Anyone Else Think Avon is Rubbish?

YoungMotherTubby · 12/09/2011 23:43

My neighbour's daughter recently started selling Avon and every 3 weeks or so I've browsed and bought something - usually trying to stick to things I reckon I'll use. She's a nice girl and obviously trying to make a bit of money. But is it just me or is Avon stuff just rubbish??
Worst things I've bought
Curl enhancing mousse - it's actually like mousse I used to use in the 80s/90s - once it was near the end of the can and didn't froth up any more and it left my hair looking frizzy
Creamy eyeshadow - within minutes it has smeared into nothing
Shower gel - more suitable to pre-teenage girl and not the usual type of moisturising luxury gel that I can get for same price in supermarket
Lipsticks - always have the feel that they've been left in the heat and started to melt
Cream blusher - was supposed to be pink and could be used on eyes, lips and cheeks - the actual colour is lilac.

Anyone else find the same? appreciate I've not been wanting to splash lots of cash but seriously unimpressed and wouldn't buy the really expensive stuff

The only thing I ever bought from Avon was a perfume. I smelled it on someone on the Tube and I liked it enough to ask her what it was. I can't remember its name now.

chocolaterainbow · 12/09/2011 23:54

Meh, I've some perfume from there this one it smells lovely, very sweet (but not too sickly) but it doesn't last long enough... for the price, s'okay. I got some mineral powder foundation from them once (same story, neighbour's daughter lol) wasn't very impressed, I mean coverage was okay, but coulour - no.

Buying make up (which really, you need to test) from a catalouge doesn't seem to make sence really does it...

piellabakewell · 13/09/2011 00:24

I'm a rep so most of my make up and toiletries are Avon, and I wouldn't sell it if I wouldn't use it myself. You can get a refund on any Avon products you are unhappy with...try taking your used foundation back to Superdrug and see what response you get!

KimberlyClark · 13/09/2011 00:28

avon is lush i love it

especially glimmersticks eyeliners

eyshadow palettes also vg, nail stuff also good

mineral makeup fine

soaps/showergels/sunscreen etc good for multibuy

and anew wrinkle stuff v v g

so there

Megatron · 13/09/2011 06:30

i don't think there's anything wrong with it, certainly not for the price.

The only thing I would buy from your list is prob lipstick and I have a couple that are lovely. Powder eyeshadow is great too. I also bought a foundation recently and I wasn't keen on the shade so the rep took it back no problem. I like Avon, much better than Virgin Vie which I find overpriced tat.

CaptainMartinCrieff · 13/09/2011 06:33

They're eyeliners (glimmersticks, supershock) are excellent.

CaptainMartinCrieff · 13/09/2011 06:33

'Their' not they're Blush

shineonyoucrazypustule · 13/09/2011 06:40

Glimmersticks are very very good.
Magix primer is excellent
Nail polishes are good - good colour pigmentation and not chippy.

applecrumbleandcream · 13/09/2011 07:14

I love Avon glimmersticks eyebrow pencils and stock up on them when they have an offer on, at the moment they are £3.00 each and they are just as good as Clinique ones at £21 each.

I also love the herve leger perfume and have had lots of compliments whilst wearing it.

Also buy lots of bits and bobs for dd as christmas stocking fillers.

YoungMotherTubby · 13/09/2011 08:07

Well you've given me the urge to try the glimmersticks! Looks like no one has bought the things I've bought?

If you see a box of used once Avon products on Ebay - that'll be me!!

I don't buy Avon products because I'm not sure of their animal testing policy. They claim to be 'not tested on animals' but are not on PETA's 'don't test on animals' list which I usually trust.

southeastastra · 13/09/2011 08:41

i used the anew serum and it didn't do anything Grin cost £££ too

LaDolcheRyvita · 13/09/2011 09:19

I used to buy a bit from one of the mums at school who was supplementing her income.

