How do you manage not to touch your "holiday clothes"

Is it just me that buys things for holidays and has them hanging up for weeks in advance? Ive got three dresses and I could do to wear one of them this weekend but, I cant bring myself to. Why do we buy clothes for holidays?

I remember a few years ago in a hot spell like this one of our builders came round at the weekend on a sunday I think as there was a problem with something and he had white 3/4 trousers which his wife insisted he wear he was mortified and spent most of the time apologising for them !Poor thing

kittya · 21/04/2011 16:04

Oh no, it's a holiday abroad thing for me. I wouldn't bother if it was in this country.

My mother used to buy us new underwear for holidays and some 'holiday clothes' for us, and pack them away. It was more to avoid her having a mad panic the day before because stuff we needed to take was in the laundry pile, and she worked full time. New knickers appeared on summer holidays and at Christmas Grin Stuff is so much cheaper nowadays that we all seem to have a lot more clothes, and I've never had an issue. Stuff like new shorts etc are put away for holidays, but come out early if the weather gets nice.

I do sometimes hide stuff of DH's away 3/4 days before we go away, otherwise he'll wear it until the night before and then say, 'Just pack it, I'll wash it when we get there.' Hmm

EvenLessNarkyPuffin · 21/04/2011 16:15

I have a temperature scale for clothing (for adults). No white trousers until the temperature hits 85.

foundwanting · 21/04/2011 16:16

I love holiday clothes. It is the only week of the year that I have a capsule wardrobe.

I can spend weeks planning to get the most different outfits out of the fewest items of clothing.

My mum takes all her old undies and bins them (rather than wash them or pack them dirty), so always buys new before she goes and has them ready for her return. But she is a bit mad.

bigTillyMint · 21/04/2011 16:21

It depends where I'm going - my hot holiday clothes (some at least 5 years old) might be great in 40 degrees heat, but not so great for a windy and rainy summer!

Meggles76 · 21/04/2011 16:23

Although I don't keep clothes for holidays, I do spend hours planning what I am going to take ... I love it!! I am already planning what to take for our weekend at Centre Parcs at the start of July and our week in France at the end of July

kittya · 21/04/2011 16:30

So, I'm not quite so mad then? It's coming out as being a chidhood thing. I have to say, two of my friends are exactly the same and they are from ooop north too!!

OP posts:
Meggles76 · 21/04/2011 16:36

No, not made Smile. Maybe it is a northern thing?!

Meggles76 · 21/04/2011 16:36

or mad even!!

Pagwatch · 21/04/2011 16:40

No, it's weird.
we did have a big pile of clothes that we were not allowed to touch about three weeks before holiday. But that was because there were ten of us and we didn't have a washing machine. If we got the clean clothes for holiday dirty mum would have gone nutty.

But I just buy stuff during the year and select what I want from the wardrobes about two days before we go.

It is like the barking thing of having clothes that you save for best. Just wear them. If they are your best and therefore your favourite clothes then wear them more, not less

I suppose if I was going on an exotic holiday I might buy a couple of new things to keep back but it's never going to happen! Camper/caravanner here so the older and more comfortable the better. I always time a last wash a couple of days before we go to give me time for drying/ironing. Then shove it all in a blue IKEA bag at the 11th hour.

what is wrong with gold shoes and a sundress ?

Butterbur · 21/04/2011 18:43

We used to get given new PAPER knickers for our holidays, so Mum didn't have to wash them. God they were awful. They rustled when we moved, and everyone could hear, and when you pulled them down for a wee, they always tore.

LynetteScavo · 21/04/2011 18:47

Paper knickers! Genius! Where can I get them? Can you get paper PJ's too? It would make it so much easier to bring home suveniers if you didn't have to bring back knickers and PJ's.

I only wear new clothes if I'm trying to impress people and if I'm going on holiday I'm unlikely to bump into anyone I know, or who will ever see me again.

I do tend to buy clothes on holiday though. For some reason I spend way more than I would on clothes at home, and of course I never wear them at home. Confused

kittya · 21/04/2011 19:18

Mmj, I don't think people were being snobby, just having fun. At least that's what I'm hoping!

The only 'holiday clothes' I have are things I wouldn't need to wear normally - like water shorts for sailing, rash vests and thingy to wear over cossie twixt room and pool. But having aquired them they get worn for years!
