Am thinking of ordering some things from Boden....is this wise?

Have never ordered anything from there before always thought it was a bit mumsy....had a quick flick through a friends catalogue and actually saw some things that I thought looked quite nice and she gave me a 15% off code, but have read a lot of threads on here saying it is all no good this year....

Has anyone ordered any of the following and how did you find them:

for work this jersey tie dress in grey smudge spot

breton tops in pistachio stripe and sailor strip

thsee sixties sandals in silver or these statement sandals in silver metallic

thoughts?

cabbageroses when you refer to 'that dress' do you mean the one originally posted about with the tie waist?

Decorhate · 13/04/2011 06:55

If anyone is thinking of getting the Downtown Heels, M&S have v similar for less than half the price...

cabbageroses · 13/04/2011 07:28

&polyh*- yes that one. Itis totally hideous. Cheap material that feel like polyester. Baggy bodiice which can't be pulled down due to elastic waist. simply horrible. worth £20 in primark.

polyhymnia · 13/04/2011 09:26

Yup, ordered that too and your description is 100% correct! All horrible. Why have they started using that awful polyester-like stuff ?? Same as in their dreadful maxi-skirt. They call it lyocell, but I don't think lyocell is always like that.

whoneedssleepanyway · 13/04/2011 09:37

Hmmm looks like the dress will be going back.

I have two lyocell dresses from Jigsaw and really like them, it is kind of like thin jersey, but the jigsaw ones are two layers of fabric so maybe that makes a difference.

Might exchange the dress for that cardigan Meggles mentioned....

See I am addicted.

poly I do not know why they call it Lyocell- I have had lovely Jigsaw dresses that ARE lyocell and they feel utterly different.

if they are going to sell such rubbish they nee d to price it accordingly.

cabbageroses · 13/04/2011 09:42

Does anyone like the cardi with the chiffony frills on it-£69- to wear with jeans- dressed down? or is it a bit mother of the bride? Bear in mind I am 50s , look younger and size 8-10.

whoneedssleepanyway · 13/04/2011 09:43

that was why I ordered it Cabbage, my lyocell jigsaw dresses are so fab, look great on and really flattering.

hey ho, note to self - don't order lyocell from Boden.

I agree. I would look elsewhere and go back to Boden in the sales or when they have the spend £30 and get a tenner off. Like we'll ever see that offer again.......

polyhymnia · 13/04/2011 10:17

Yes, I've also had other lyocell things which felt very different - much softer. I think it was formerly known as tencel (a fabric which sounds a bit M and S Classic Collectionish), though that may not be right.

Sounds like you'll soon find out, whoneedssleep, but I think I recall that one Boden reviewer of that dress said the spotted colourways were in a rather different feeling fabric from the Ikat ones - the polyesterish one I got was an Ikat. So maybe it won't be so bad...

Just to update, the azure pleated linen dress arrived and is massive. I am usually a 10-12 and ordered 10L (I'm 5'7) as the reviewers said it was short.
I have reordered in a 8R, ST15 gives an extra 15% off the sale price. It is loose fit, but such a gorgeous colour. Gorgeous dress.
I also love the green strappy beach dress that arrived. It is more emerald than jade, and much brighter than in the catalogue.

tulpe · 14/04/2011 18:09

blossoming - I ordered the azure pleated linen dress today in an 8R. I am usually an 8-10 in Boden dresses......surely I cannot need a 6?

When you say "short" - are we talking "really needs to be worn with leggings for decency other than in resort" short? or just shorter than usual for Boden (ie slightly above knee a la their "mini" skirts :o )

blossoming · 14/04/2011 18:24

No, tulpe, the opposite. Reviewers said it was short so I ordered the long, but it comes to my knees, a really frumpy length. Especially with a loose fit dress. So I would guess I will still be hemming the regular length one when it arrives!
I hope the 8R will be perfect. I'm figuring you may need a 6!

whoneedssleepanyway · 16/04/2011 08:06

Well it all arrived...hmmmm

The first sandals I linked to - awful, really uncomfortable, basically the buckle bit is round the back of the ankle so you could feel it would rub badly, should have been round the side so it sort of sits in that little holllow bit below your ankle bone - RETURN

The breton tops - the navy and white stripey one is nice, soft material looks good with skinny jeans and ballet flats. the pistachio one is awful, the green is not a very nice colour, even DH said he hated it - RETURN

The dress - well the jury is out on this one. It is thin but that is just because it is lyocell, feels the same as my jigsaw dresses, but the jigsaw ones are double layered. It may be a bit see through for work i fear. The actual fit and shape are quite nice on me (went for long as I am tall and it is too the knee so fine for work). am going to try it on again and have a think but maybe for the price and the fact that i didn't straight away think yes means it should go back.

So one top.....wouldn't exactly call that an over-riding success.
