I give up.....where do you find boots to fit over big calfs?

I have spent the whole afternoon trying on boots. In an ideal world i would like leather knee high tan boots with a round toe.....funky more than smart.
In the real world i world i would have been happy if any of them had fitted round my calves.I was feeling pretty bad till i saw a woman throw a pair of boots back on the shelf as they didnt fit her either. She told me i was the 3rd person she had seen today having the same problem.
Have looked in Clarks,Next, Marks and Spencers, even evans but they were bigger all over and online at Duo ( need to try on for that money) Viva la shoes, Marisota etc....
Can anybody help me find a pair before i go mad with frustration?
Thanks

Watching with interest...
I did buy a pair of M&S boots and these are the first pair of long boots I have ever been able to do up!! They have a fake lace up detail on the front and a low heel. I am very excited and can't wait to wear them!! I have huge problems buying wellies as I have such enourmous calves and fairly narrow ankles.
Good Luck!

slug · 27/10/2011 17:56

While a massive Duo fan, I can also report that Timberland come up wide in the calf department

Carrotsandcelery · 27/10/2011 18:42

This thread is making me wonder if everyone does have enormous calves or if boots are just made too narrow. I know lots and lots of slim women who can't get boots to fit. Hmm

Tamoo · 27/10/2011 18:48

I've had this problem, my current long boots are from Office. Prob not fantastic quality but they fit.

HattiFattner · 27/10/2011 18:52

i second the Asda boots. My calves are substantial (im a size 20) and they fit well and are nice and soft after a couple of wears.

catmadcaz · 27/10/2011 18:55

Evans make boots for large calfs. 20% off at moment too

musttidyupmusttidyup · 27/10/2011 19:11

I bought these today. They are look lovely and are comfy and hidden elastic panel at the top so do for chunky-ish (like me) calves. I can get them over jeans (just) Bargain. Grin

StantonLacy · 27/10/2011 20:46

gailforce1 try Aigle Parcours Vario wellies.

www.aigleboots.co.uk/acatalog/Aigle_Parcours_Vario_Black.html

They are honestly fantastic, if pricey. I've got rather rotund, shall we say, calves and these fit a treat. They are also quite fitted on the ankle, so none of that nasty bagginess. Very comfortable, too.

BoogiesBunny · 27/10/2011 21:25

Definately Duo for a great selection and quality. But.... have you ever tried looping a shoe lace/string through the zip of boots and zipping them up? This makes a big difference! Doing this I can zip up boots which only come up past my ankle when I use my hand - although it is helped even further if there is at least one strip of elastic down the back of the boot. Russell and Bromley do a number of styles like this (but I buy them and use the shoe lace trick as home as not sure they'd be too happy if I did that in the shop!).

nobodysfool · 27/10/2011 21:32

So glad its not only me who is having problems...was begining to think i was a freak!
I have ordered the Asda black boots and keeping my fingers crossed.
Wow have never thought to use a shoe lace to help do them up will def try this thanks.
Looks like need a trip to London to the Holy grail of boots also know as Duo.
Thanks all....not only have i got some great ideas i dont feel like im alone in the search.

I have 4 pairs of Duo boots (collected over the course of 6 years I might add!) and can't fault the quality - the oldest ones are the ones I wear most regularly and still have plenty of life in them. I am fortunate enough to live close enough to the Bath store but here's a tip if trying on at home - you should only just be able to get them done up, they will feel tight but that is OK as they will give.

I have tried various other places, including Clarks wide fit, with no luck. Duo is expensive but I have resigned myself to the fact I must pay £££ to accommodate my chunky calves (DH is slightly less accepting of this fact!)

gailforce1 · 28/10/2011 20:46

stantonLacy many thanks for the info on the wellies. They are expensive but Christmas is coming and I wear them everyday so if they are good quality and last a long time I think it is justified!

LolaLadybird · 29/10/2011 08:38

I also have those Aigle wellies and can second that they are great. If you are really feeling flush go for the neoprene lined version, v toasty for winter. I tried them but as well as balking slightly at the price, was also concerned that they might be a bit warm for a wet but warm spring day.

Noodlemacdoodle · 09/11/2011 11:21

Try Episode Peru style - 3 buckle riding boots. I have them in black and they fit my size 14 calves. They are in house of fraser, but can't get the link to work.
Expensive though, but they had an offer on when i got them

Mrsrobertduvall · 09/11/2011 11:37

Agree with Duo quality, but I have the opposite problem- very slim calves.
Gabor boots come up wide.

LittleFriendSusan · 09/11/2011 12:21

I have the same problem, coupled with wide feet and high insteps, boot-buying is a nightmare. Last year I must have tried on 30+ pairs of boots before I found some that fitted (in Dorothy Perkins / Barrats of all places...). TK Maxx had some lovely Timberland riding type boots in recently - I could just get them zipped up but I found them very narrow in the foot part so not at all comfortable. Shame as they were lovely.

I tried some brown leather boots in Asda which were a perfect fit - internet is playing up for me at the moment so can't see previous link, but wonder if they're the same as the black ones mentioned above?

Don't try Fly boots - they come up really narrow on the calves.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 09/11/2011 13:45

Might be the brown ones I tried to link above. They are sooo comfy. Only £40.

angelinterceptor · 10/11/2011 13:30

I have ordered the Asda boots - on all the recommendations above - I have big legs, (and I am size 18), I have NEVER been able to zip up any ladies boots.
I can't even fit into fancy ladies wellies - have to get ordinary farmer type ones to get my legs and trousers into!

Hoope they fit - should be here tomorrow

mirpuppet · 10/11/2011 13:38

How do Asda boots come up for foot size? I'm usually a half size, which they don't do.

musttidyupmusttidyup · 10/11/2011 14:33

I am prob a 4.5 these days. Mine are a 5 and v generous.

BerylStreep · 13/11/2011 01:02

I'm so glad I'm not alone.

I wear those stretchy sock type ones, but I'd love some smart leather boots.

Will look at Evans & Duo

Sciencegeekmum · 13/11/2011 03:36

I got these ones www.marksandspencer.com/Footglove-Wide-Leather-Riding-Boots/dp/B00508HFAA?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_3&nodeId=835441031&sr=1-3&qid=1321155215&pf_rd_r=0V07J26672MKXZM50APJ&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=101&pf_rd_i=835441031&pf_rd_p=215570647&pf_rd_s=related-items-3 which are the first boots I've ever been able to just 'zip and go'. Bit chunky for my hubby but wonderfully comfy and go over my jeans too!

angelinterceptor · 13/11/2011 20:38

The Asda boots arrived last night.
I tried them on this morning. They are really really tight so I'm not sure if it will be a good look.
Maybe I can stretch them a bit as they are good value.

workshy · 13/11/2011 20:44

evans -been getting boots from them for 5 years

wide feet & high arches & big calves = boot nightmare

most places I'm a 10 don't laugh, I am 6 ft tall!!! but I can get away with a 9 in evans so feel slightly more normal lol

wishingchair · 03/01/2012 12:04

I got these from Next the other day: www.next.co.uk/x492384s7#837064x49. I too have ample calves and have wept tears of bitter frustration in shops before now. These just pull on. Actually can see on the website they do them in wide fit too ... I just have regular fit and they fit fine.
