Warmest child's coat??

moonstorm · 06/10/2011 21:36

I need coats for both dses (1 and 4), preferably waterproof. But they need to be WARM (we like to be outside lots). Can anyone suggest anything? I often think they are not warm enough when I see them in the shops...

Thanks!

BikeRunSki maybe we just had a duff one then. It was a really good coat apart from that.

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2011 17:08

Ours has little "pockets" at the top of the zip to anchor the hood. My friend has just bought her 3 DC the same coat for the 3rd year running. I can see the youngest wearing one of them all his life and his siblings grown out of them. She always gets the same colour too, closets to school uniform colour.

drowninginlaundry · 09/10/2011 19:51

TheHouseofMirth and everyone buying children's jackets - the popper fastening in the hood is a safety feature. Every decent child's jacket should have one. This is because if the hood gets caught somewhere it will come off.

The H&M jacked linked is water resistant, not waterproof. Ditto GAP down jackets, they are absolutely very warm but not waterproof.

Ixia your DD, unless he is a cyborg, will feel the cold in the same way that you do. If she is very active, even more reason to buy a warm coat that breathes, as a child that gets hot and sweaty in the cold weather will get frozen cold when s/he stops moving (except if you kit her in wool base layers, wet wool still stays warm!)

My 3 all have the Didrikson Camden, it ticks all the boxes here Smile

ilovemydogandMrObama · 09/10/2011 19:55

this one is fab

tassisssss · 09/10/2011 19:58

I had hoped that the fleece lined Boden number would cut if for dd (5) but i'm really not convinced. After standing in the playground for 10 mins in sleet-like pouring rain on Thurs it was pretty wet through.

I'm eyeing up the H and M purple one for £30 here

Little sister has a hand on version of this from H and M and it's been fab, I think it'll be on its 5th winter this year and going strong!

BikeRunSki · 09/10/2011 20:44

That's the one we have Tasssisss. It is indeed warer resistant, not water proof, officially, but this coudl just mean that H&M have not paid for higher level testing (DH used to work in outdoor kit industry). My friend has been buying her DC's these jackets for years, and they have never let her down.

serin · 09/10/2011 21:17

Skiwear4Less is fabulous. Serious cold weather coats on there with snow skirts.

DS's have the Boden fleece lined anoraks but TBH I find them much too lightweight for the winter months when they can be outside all day.

moonstorm · 09/10/2011 21:32

I still haven't ordered! Everytime I decide, I change my mind!!!! Confused

Shamelessly hijacking here but to anyone who has a Regatta 3 in 1 - is it warm enough for the winter? I bought one for DS in the spring so have only worn it as a waterproof so far. Just wondering if it will be warm enough in the winter or if I'll need to get him something else? (was really hoping not to have to!).

Marne · 09/10/2011 22:11

Dd1 has a North Face Jacket which is really warm, we picked it up 2nd hand and sadly the hood was missing but if it had the hood it would be the perfect winter coat. I expect they cost a fortune new though. I'm on the look out for something similar with a hood as dd1 is already feeling the cold (and its still warm here in the south).

Both dd's also had the boden fleece lined jacket last year but they were not water proof (perfect for autum or spring but not winter).

Marne · 09/10/2011 22:12

this is what dd1 has but in pink (maybe it doesn't come with a hood?)

accessorizequeen · 09/10/2011 23:02

I have a regatta 3 in 1 and don't think it's warm enough for whole of winter but I am in Yorkshire. Other posters have said they think it's enough. Don't they do a padded 3 in 1, suspect that would be warm enough? I got a gap down one as well. Big plus for me was the grown on hood as ds1 constantly had his yanked off last year by bullies at school.
Would like Didrikson Camden a lot more if it wasn't black for boys btw, it's v nice otherwise. Although too £££ for me! OP what are you hovering between? I do this every year! I'm worse about their coats than my entire wardrobe.

moonstorm · 10/10/2011 18:52

Right (just in case anyone's interested Smile)

I got the H&M jacket for ds2 (1) with one of the fleeces to go inside and this for ds2 (4) as it said waterproof and windproof and I like the figure of withstanding a windchill of -15. I also got ds1 some neoprene wellies from warm wellies.co.uk. Oh and a fleece from HandM to go underneath.