Problem is, you can't test before buying so, a bargain lippy isn't really, cause you wear it 2 or 3 times and then it goes in a drawer and never sees daylight again. Also, everything took FOREVER to arrive. I don't want to wait 5 or 6 weeks for an eye cream or some body lotion.

So, I stopped getting it.

snoozingbeauty · 13/09/2011 09:38

I tried the Anew serum as well as wasn?t that impressed. It?s not as good as No7 and it?s DEFINITELY not as good as this which I?m on my second bottle of: www.mamamio.com/uk/face-care/love-your-life-lines.html, and it lasts twice as long as Avon, which I don?t think is that great value although it seems cheap.

GetOrfMoiSamsungFridgeFreezer · 13/09/2011 09:49

I had a catalogue come through the door and had a look - it seems to be the same old dodgy eyeshadow duos and talc sets as they used to sell years ago.

It's really not appealing and just seems so outdated.

Plus I think as a sales model it's a bit old hat now. Why buy from a door to ddor sales catalogue business, when you can buy far better stuff online. Or you can buy cheap and cheerful make up at the supermarket (Tesco Make Up is brilliant for the price). I just don't see the point in the old fashioned method of ordering via catalogue, wait for it to be sent to the distributor, have the distributor come round and deliver it to you. If You really like Avon stuff, wouldn't you just order it online anyway?

noddyholder · 13/09/2011 10:32

anew 40+ is brillaint

QueenOfAllBiscuitsandMuffins · 13/09/2011 13:16

My wedding and engagement ring are from Avon, love it. Great for cheap body moisterisers and I thought the mineral powder foundation was excellent. Yes they sell a lot of tat but there is some good stuff in there as well and as previous poster said if u don't like the stuff they will refund.

worzelswife · 13/09/2011 13:23

I got some of the room sprays and some shower gel.
Hated them all, totally rubbish. They all smell vile - really chemically and plastic smelling, iyswim. I didn't ask for a refund because I felt bad for the woman selling it, she was so grateful I'd bought it in the first place.
But I wouldn't buy anything from them again. The products just seemed cheap and nasty. It was a surprise as they do have such a good reputation.

AWimbaWay · 13/09/2011 13:24

Avon skin so soft - best mosquito and midge repellent EVER.

Ooopsadaisy · 13/09/2011 13:34

Footworks products are brilliant (the only stuff that saves me from shameful feet that should not be seen).

Super-enchant mascara is fab.

Matte nail varnish is great too - no more 1980s shiney for me!

Sleeptherapy is a god-send.

My only complaint is the lingerie. If you are less than a 34 back, forget it.

Actually that complaint applies to most places - where are the 28s people????

HazeltheMcWitch · 13/09/2011 13:37

The only thing I'd buy from Avon is the Skin So Soft range - which really truly does help to repel midgies! 'Tis the only thingI've found that works for the Scottish Highlands - other than being doused head-to-toe in DEET.

HazeltheMcWitch · 13/09/2011 13:38

Ah, started to post that and then had to go break up WW3 chez McWitch - hence cross-post with AWimbaWay - nice name, btw!

Honeydragon · 13/09/2011 13:54

I am a Avon rep, truth be told I am not terribly fond of some of their foundations.

The advantages of the foundations and other bits are that you can return within 30 days and so avoid expensive mistakes, and plenty people do Smile

The glimmersticks are brilliant. The Magix X is very good as are some Mascaras. They also do

this which I have been very impressed with, especially for the price, as its always on offer.

And their fit flops are the mutts nutts, very very good

CaptainNancy · 13/09/2011 14:00

One of the mums at school used to give me the catalogue regularly, but tbh it all looked v tacky, so I never ordered anything from her (that's putting aside the whole issue of a peer expecting me to supplement her lifestyle choices ).

I don't buy cosmetics very frequently, but I tend to buy high-end brand names, and the products all looked as subtle as a 13yo's make-up.

Honeydragon · 13/09/2011 14:05

Grin

(When I do anything for my mums I do it at cost....we're all skint and every little helps)
