a pony tail with a butchered sock around it... how do you persuade the hair to wrap around and tuck under it?

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 12:22

Actually, 'the other emily' uses a slightly different method of just spreading the hair over the sock and pinning it under - I guess that would work best if you have shorter, thick hair.

To do the sock rolling, you thread the tip of your ponytail through the middle of the sock doughnut and start rolling the doughnut down your ponytail while tucking the ends under. Try to spread the hair all around the doughnut as you go.

Here is a pictorial explanation!madeinpretoria.wordpress.com/2011/10/03/the-sock-bun-diy-big-hair-bun/

Well hair is up in a bun, I think it looks ok, but might need to get some smaller socks (or a proper So-nut) as about 1inch of the sock is on show. It took 3 minutes to put up so if it looks nice curled it will definitely something I will do on future! (this s&b section gets quite addictive doesn't it! I'm so excited about my babyliss big hair I'm getting for christmas :o)

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 12:25

HAHA addicted I just bought the babyliss big hair too! It's getting totally neglected due to my new sock bun obsession, but its really great - if you have a spare ten minutes to do your hair that is. I need hair techniques that take 3 mins or less!

OP posts:
addictediam · 29/11/2011 12:27

That method was too difficult for me and next to impossible due to layers. So i put the sock around the pony tail and wrapped it buy just pulling the hair through. Its very neat.

Scarydragontalk · 29/11/2011 12:31

Glad you have a good bun now addicted. I will have to try your method now too! You should make a video of it and post it all over Pinterest Grin

addictediam · 29/11/2011 12:37

Lol I know what you mean about 3 minutes or less with dd2 due in 8 weeks and dd1 being only 13 months old most days I leave the house with dripping wet hair as I don't have time to do any more than just comb it through.

pud1 · 29/11/2011 12:44

This is genius. Just cut up one of oh sock. That's my Christmas hair sorted. Hope it works. I love having my hair curly but can never be arsed doing it.
