Any winters here?

I've been following the other season threads and found them really useful. It would be great if any other winters want to share tips, links and advice :)

I think I'm a deep winter. I'm going to get my colours done in November before returning to work, until then I'm saying deep winter as that's what my wardrobe looks like! :o

Really want to know what colours to avoid but worried I will have to scrap all my favourite clothes as a result!

I think with that site you have to just look at the palettes as the descriptions of hair/ eyes don't always fit. You can have brown eyed clear springs for example. It has more to do with skin tone. You seem to recognise some warmth to your colouring- hence the clear Spring recommendation. Clear Springs can have high contrast, that is really dark hair and pale skin- a feature most associated with winters, however if white drains you yet black does you justice this is the only palette that fits. Salmon pink doesn't look great on Clear Springs as it is too warm so you can't do the Fuchsia/ salmon pink test and determine it. HTH.

FoofFighters · 24/08/2011 09:00

Hmm that's interesting catswipe.. pure white is the only colour I'm not sure of. I wear white t shirts and shirts all the time but couldn't wear a pure white wedding dress! Hmm

It's definitely worth considering. On the original seasonal colour analysis charts Springs were always defined as blonde and even some of the interseasonal ones labour under this misconception. A Clear Spring is right on the cusp of being a Winter but has more warmth and so it tips the balance. Like I said the white test is a good indicator. There is also this misconception that you have to suit browns and olives to be warm. Not if you are clear and warm! We are talking sharp jewel colours with warmth added. Black and Navy also looking great etc. Nothing really pastel or icy. Because it is on the cusp a lot of cool colours work well as long as they are richly saturated. True Red and turquoise really pop on a clear spring.

catswipe · 24/08/2011 12:54

Ivory is the neutral that suits Clear Spring as opposed to white.

Twit · 24/08/2011 14:30

Fooffighters you have just described me, although I have never thought I suited pale colours, perhaps I'm too pale IYSWIM? Although maybe my hair isn't as warm brown as it was (except I have it coloured back to warm brown).
Confused
I think the 'dirty' versions of colours are better for me, if that makes any sense. Pure blue is odd whereas dirty navy blue is fine. Maybe (I'm doubting myself now)
I found burnt orange is ok too. I think. Grin I never ever thought I'd wear orange but it seems ok.

nicole333 · 24/08/2011 17:25

Well done girls!! Remember though, the salmon v fuschia is to determine whether you suit warm or cool. I am a Deep, cool and clear. I suit darker denim (deep) and the cooler pallettes (blue undertones). The clear bit is the consultants being extra good at their job!

You could try the latest CMB book. The one with the lady wearing a green dress on the front. This is how I started, but it all got a bit much and I ended up paying for a consultation.

Right, clothes!!! Today in M&S I saw two things, that if you are the same as me, or lets keep it simple...a winter that suits cooler tones. You know those great little fine knit v neck sweaters they do each year that are only about 12 or 14 quid? If you dont, you're missing out! Well, they had one in deep fuschia and one in a bright, clear turquoise. Perfect!

Also, in Monsoon/accessories the nice soft, wide, plain colour scarves that are about 19 quid? They had a gorgeous bright purple. Lush!

I will try and do links now..

www.marksandspencer.com/V-Neck-Long-Sleeve-Plain-Jumper/dp/B003RLUR1G?ie=UTF8&ref=sr_1_12&nodeId=42967030&sr=1-12&qid=1314202821&pf_rd_r=0ZVQTVMTM6YJF2VH9EYV&pf_rd_m=A2BO0OYVBKIQJM&pf_rd_t=301&pf_rd_i=0&pf_rd_p=215485807&pf_rd_s=center-3

I don't know why they pulled it down on the model. Looks awful in this photo and nice in real life! You can see the turquoise one here too.

This pic makes it look a bit dark. It was a more uplifting colour in the flesh.

goinnowhere · 24/08/2011 18:26

Right, I am well and truly confused now! On the plus side, DH has had a good laugh at me draping, covering head, and taking self portraits at the window Grin. I have darkest brown hair, hazel eyes which are I suppose almost ambery, with greeny centre, can be a bit muddy perhaps. I can never tell what my skin tone is, but I've always thought a bit sallow.
Anyway, did the draping. I think the pictures actually make me look better in the salmon, but when I wear fuschia in RL I get compliments every time. My wedding dress was white, because it definitely looked better. Any suggestions.? Iv'e tried the chicfashionista site, but still find it hard. Thanks! btw what do you cover your head in?

nicole333 · 24/08/2011 18:48

I wouldn't say taking pics would be the best thing. You need to be sitting in front of a mirror in pure natural light. The natural light is the most important thing to get the effect that the two different tones have.

