Best winter boots for school run?

AnnieMated · 20/10/2011 19:08

I'm in dire need of a new pair of boots, mainly for the school run to be honest and kicking around in at the weekends - was so flipping cold this morning and my feet looked beyond tragic in little nude patent ballet pumps.

Basic criteria are no heels, warm, long lasting and under a hundred quid. Oh and brown if possible and definitely not black or UGGS.

Front runners are currently these: www.schuh.co.uk/rocket-dog/womens-dark-brown-rocket-dog-sugar-daddy/1503336150

I'm also tempted by a pair of navy blue/duck egg Hunters with the big fleece sock liner things for extra warmth.

Any ideas, comments or suggestions please? :)

I emptied an entire tin of Scotchguard into a pair of Primark £6 cheapies last year.

I walked to work through 3" of snow for a couple of weeks then three weeks of thunder storms and had dry toastie feet the whole time Blush

M & S have a lovely selection of boots this year, really I was very impressed. Would never have bought boots from there, I tend to go for rocket dog styles. But they are really quite funky and lots to choose from. Mine cost £65 and have weather repellent leather/suede and very comfy.

AnnieMated · 21/10/2011 17:40

Wow - thanks so much everyone! Bit Blush as not only did this thread (only my 4th I have ever dared start here btw!) make it onto the discussions on the day section on the Mumsnet homepage, but you've all taken the time to post such great ideas. I shall browse through them all in far more detail over the weekend. Fanks!

Josie

I'm a 7-7.5 and the 7's are perfect, even with thicker socks.

I am the opposite of some previous posters...I am very light on my shoes. My Rocket dog Sugar Daddy boots are still looking good having worn them all last winter. I'd actually say they have improved as they have gone a bit darker with dark (they seemed a bit orange when new). Much cheaper and look better than Uggs. Though also not water proof. I have just bought these Blush at price. But I got them from Boots where I get a staff discount, and after bonus points (they have points event this weekend) they worked out around £120. If you are thinking about any fitflop styles check out Boots online as there is this advantage points event so it can work out as a bit of a discount.

I think I tried on all the boots mentioned here from Schuh last night. Loved the Rocket Dog ones with the zip but after I tried on these they were blown out the window. So comfy and warm!

MonaMcKenzie · 21/10/2011 18:45

You know what I would like? Boots that have grip. Just so I don't go ass over tit into the snow again.
kthanks

Bienchen · 21/10/2011 18:45

If you have got smallish feet, Boden (runs and ducks) is a good choice. Got a red pair about 3 years ago and they have held up very well. Toasty as well.

My stupid computer is not working well right now so I can't link it, but I recommend Sorel's Joan of Arctic boots to everyone. They're fabulous, come in brown, and keep me warm in the middle of the Minnesotan winter.

FearfulYank · 21/10/2011 18:59

Ah, here they are! :) Love them.

trixymalixy · 21/10/2011 18:59

I have had several pairs of the rocket dog sugar daddy boots. I love them, but they are not good for snow, it just soaks right through them.

DarrellRivers · 21/10/2011 19:08

Darn you evil Mumsnetters
I now want a pair of Merrell Oslo boots
Didn't even want a new pair of warm shearling lined waterproof boots

frankie3 · 21/10/2011 19:42

Has anyone got the hunter boots with the inner sock ? I'm not a hunter boots sort of person but these look really good for when there is thick snow. My uggs are fine for when it is just cold and icy out.

SmethWitchBelle · 21/10/2011 19:54

I agree Flys let in water and after one year the sole is lifting and the stitching coming undone.

Some friends have recommended the Dr Marten Elena

www.amazon.co.uk/Martens-Womens-Elena-Black-13676001/dp/B003JBHCG2/ref=sr_1_fkmr3_1?s=shoes&ie=UTF8&qid=1319216049&sr=1-1-fkmr3

Might give them a try or the Camper brand.

Jymjamjen · 21/10/2011 20:02

I'm looking for something the same. A few years ago I bought a lovely pair of suede moccasin type brown boots from Next which were sooo comfy but they are now falling apart the closest I've found are these www.next.co.uk/g473226s3#801755g47 but they have a wedge heel so not sure how comfy they will be. Ideally I want flats too

cerealqueen · 21/10/2011 21:10

In the eighties I wore Dr Martens all the time and never ever had cold feet, must have been the air wear sole which provided insulation, so really hankering after the wedge sole boots somebody linked to earlier. However, I'm also posting on the thread about how to save money on the heating bills and can't really justify the cost. Can I? Hmm

Moosy · 21/10/2011 21:45

I have some Doc Marten authentic wedges in red which are SO comfy and there's space for thick socks when it's v cold.

I also have flys which are nice and warm and comfy for walking in but do let in water a bit.

My favourites though are some Merrells spirit tibets which I've had for 4 years and have worn from october to april each year and are only just starting to get a bit worn now. They're super warm and grippy too. I don't know if they still make them the same but they're kind of a cross between the yarra and the puffin I think.

MrsChemist · 21/10/2011 22:23

I love these but ca't afford them :(

Jumbs · 21/10/2011 23:10

I am going to echo the merrell boots recommendations. I have tempests in brown. They are so warm my feet were sweating despite last decembers snow Blush. Plus, they are mega comfy. They come up big tho, I'm a 7 and got a 6. My colleague has about 4 pairs of merrell boots, i'm hankering after puffin frosts but can't justify it!

Also got the DM ones Autumn witch linked to, going strong and on 3rd yr with no visible signs of wear. Not a patch on the merrells for warmth tho.

deviladvocate · 21/10/2011 23:31

I haven't bought shoes online, thinking i'd like to try the merrells on - anyone know where they sell through? Had a look at the Merrell's website but it doesn't specify which ranges sell where. I'm near Cambridge but would be thrilled prepared to travel to westfield or bluewater to try some out

Earthymama · 22/10/2011 01:30

I hate hate Hate having cold feet, I suffer (badly) with psioritic arthritis and DP insisted last year that I bought a decent pair of boots so I got these. I loved them so much that I have just bought these Blush
I know they aren't sleek or stylish but the do suit my rather idiosyncratic style and they are like swansdown slippers!!

Earthymama · 22/10/2011 01:33

Oh and I paid about £90 last year for the tan pair in Buzz in Cardiff, (which I do recommend) and £75 on ebay for the black pair.

If I could only find a hat that suits me!!

My younger face looked wonderful in a hat....just like DD does now Envy Wink

TheHumancatapult · 22/10/2011 06:39

cheerfull yank im liking the look of them wonder if can get in the uk

I just want warm . Waterproof not issue as am non walker so no wearing them down but just because do not walk would like pair that looks good to but warm main priorty

NorksAreMessy · 22/10/2011 06:52

My problem is apparently I have abnormally gigantic calves (not the moo kind, the kind you get from walking up hills a lot).

My search is for brown, long (over knee if possible) leather boots with an elastic panel up the back. I have them in black from R&B (cost an arm and a leg, but £per wear very low)
Duo do not have any flat, brown over knee boots, so that doesn't work either

Help please

ButteredCrumpet · 22/10/2011 07:29

Toggi boots are quite popular around here. A couple of my friends have them and they basically function like wellies (waterfproof) but more stylish. We are very rural around there tho' ....
