Anyone Else Think Avon is Rubbish?

YoungMotherTubby · 12/09/2011 23:43

My neighbour's daughter recently started selling Avon and every 3 weeks or so I've browsed and bought something - usually trying to stick to things I reckon I'll use. She's a nice girl and obviously trying to make a bit of money. But is it just me or is Avon stuff just rubbish??
Worst things I've bought
Curl enhancing mousse - it's actually like mousse I used to use in the 80s/90s - once it was near the end of the can and didn't froth up any more and it left my hair looking frizzy
Creamy eyeshadow - within minutes it has smeared into nothing
Shower gel - more suitable to pre-teenage girl and not the usual type of moisturising luxury gel that I can get for same price in supermarket
Lipsticks - always have the feel that they've been left in the heat and started to melt
Cream blusher - was supposed to be pink and could be used on eyes, lips and cheeks - the actual colour is lilac.

Anyone else find the same? appreciate I've not been wanting to splash lots of cash but seriously unimpressed and wouldn't buy the really expensive stuff

Grin That's lovely of you to do so honeydragon, but that definitely wasn't the deal in this case.

applecrumbleandcream · 13/09/2011 14:28

Not everyone can afford high end cosmetics and body lotions and potions, so Avon is great for people on a limited budget as the prices are so good. Personally, I enjoy a quick flick through the Avon catalogue, there's no pressure to buy like at cosmetic counters and some of the products are really great. Plus why not help another person moneywise by ordering from them. Most people are struggling at the moment!!

CaptainNancy · 13/09/2011 15:27

true applecrumble- but you could just as easily browse the shelves in Boots or Superdrug such as rimmel, bourjois, No17 etc for reasonably priced cosmetics, and take advantage of their offers (points, 3for2, etc)etc too.

Birdsgottafly · 13/09/2011 15:56

Their foot range is really good and works out cheap when it is on offer, 3 for £5 etc. My DD's like their bubblebath.
I have found that their 40+ range suits me and is alot cheaper than what i used to use. I also buy their shea butter hand cream.

I don't like their make up, i only buy the nail varnish when i don't need it to last long, they do some lovely colours.
The multi/trial size packs are worth getting to try out products.

vonnyh · 13/09/2011 15:59

Their Extend mascara is really, really good. And another vote for glimmersticks.

babycham42 · 13/09/2011 16:12

It"s so convenient - I find trying to spend ages choosing make up etc when I"m out is doomed to failure as I always have kids in tow! This way I can look,in an un-stressed manner, and really enjoy the shopping experience! I can also hide when Avon rep appears so DH ends up paying Grin

I love Soft Musk perfume, the cheap face powders are fine as are the nail varnishes. You can get lovely bits on offer for presents. I can"t afford anything more expensive(you don"t miss what you"ve never had!) so I love my Avon!!!!

piellabakewell · 14/09/2011 19:07

If you want to try a lipstick, foundation, anti-ageing product or perfume you can get free samples of most from your rep.

FootballFriend · 14/09/2011 21:09

"It"s so convenient [...] I can look,in an un-stressed manner, and really enjoy the shopping experience!" The Boden of the cosmetics world :)

Some stuff is better than others. Jewellery is pretty good. Doesn't tarnish, turn your skin green, etc. Underwear etc is good value - always used to be made at the same factories that made for that well store which is made up of two names.

halcyondays · 14/09/2011 21:17

I really like their Footworks stuff, have tried quite a lot of foot creams and scrubs and been pleased with them. Also like Planet Spa face masks. Don't think I've tried any of their make up so can't comment on that.

Thecatsmum · 15/09/2011 07:35

I don't think the makeup is very good anymore, lipsticks are very drying, powder eyeshadows don't last, plus a watch I bought fell to pieces and a bra I bought was really scratchy material. I just buy special offer bath stuff to donate to tombola's (get a lot of requests for tombola donations!)
I used to wear a lot of Avon but like everything else these days the quality has gone downhill.

MordechaiVanunu · 15/09/2011 07:47

I live the Magix primer.

WhoseGotMyEyebrows · 15/09/2011 12:11

I have a nail varnish and I love it, it's my favourite. Tried shower jels and body moisturisers though and thought there were awful. Left my skin itchy, not moisturising at all and I suspect full of crap.

I've bought several Avon products in the pasts. Four shade eyeshadow palette, nail polishes, lip glosses and many others.
The shower gels have been bought in our household for a while as these are the only products Avon sell that I'm relatively happy with.

The eyeshades I've bought in the past are pretty terrible, the nail polishes dry fairly quickly however after an hour or two the polish just peals off. Eyeshadows I've bought have no pigment and the shadow has so much fallout it's unreal. Lip glosses are so so when first used however after a while the colour seperates in the bottle and is no longer usable as it the taste is foul and all that ends up being applied is a slightly coloured clear gloss.

Some of the items I've bought have normally been in the sale/on offer, I've never bothered asking for a refund because the price was so little it's not worth bothering with. I have returned stuff however I normally feel guilty for doing so.

All I've learnt is that rather than wasting money on products that don't meet good enough standards, to save up and just buy what I know is good, M.A.C. And other high street brands.

noddyholder · 16/06/2012 12:55

The premium skincare called anew is really good. Never tried the other stuff

EllenParsons · 16/06/2012 13:08

The only thing I've ever had from there was a foot cream which was quite nice. I wouldn't fancy getting makeup from there though.

psammyad · 16/06/2012 13:14

Footworks & Skin So Soft spray (for the mozzies) are great!
I used to get these through someone at work, my problem was I really just don't use very much of any product (except face & body moisturiser which I use tonnes of, but don't get from Avon) so I would really only need to buy every couple of years. Usually a magazine freebie will last me until the next year's promo!

Was always worth a browse of the sale jewellery & accessories for stocking filler gifts though.

Krumbum · 16/06/2012 13:24

They have some really nice mascaras but they arnt even that cheap anymore. I'd rather go with elf anytime, much better and cheaper.

valiumredhead · 16/06/2012 13:26

Glimmer sticks are fabulous as is the mineral foundation.

TodaysAGoodDay · 16/06/2012 13:30

The only thing I like is 'Skin So Soft'. It's a fantastic insect repellent, much cheaper than Jungle Formula, although I don't think that's what Avon intended Grin. The perfumes are truly disgusting, but then I'm quite fussy about fragrances.

ooer · 16/06/2012 17:30

YY Skin So Soft as midge repellent
YY Glimmersticks
Bubblebath for DCs
I got lucky with their foundation
Got nice leggings from there too.
I love their powder eyeshadows but don't wear eyeshadow enough to make it worthwhile.

But - our rep at work has given it up and I am Avonless now.

Birdies · 16/06/2012 18:00

The eye cream is very good, not sure what it's called. It's the one where half the pot is a cream for under eye, half a gel for above. Doesn't sting and feels really soothing/moisturising

hermioneweasley · 16/06/2012 18:08

Agree glimmer sticks, foot range and magix skin primer are all brilliant.

Anyone else think their version of fit flops are good? I have recently been converted, but at £50 a pop, they are excruciatingly expensive!

nailak · 16/06/2012 18:23

I buy from Avon every time. I like the lipsticks, glimmersticks, kajol sticks, the compact foundation, magicx, face creams and body lotion, problem skin blemish remover roll on thing, love the bubble baths, face wash, sometimes jewellery, nice bags, I live in their fitflops, kids stuff is good, like giant snakes and ladders gloves umbrellas etc.

I can't browse boots or supermarkets without kids grabbing everything.

Can't buy on line, no credit card, and harder to return etc, so I don't think it is outdated.
