Shorts - do they ever look good?

Its summertime and of course that means shorts.
Every year I try very hard to avoid them - but of course sooner or later there is an occassion when really only shorts will do (especially when you have a 4yr old and 2 yr old)
I'm too old for short denim cut offs, and find cut offs mid thigh or longer very strange. I hate chinos and those baggy beige ones. And I want casual not city chic or glamourous. I'm a size 10/12 and whilst not necessarily toned in fairly good shape all be it a bit of a tum, not too shy about my legs especially once I get a tan. But still can't find anything that looks good.
Am I being too fussy? Should I just not bother? What are the alternatives?

I have something similar to these that I bought last year.

Thanks so much - I love the first Fat Face ones and the ones from Wrap. I think where I've been going wrong in the past is either too big (baggy combat style) or too tight (cut off denim) and these are just simply a smarter cut but still casual.

And for all of you who mentioned skirts - obviously you are all so much more graceful than me! I seem to flash my knickers whenever I combine skirts and small kids

The really cheap casual black jersey type material ones from Primark (£3!!!) are actually the nicest and most flattering shorts I've ever owned! Lovely fit and shape. They sold them several colours but I went for black as all my camisole/strappy tops are white/black or white and black print.

I'm 51 and I wear shorts all the time in the summer. I like the gap ones that roll up - not too baggy, not too long - and i like that they aren't high waisted. they are not the cargo kind - more chino - not baggy at all! but not skin tight either. I definitely think tight is bad as far as shorts go. I wear them with tshirts and soft blazers or a silk cardigan like the NAP photo - sometimes with a wedge, sometimes with flats - depends. They're very like the Vince ones already linked, except not so much on the waist as those.
