What would you ask clothes and shoe designers to STOP bloody designing and trying to flog us?

On my list:

  1. Tops/dresses with necklines which show your bra straps. As most women wear bras and most bra straps aren't designed for public display, this would seem to be a basic design flaw.

  2. Skirts / trousers / jeans with pockets in stupid unflattering places. We don't need the extra bulkage thanks.

  3. Yet ANOTHER bloody gladiator sandal. Just because I hate them.

What would be on your list?

I have that problem too startail.

I'm limited to a life of sleeved jersey wrap dresses it seems.

Bras bigger than a size c that are padded. Why? my boobs are big enough I do not want to look like Barbara Windsor.

Noooo leave padded bras for C+ up alone! Grin I only wear push up padded bras, I love them!

Agree with startail, that gets on my nerves!

startail · 31/07/2011 14:16

Please don't stop jeggings, they are the absolute staple of the DDs wardrobes. Clearly nice denim like ones are far better than the printed things.
Beguine simply should not be worn by any one over 21Smile

startail · 31/07/2011 14:16

BebuineBlush jeggings

Thumbwitch · 31/07/2011 14:30

I hate trousers with no pockets. Drives me mad. Went through one season where it was almost impossible to find any trousers that had pockets (apart from jeans).
I also loathe side fastening trousers with pleaty bits at the front - double the size of your stomach as soon as you sit down, WTF is that about?!

Sandal/boot crosses with 6" heels. They are Vile. If I want boots, I do not want them with peeptoes and cut away bits. Similarly, I do not want ankle-sandals. They are all over the place here in Australia. Ugh.

3/4 length sleeves and as someone else said, those ridiculous wraps that are only about 6" deep - WHAT is the point? Fine for warm weather but in winter? I want proper length stuff please! For warmth!

happywheezer · 31/07/2011 14:30

Maxi dresses that don't clean the floor
I don't mind a good maxi but I was in Bristol yesterday and every single woman that had one on, there were plenty,it was sunny, strapless too, were cleaning the floor.
What do they think we wear with them?
The laugh about it is most were pushing prams and were strapless. I could n't wear one because I'd worry that everytime I bent down or picked my child up that I would be exposing flesh- and nobody wants to see that.

LisMcA · 31/07/2011 14:34

Skirts/shorts for the larger lady that are way too short ( I am a size 18 so can say this). No one wants to see my arse hanging below my hemline thank you!!

TheCrackFox · 31/07/2011 14:35

I'm convinced that this recession is a global conspiracy by marxist fashion designers.

Women have been telling the same thing for decades (no sleeveless dresses, 3/4 length sleeves on winter clothes?,we need pockets on trousers too etc) but they keep making unwearable clothes. These unwearable clothes soon become unsellable and in turn no profit for the shopkeepers.

It is a conspiracy, I tell you.

BulletWithAName · 31/07/2011 14:46

Now, now, let's not get too hasty and do away with all sleeveless and 3/4 sleeve winter dresses or I'd have nothing to wear! I can't bear long sleeve dresses, they irritate me, I would never wear one!

(whispers) in a moment of recklessness yesterday morning I stuck a cashmere jumper inside a duet cover and banged it on at 60. Lo, its come out clean and the same size.

Disclaimer: I'd have cried for weeks if it hadn't, 200 pre-sale,which is a lot for me.

aStarInStrangeways · 31/07/2011 15:03

Shirts/shirt-dresses that are cut so cheaply on the armhole that the whole thing rides up to your bra band the minute you raise your hand above waist level. Yes, H&M, I'm looking at you.

It had been sat in the laundry basket for weeks taunting me so I thought I'd teach it a lesson.

I have a dry clean coat. Wtf? Actually its a MAC rather than a coat...

moffat · 31/07/2011 15:12

Totally agree with many posts. I also can't stand the latest shoe fashions with thick straps across the ankle - so unflattering. Agree that Wallis and Next have zero imagination and quality. And why do so many tops have such gigantic necklines????

BunnyWunny · 31/07/2011 15:14

Unpadded bras are awful- I am d cup and still need padded so my nipples don't show through!