Winter - bring it on! Grin (after they've all arrived and ok'd anyway!)

OP posts:
moonstorm · 10/10/2011 18:56

Ds1's will go to ds2 later (as the GAP one would have if it hadn't 'disappeared'...), so I don't mind spending more for him. If the H&M comes and is nicer than the Raindrops one, I will get one for ds1 as well.

So we have:

Hats/ balaclavas/ snowsuits/ fleece all in ones/ waterpfoof padded gloves/ warm wellies/ wintercoats/ merino wool underwear. We can get thorougly wet and filthy and go out again!

I've bought from:

www.muddypuddles.co.uk
www.raindrops.co.uk
www.handm???
www.warmwellies.co.uk

very thorough roundup there moonstorm! Grin hope you're satisfied with the purchases when they come. Was seriously considering merino underthings for the dc this year, did you get those from muddy puddles? Do you just have one per child and don't wash them v.often? I can't afford more than one each now I've spent so much on coats Blush

moonstorm · 10/10/2011 23:52

I'll check the make tomorrow for you (need to sleep now!), I bought them in Norway (have family there), but I think they are similar to the ones from Muddy Puddles and Raindrops. Last year we had two sets (top and bottoms). He wore the top over his vest, but under the other tops and we washed every few days (they washed and dried really well). Ds wore the leggings (footless) under his trousers, then took his trousers off when indoors (like his Norwegian cousins do) leaving the leggings on.

This year I have bought some additional pairs, but I think they will last a few years - they are quite stretchy, but also fit ds2 ok (a la Nora Batty). They seems to be wearing very well. The don't seem to need washing too often - I air them out between washes.

hth Grin

thanks moonstorm. I have 4 dc so might have to make do with merino tops for them all this year as the sets are so expensive from Raindrops. At least Muddy Puddles do deals now and again. Might have a look in TKMaxx, they had some wool thermals last year. Buying snowboots for them all this year, my budget will struggle with that alone!

TheHouseofMirth · 11/10/2011 14:25

On the subject of snow boots, a friend was telling me that Lidl will be selling them from 17th October for about a tenner.

moonstorm · 11/10/2011 20:33

It's these, but only in Norway and Sweden:
www.pierre-robert.com/eway/default.aspx?pid=278&trg=Main_6266&Main_6254=6266:0:10,2291:1:0:0:::0:0&Main_6266=6281:0:10,2301:1:0:0:::0:0

I don't know where else might be a better price. TKMaxx and Lidl a good idea. The merino underwear for us was a gift, so we are very lucky. Hope you manage to find something.

The wellies I found are supposed to be thermal and were £15, so worth a look if you don't get any in Lidl. (Still a lot of money x4).

On the other hand, I've heard good things about heat holders, so they could also be an option.

have you looked at H&M? the kids winter clothes are ace, I have kitted out my three on and off there for years. My kids were in H&M jackets when we were skiing and tobogganing in -25C last winter at home in Finland . As good as anything you'd get from specialist shops, although not so well built that you can pass them on to siblings though year after year. Most of the base layers and balaclavas we have bought from Finland (either supermarkets, or local brands Reima or Kivat). It's worth investing in wool or wool mix base layers, they stretch so well that you should get three years out of a good pair.

accessorizequeen · 12/10/2011 20:28

Thanks moonstorm and drowning, I shall have to look round and see what I can find. Should have done 2 dc in Jan and 2 now to spread the cost. I think H&M jackets are fab, but they weren't in store when I needed to buy.

kbaby · 12/10/2011 21:59

Have you thought about getting thermal underwear as opposed to wool, you can get cheap thermals in Asda.

Dh thinks I am barking as this year for dc I've bought skiing jackets, one from dirkinson for dd and a h+m one for Ds, waterproof over trousers, snow boots, ski gloves, I just need to get neck warmers now and I would like a set of nice thermals and fleeces
