Eyeliner/smokey eyes pencil that stays put?

saythatagain · 10/04/2011 09:43

I've seen several women with that natural look - with gentle brown-beigh tones and then a 'just right' amount of smudging above and below the eye. I know how to apply and acjeive it but I can't the correct smudging pencil where it stays put and doesn't me panda/black eye/bags under the eye look. Any suggestions? Ta.

Just bought Max Factor mascara which actually, isn't so good but.....with it came a freebie (Boots, at the moment). It's a dual ended beige cream shadow in one end and a lovely bronze shadow stick thing in the other. Lovely.

Wore it yesterday and did the gym late afternoon and.....still looked subtle and good. I think on it's own, the stick shadow thing is £7.99 but if you buy mascara, it's free. (Not sure if you buy Max Factor mascara).

It's more the eyeliner product I'm after Wendi - what do you use?

Most eye liner / smudging pencils ultimately end in panda eyes. Except this one is pretty good www.beautybay.com/cosmetics/lordberry/blackwardrobepolisheyepencil/

Or, use one from No 7 say, and use a very matt, pigmented eyeshadow over the top to set it.

If you use an eyeshadow equivalent to a pencil with a flat angled brush it will give the same kind of look but won't smudge.

HarlotOTara · 10/04/2011 13:01

I use Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner - loads of different colours and they stay on until I wash it off and I can make it lighter or stronger using a good eyeliner brush. Would definitely recommend it and often do!

MikeRotch · 10/04/2011 14:15

i smudge my estee lauder pencil - goes to a thick line like eyeshadow
doublewear that one

WhatsWrongWithYou · 10/04/2011 16:01

I agree with Kittens - get a dark powder (maybe try a cheapie trio set from Barry M to start with - they do a good grey one), and use it where you'd use eyeliner. You don't have to smudge it with your fingers to soften the line, and it doesn't run.

redandyellowandpinkandgreen · 10/04/2011 16:41

Deffo Urban Decay 24/7 pencils. They give you about 30 seconds to smudge and then don't budge!

TheVisitor · 10/04/2011 16:43

I put shadow over my eyeliner and it lasts all day.

redvelvetmooncupcake · 10/04/2011 17:58

Seconding Urban Decay 24/7 pencils - they are amazing and come in lots of colours - if you are blonde/redhead or light brunette Stash is a sort of khaki/bronzy colour and is way more flattering than black or dark brown. Oil Slick is good if you want black, the slight glitter stops it being too hard/ageing. Bourbon is a lovely rich brown.

tangerinajolie · 10/04/2011 20:53

Agree with Bobbi Brown gel liners - always stay put and are waterproof.
Just smudge while still fresh if you prefer a softer look.

Also, Prestige waterproof pencils (Boots) are fantastic for a cheaper alternative.
I have got a lovely navy blue one (great for brown eyes) and it is such a lovely colour and never wears off or smudges.

southeastastra · 10/04/2011 20:56

no7 liquid liners stay put for ages

TrillianAstra · 10/04/2011 21:12

Ooh yes I bought the Bobbi Brown gel eyeliner with little brush and it takes a little hwile to get used to putting it on but it dos stay put.

Anyone flying on a Virgin Atlantic plane anytime son, you can get black and brown pots of eyeliner + a little brush as a set for £23!!

saythatagain · 10/04/2011 22:12

Thanks for the replies. It's the gentle smudge line that I'm after; not a definitive line, which is more suited to younger gels I think!!!

use a powder or a powder over a kohl eyeliner with a brush like this http://www.boots.com/en/Clinique-Eye-Definer-Brush_16654/

mrsbumbledosem · 10/04/2011 22:26

this one

tulpe · 10/04/2011 23:13

Bourjois do some great eye pencils with a little smudging brush attached. I have just started using them as I find the liquid eyeliner to harsh for spring/summer (unless for evening). Definitely stay put all day.

tulpe · 10/04/2011 23:13

duh: that would be too harsh Blush

QueeferSutherland · 10/04/2011 23:41

I use No7 or brown powder applied with a sharp angled, stiff eyeliner brush. The later lasts longer I find. (I work in a hot environment.)

I use Benefit atm.

Lulie110 · 11/04/2011 00:09

MAC PowerPoint eye Pencil is my suggestion. It's not as soft as a kohl, but you can smudge the line (quickly) for a less defined look. Also concur with the Urban Decay 24/7 suggestion, although I feel they don't go on quite as smoothly as my MAC ones.

TracyK · 11/04/2011 08:07

I find BB gel eyeliner - too harsh and ageing.

Don't kow if you can still get it - Jemma Kidd Stay Put eyeliner is good - one end eyeliner and the other end a wee smudging sponge. I got mine in Boots years ago - but noticed they didn't stock her anymore. Maybe google it or ebay?

Havingkittens · 11/04/2011 11:27

Jemma Kidd liners are great. If you like to wear liner on your waterline (inside the rim of your lashline) this is the best one I've tried so far. You can get them in Space NK. I don't think Boots sell her stuff anymore.

GetOrfMoiLand · 11/04/2011 11:42

I am with Mike - years of being completely underwhelmed by scratchy kohl pencils I have been completely won over by Estee Lauder Doublewear pencil. It lasts for bloody ages. It has a brilliant texture - is waxy, and doesn't drag, and you can either put it on under eyeshadow for a smudgy and smoky effect, or after eyeshadow for more definition.

I have it in onyx (black), a bronzey colour and a dark green.

Can't recommend it enough.

For liquid, No7 inkpot liquid eyeliner, or if you can't do that, the Loreal Superliner felt tips.

Can't be arsed with gel eyeliners, little pots and brushes which get lost. I tried one and didn't like the look of it.

tangerinajolie · 11/04/2011 15:23

Just to say anyone who finds gel liner too harsh - you can control the way it applies with a little practice.

No 7 eyeliner brush is my favourite, just dab very gently into the pot to pick up the gel then brush off on a tissue so there is only a tiny smidge on the brush and then apply to the eye.

Do it in small strokes and build up gradually, thicker at outer corner and soften/smudge with finger or cotton bud.

Honestly, you can have a lovely soft line that is subtle and defining your lash line that does not wear off at all or travel.

TracyK · 11/04/2011 19:06

Maybe it's the colour that I found too harsh from BB - it was Black Mauve and just made me look a bit 'bar maidy'.

Yet another reason to visit Space NK - bugger - more £££!
