What can fat people wear when it is hot?

AtYourCervix · 11/06/2011 10:13

Planning ahead to forthcoming holiday at the end of july somewhere nice and hot.

Obviously I can't wear shorts but I have gone right off the 3/4 length linen trews I've been wearing for yonks. I rather like palazzo types but would it not be a bit hot having all my legs covered up?
WHat do you think?

This stuff is brilliant for chafing

Sounds melodramatic, but it changed my life....

thebestisyettocome · 11/06/2011 22:18

What about this?

defineme · 11/06/2011 22:30

That maxi skirt looks nice, but can I say very similar to my Primark one that I have in- black and dark brown-£9 each. I wear them with a vest and sandals-very cool in hot weather. I look shit in maxi dresses-I'm only a size 10-12 on top and it drowns me/emphasises the pear shape. I did notice Next are selling maxi dresses with slimming panels.

I'm 5 10 and a 14, I think the pear shape lends itself to chafing-I got it when I was a size 12 and my BMI is 24 and not overweight now. I just use a bit of vaseline when it's hot and I'm doing lots of walking.

If you must wear 3/4 trousers get the tailored ones that are mean for work and dress them down with flip flops-much mopre flattering than baggy combat style ones-I have navy ones that look fine, but my ankles still don't look great in them.

Linen trousers need to be tailored too-my Great plains ones have a proper waistband-expensive, but much more flattering than drawstring waist ones-really sack like in those.

"but can I say very similar to my Primark one that I have in- black and dark brown-£9 each."

hmm interesting - do they have a structured or elasticated waist?

Living in a hot climate at the moment, size 16, I swear by natural fibres. look for cotton and linen. I will leave it to others to tell you what to wear!
I remember two years ago being in Cannes and seeing a British cruise ship come in and cringing. Lovely ladies were wearing 3/4 length trousers and vest tops ( because they were on their holidays) and looking horrible. Covering up and wearing longer lengths is not hotter.

polyhymnia · 12/06/2011 11:04

thebest, that Boden skirt looked terrible on me and I sent it back. The material is very thin and slippery, like cheap lingerie, and I thought the rollover top very unflattering on a large person. I was really disappointed. But a few reviewers have liked it - if OP fancies giving it a try, the advice is to size down.

porcamiseria · 12/06/2011 11:16

get a nice kaftan

muminthemiddle · 12/06/2011 11:53

How about an A line skirt in cotton or linnen.
Try and wear natural fibres rather than man made. More ironing but much more breathable and so will allow air in/out and not trap perspiration.
Avoid black and go for white and colour. For example white linnen skirt with bright blue and white tunic. If you don't want to expose your underarm then try a top with loose fitting floaty sleeves to the elbow, can't think what they are called but those triangle style sleeves will keep you cooler and look stylish.

ooh, I know this, I know this!!! OP have you tried Gundrun unpronouceable??? Fab stuff for all sizes, in lovely colours. Bit pricey but well made. It appears the website is down at the mo but I promise it is worth the wait!

Poly. Boden is so hit and miss I suppose and when I do order stuff from them I do tend to order a smaller size otherwise it's huge.

polyhymnia · 12/06/2011 18:18

the best, actually have qute a few things I really like from Boden - and they do go up to 22, which is good for me. Just worn a really nice tea dress, with cardi, both from them, to a lunch party today. But their sizes certainly vary quite a lot. Though, as I only buy from them when they're offering free p. and p., easy enough to order 2 sizes and send one back.

At Your Cervix, can't now find the navy stripy top I have from Style 369, but their website is worth a look for tunics, long tops, etc. Not as good quality as Boden, but not as expensive either.

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/06/2011 18:48

I am fat and I wear shorts on the beach. I have denim ones from Evil Evans. I don't think my legs are that bad (unlike my stomach, which would have people retching and covering their children's eyes if I tried to wear a bikini) - they are very muscular and I have no cellulite.

I would go for floaty maxi skirts. Maybe dresses? But not floaty all over otherwise you will look like a marquee that has come adrift. You need reasonably fitted somewhere - so if loose floaty top, then leggings, if you must, or fairly slim fitting trousers/jeans. And if floaty skirt than a more fitted top to pull you together. And a cardigan can be quite slimming and pull you in a bit in a floaty dress (maybe for evening).

Hoick your tits up with a properly fitting bra (this will make you look thinner round the middle too) and show a bit of cleavage - men will focus on this rather than the jelly belly underneath (that's my philosophy, anyway, deluded though I might be).

If you can't wear eye make up, then treat yourself to some fabulous shades and wear some lippy or lipgloss. And get a good haircut. Just because we are heifers, doesn't mean we have to look frumpy or as if we have lost all hope.

arfanarf · 12/06/2011 19:12

Spray deodorant also works to stop chafing.

andthenshewasdone · 12/06/2011 19:34

evans do chafing shorts, sort of a mesh. cool and comfy and easy to wash and dry.

vanillamum · 12/06/2011 20:40

I am a Gudrun Sjoden fan too but because it is such good quality/expensive I buy off ebay because it is made to last.

Also people often list it as Gudren rather than Gudrun so you can get it even cheaper.
Don't let the real Gudrun Sjoden website put you off because I think some of the photos make the clothes look hideous when they are lovely.

The designs also look a lot better on someone with a curves, I don't have much of a bust and have to be pretty selective about what Gudrun stuff I wear yet but my friend who is your size can wear a lot more of the range and look amazing.

welliesundermeballgoon · 12/06/2011 20:56

Nooooo don't wear those horrible shorts, they'll be really uncomfortable and make you feel shit about yourself, get to Body shop and get a spray bottle of their dry oil, et voila no chafing Grin

MrsSchadenfreude · 12/06/2011 22:21

Chafing shorts... mmm that sounds sexy...

I like the look of Gudrun Doodah's stuff but have no idea how the sizing comes up and I find the website mad and impossible to navigate.