I'll get my book out and see what else I can suggest...

nicole333 · 24/08/2011 19:00

Oh no! I just remembered I packed it away! Ok, maybe take a trip down to your local waterstones and have a look. Or have a look on the CMB website to see if there is anymore advice on trying to work it out.

goinnowhere · 24/08/2011 20:04

Thanks nicole. Think you might be right, and the quality of the picture taking may be at fault. I'll get my mum to watch the draping. She loves to tell me when I'm not looking my best. Grin

flippineck · 24/08/2011 20:34

Nicole, those M&S jumpers look quite good. How 'deep' is the turquoise? Hard to tell on screen. The ink also loooks promising.

I'm finding it hard to think about colours now, just feeling fat! 38.5 weeks pregnant (DC3) so going to be a while before I do any shopping...well, anything, let's face it...for me! I might try and get my hair cut before the new arrival, that's a start, right?!

flippineck · 24/08/2011 20:36

Oh, and has anyone else found themselves looking at the rest of their family trying to work out their colours?! Sat staring at my daughters today trying to class them - think one is a spring (definitely like her dad) and the other might be an autumn but much less certain!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 24/08/2011 21:14

Well, I've had another look and am deffo not a Spring. Am going to try and do some colour draping tomorrow, as I just haven't had time in the last couple of days. Wish me luck! :)

nicole333 · 24/08/2011 21:36

With knit wear you need to be careful, as the nature of the fabric can wash the trueness/strength out of the colour. Those jumpers are fine though. The turquoise is bright and has some depth to it, I like it. You're right about the ink one too.

I'm currently looking for a trench coat in a nice true navy as it's one of my neutrals. I've also got a really nice strong pink scarf from Hobbs that will go nice with it when i eventually get it.

A little note regarding brown...we can still wear it, but think cool and deep for us coolens, like bitter chocolate and you should see that it's ok. Oh pink and brown, i love it!!!

Aha! I have looked at recoveringgoth (useful!). I think my "salmon" draping fabric may have been too strong in colour! Think I'm a deep winter, but really could do with knowing my eye colour! Dark hazel? Bright hazel? Topaz?

FoofFighters · 24/08/2011 23:11

I need a professional intervention. Every time I think I've got it nailed I change my mind the next day. I looked amazing in black with no make-up yesterday, and grim today with make-up on. I suspect my foundation and eye make-up is too yellow for me Hmm

Oh yes flippineck I am now categorising everyone I see :o

OP posts:
Bunbaker · 25/08/2011 08:30

It sounds like your make-up is wrong. You are supposed to try colours without a scrap of make-up on so that you get the right skin tone.

Twit · 25/08/2011 08:56

Fooffighters I think I might be an autumn now. But a mix of warm and deep Autumn because of my blue eyes with gold, my fair, freckly possibly ivory skin BUT v dark brown hair (with reddish undertones). Looking at your link I am similar to Debra Messing for skin and eyes with Angelina Jolie's hair.
The description of you that you posted down thread was me, do you have slightly creamy coloured skin rather than pinky? That wsa what helped me - along with the gold in my eyes. mine are like the top two and bottom two

Thehusbandsatcricketagain · 25/08/2011 09:16

aaaahhhhh twit have just been terrorised by the eyes staring at me

& what the hell has been started here, there must be lots of dh/dp/dc all around the country wetting themselves from watching us flapping at what season we are Confused

I actually bought 2 very exciting tops yesterday, black high necked basic tees as I know they look simple but stylish on me Hmm & my black wool dress from boden arrived (needed for all the job iterviews I am going to be shortlisted for Wink & have to say I would never have put the shift dress, slash neck style on me but had to keep looking in the mirror as I looked like a proper polished grown up instead of a thrown together mess who wears all the wrong colours.........

Twit · 25/08/2011 09:21
Grin sorry about that - ooh you look like a real grown up now, very polished. Wink
FoofFighters · 25/08/2011 09:32

Bunbaker I suspect my make-up isn't right. I took pics in daylight with different colours draped and no make-up, and now the colours look different when I wear them with make-up :o

Twit I have a slight tan just now which is confusing me. And now I suspect my hair is not a warm tone. Pictures would help but I need to work out how to upload them. Or maybe we need a Facebook group or photobucket album to upload to and help each other out?

Thehusbands I'm totally doing that too :o

OP posts:
catswipe · 25/08/2011 10:06

Twit you sound like a Clear Spring! Springs often have blue eyes but with warm amber/ brown aspect to them. The way you describe your hair and skin leads me to believe you are on the border between winter and spring. How are you in white?

Twit · 25/08/2011 12:52

Shock ok I think. But I don't wear it. I really need to save up and get done, but what with one thing or another.

jbg · 25/08/2011 20:18

Foo: I suit the strong/bright jewel colours, all greys, black, white, my wow colour is similar to cobalt blue. I'm so happy with these.

Re: lipsticks, still getting used to them, i put loads of lip balm on first to make it less dramatic. Have had a few positive comments!
