I need coats for both dses (1 and 4), preferably waterproof. But they need to be WARM (we like to be outside lots). Can anyone suggest anything? I often think they are not warm enough when I see them in the shops...

Thanks!

I have just bought DS (3) a skiing type jacket from H&M which looks absolutely spot on. DH (and I) is a outdoor gear snob, but he is very impressed with it. It has some great features, and is waterproof, breathable and covered in reflecty bits. Is padded and fleece lined, with room for an extra fleece if it is really cold. Looks v well made too.

www.hm.com/gb/product/92287?article=92287-A this one.

I have an online order in, but won't deliver until end of Oct,so was very pleased when I found one in the shops (Leeds White Rose). Also got matching salopettes, am expecting snow.

this one

Lands end, Spotty Otter and Gap all do down jackets for kids. I just bought a warmest jacket for ds1 (7) from Gap and it's very toasty. He's skinny and gets v cold. But down not great in the wet, although great in snow. Ds2 has a togz warm and dry coat which is padded, fleece lined and waterproof. Very well made. I think Didricksons also do some decent kids coats but H&M is pretty good for the money.

moonstorm · 06/10/2011 22:40

Thanks! We had the GAP jacket last year, which was great - except in the wet - I got a waterproof thin thing to go over it, but it was very cumbersome. It got 'lost', though...

Will try to get to H&M to have a look. And will look into the Togz.

Thanks!

DS has a winter coat from Trespass. They had 50% off a while ago.

While my dc's are small (almost 5 and 3) I'm going to stick with the Millets / Blacks and Trespass stuff for cold, wet weather. The fashion-y brands aren't heavy duty enough IMO.

This is something we have found it is worth paying for. DD has a regatta one at the moment, one where there is a waterproof layer and a fleece layer

TipOfTheSlung · 06/10/2011 22:49

DD has this one Girls Valentine Breathable Jacket and Chorus III Fleece for 3-in-1 on here and it's loads cheaper this year

gruber · 06/10/2011 22:51

The Boden fleece lined coat is quite chunky and also fairly waterproof- we are outside lots and so far it's on it's 3rd winter! Washes well and, if you put them in a fleece underneath as well, absolutely toasty.

gruber · 06/10/2011 22:54

here

Fizzylemonade · 07/10/2011 07:00

I get a 3 in one coat, usually a regatta. It is a fully waterproof coat and has a zip in fleece. That way in spring when it is warmer you can take the fleece out and just use the waterproof if it is raining.

We are outdoorsy types so we would team it up with waterproof over-trousers and wellies - they have neoprene lined ones from warmwellies.co.uk.

They also had ski jackets last year for the snow

accessorizequeen · 07/10/2011 11:11

I have a regatta 3 in 1 for ds1, but he has it on today! There's no way it's warm enough for December! Or is it because I'm up north? He had a Boden puffer jacket for last 2 years and it was warm enough but I didn't like fabric or colours this year.
Someone did recommend H&Ms thin fleeces to layer underneath any jacket and they're vv good for £6!
Hope I won't regret getting a gap down coat, but at least I bought at 30% off!

thisisyesterday · 07/10/2011 11:13

the Gap "warmest" coat is really, very warm. not sure if they've done it this year... will go and look!

thisisyesterday · 07/10/2011 11:14

yeah here

mistlethrush · 07/10/2011 11:16

At 1 and 4 we had a thin waterproof all-in-one and put as many layers underneath as required - at 1 we had a fleece all-in-one that went underneath. As DS has a tendency to get too hot, layers is definitely the way to go - last Christmas I was getting Hmm looks at my son walking down the road in a Tshirt - until they saw me with the coat, fleece and jumper Grin

zipzap · 07/10/2011 12:14

Tk maxx has a good selection of coats, jackets and ski stuff including lots of the makes mentioned here and at a good discount. I got ds1 a great ski jacket for less than £30 instead of £70 and it's big enough to last until next year plus ds2 will be able to wear it later.

Ds2 is getting a nice cosy anorak from sainsburys - his last one also came from there and lasted a couple of years. They're lovely, have nicely padded linings with fleece inside to feel snuggly. Hoods that popper around the chin so they really stay on their heads, knitted cuffs to keep draughts out of their arms and the back is a bit longer so they can sit down and keep their bum dry. for when it is bitterly cold I add an extra layer, usually a sainsburys fleecy thing that is like sweatshirt fabric on the outside and a furry fleece on the inside. Very snuggly and cosy, we also found they were a very useful layer to have in the winter when going somewhere like the supermarket where you were going out but weren't really going to be outside and would then be too hot in a coat in the supermarket or shopping centre. They don't have them in ds1's size anymore so nowneed to find something similar for him this year!

moonstorm · 08/10/2011 20:15

Thank you.

We also have snow suits/ thermals and layering stuff, but sometimes you just need one good coat to put on (in a hurry/ tantrums etc.).

They are forecasting minus temperatures in a few weeks!!!

DS had last year's version of the H&M one that BikeRunSki linked to and although warm and waterproof, it drove both of us mad as the poppered hood came off every time he put it on. I am looking for something with a zipped hood this year, if possible.

I have bought this for ds & am very impressed with it

kbaby · 08/10/2011 23:15

I was going to buy dd a warm skiing jacket for the really cold weather and normal coat for school etc, however in the end I went for the dirkinson camden jacket. It seems warm but not heavy or bulky and its waterproof too.

Ixia · 08/10/2011 23:22

I always buy the Boden fleece lined coat for DD. But I don't really think it classes as a v. warm coat, DD doesn't feel the cold and never stops moving, so she would be too warm in anything else. It does have a good big hood, but the velcro on the pockets does my head in, as her gloves stick to it.

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2011 16:30

Mirth we have had no problems with the hood.