BunnyWunny · 31/07/2011 15:15

Adult style clothes for little girls is my bugbear- why black/grey strappy tops in age 3?

Oh yes moffat, elasticated bandage shoes Hmm

thederkinsdame · 31/07/2011 15:25

No, I don't want to relive my youth. I did the 80s first time round, ta. So I will pass on the skinny jeans and dayglo colours. I second the call for shoes with diffferent heel heights. Why can I only find skyscraper heels or ballet flats at the moment? I will wear neither, which is why converse have done so well out of me this summer.

I also want trousers that stay up, rather than ones witha waistband to match the hips.

I do not want to look like I am wearing my Gran's old curtains - Wallis I am looking at YOU with your dayglo paisley patterns that look like something a nursery have designed.

MyNameIsInigoMontoya · 31/07/2011 15:31

Ooh yes, some things I have been wanting to tell the designers:

DON'TS:

Baby/toddler clothes with pockets, especially trousers with pockets all down the legs - waste of fabric and makes them take forever to dry

Trousers/jeans that give you builder's bum as soon as you sit down

Anything that you can't wear without having just the right thing to wear underneath it, or else looking like a slapper (no I DON'T want a see-through work shirt thank you!).

Stupid cut-outs or slits in the back or down the arms

Anything dry-clean only or "hand wash, dry flat", unless it's something like party clothes you only want to wear once a year

Hugely scooped necks, or massive armholes that show your bra

Those peasant-style tops with the elastic at the bottom, which look awful if you have any sort of tummy!

DO'S:

Proper knickers. Thongs are uncomfy and look awful unless you have a model body, boy shorts just make your bum look huge. Proper knickers are 10 times comfier and more flattering! Please pretty please?

Jumpers/cardis for Winter that look nice and are warm, it can't be that hard can it?

I am sure there are more things I've moaned about before, just can't think of them yet...

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/07/2011 15:31

SevenAgainstThebes - Bloody brilliant post and I agree with almost every word. :)

MayMummy11 · 31/07/2011 15:33

I wish designers WOULD do the following:

I wish clothes sizes also came in 11, 13, 15 etc - I seem to be in between sizes.

Underwear that fits bigger boobs that does not look like granny bolder holders. I know about Bravissimo and the like, it still takes forever to find flattering and pretty underwear that supports well for the large chested lady. I do have bigger boobs but they still deserve to look great and be supported in pretty underwear.

I really dislike high waisted skirts/trousers/, maxi dresses, dresses that are cut out from under your boobs so you look 9 months preggers without even trying, unnecessary zips/bottons/pockets.

Also please could designers at least size things the same way? Not be a 12 in one store and than a 14 in another. It would save a lot of shopping tears....

Where to begin...

Let's start with underwear. I appreciate that some women want padded cups to their bras, but some of us, even though we are a humble B cup (ie me) do not want foam padding in our underwear. Can we have a choice please, at least? The choice of unpadded bras was far better ten years ago, and you could even get unpadded, un-cantilevered, non-rib crushing cotton bras from Calvin Klein. Can we have them back please?

I too share the armhole problem. Side-boob is not a good look an anyone, and unless your arms are huge, it WILL happen in a lot of today's sleeveless tops.

Talking of boobs once more, can we have fabulous evening wear that is not strapless, and has something other than an uncomfortable, cliched corset up top?

Right then, trousers. Most of us are not 5'9", and many of us do not have easy access to seamstresses, or the time or inclination to seek them out. Please stop making trousers excessively long, or at least give us a choice of lengths like men get. We don't all wear huge heels either, so that is not a get-out.

Oh dear, shoes. To sum up, all I want is shoes that stay on. Actually, I want flat, or low, square-heeled shoes that stay on. 90% of flats do not come far enough up the foot to stay on without toe-clenching, which hurts. I don't give a shit about toe cleavage apparently being sexy, I want my shoes not to fall off when I walk, godammit. Either put a strap across the instep (preferable), or make the uppers bigger. Oh, and please make the soles waterproof, at least.
