What would you buy for £1000 in Tiffany?

DH has some cash he would like to spend on a piece of jewellery for me in the USA (lucky me!) I don't really know where to send him but Tiffany & Co are american so I thought it might be nice to have something from there.

I work in a hospital so would be for informal wear and prob not a ring as I get dermatitis on my hands because of all the handwashing.

Any other recommendations of where I might look would also be fab as I really don't know what I want and he is better with firm direction!

Thanks ladies

look on their website you will be spoilt for choice........

EdgarAleNPie · 28/03/2011 17:39

what about this key pendant chain not included though :)

EdgarAleNPie · 28/03/2011 17:45

this is within budget including chain

moonmother · 28/03/2011 17:47

Nothing to be brutally honest...

I design and hand-make jewellery, so know how much Tiffany/Links etc costs to make. The majority of the cost you pay is for the name.

There are some really lovely small Designers out there that make stunning jewellery, they are more unique as well.

EdgarAleNPie · 28/03/2011 17:48

can you completely blow the budget and then some??

Gottakeepchanging · 28/03/2011 17:53

To be honest it is a complete waste of money. You are paying for the name. I have a few pieces that my dh bought me from Tiffany in new York. They are just cheap and chatty.

You could get a lovely bespoke designer or antique piece for much less.

SnailWhaleTail · 28/03/2011 17:55

Edgar I do like the keys and LOVE the bee but sadly probably can't spend quite that much!

Moonmother, I'm not fussed about it being Tiffany particularly it's just that DH doesn't really have the time to seek out little independents. If you know of where I might find lists of small designers that would be fab. He's in Tampa BTW.

Nothing. Commission something unique from an independent jewellery instead

SnailWhaleTail · 28/03/2011 18:05

That's the thing though DH can't spend much time in town and works with mostly men who are non-native so can't even get recommenations really.

It's all about ease for him!

OrangeBernard · 28/03/2011 18:18

But why does he need to buy it while he's away. A grand is a lot of money to spend on something average.

warthog · 28/03/2011 18:22

i think tiffany jewellery is beautiful. it's not tatty at all. yes, pricey but don't see why people feel the need to put it down.

SnailWhaleTail · 28/03/2011 18:22

He get cash dollars subsistance and would prefer to spend the cash he has in his hand rather than put it in the bank and see it shrink with exchange rates.

Maybe I'll send him off with a request for a specific thing and he can have a look in the jewellers in the malls as they don't really seem to have a downtown or 'old' bit.

there's some lovely stuff in the 'garden' category.

OhCobblers · 28/03/2011 20:17

OP i have a number of Tiffany pieces but if my DH wanted to spend £1k on a piece of jewellery i think it would be much better spent on a bespoke piece. don't know where you live but are you near a "Hatton Garden" type area?

the mark up in Tiffanys is huge so you'd be better off spending the money purely on the stone rather than name (IME). perhaps a diamond pendant if you can't wear a ring? or get a ring and wear it on a chain when you're working? perhaps you could even design a piece together if he was interested?

HTH Smile

OhCobblers · 28/03/2011 20:19

sorry just seen he wants to get it in the US. is that definite or just that its easy location wise for him right now?

crystalglasses · 28/03/2011 20:24

Well, I wouold love a piece of tiffany jewellery even if there is a big mark up. Guess i'm just showy and impressed by labels (sometimes).

Gottakeepchanging · 28/03/2011 22:22

My dh used to get me jewellery when he worked abroad. The Georg Jensen is beautiful. But honestly the Tiffany silver just scratches and it is just not the quality of the rest of the jewellery. My dh used his daily allowances. In the end I just used to meet him at heathrow and exchange the pile of cash for pounds.

Kuantanamera · 29/03/2011 02:24

Snail - The US dollar/ GB pound exchange rate is very good - I think he should put it in the bank and you'll find something lovely together when we he gets home.

petitdonkey · 29/03/2011 09:13

Unless you're set on jewellery, would you consider getting a designer handbag with that money?

Georgimama · 29/03/2011 09:15

Nothing. I'd go to Burlington Arcade in Piccadilly and get a second hand Cartier ring or diamond pin from one of the jewellers there. Or I'd go to the Jewellry Quarter in Brum and get something made.

That's a lot of money that doesn't buy you a lot of mass produced American tat.

Georgimama · 29/03/2011 09:16

You know everyone is obsessed with Tiffany's because of Breakfast at Tiffany's? They didn't actually buy anything in there in the film - they only had $5 or something which was enough to get his money clip engraved. That's romantic.

TotorosOcarina · 29/03/2011 09:18

I'd want him to bring the money home and let me choose something!

Tiffany is tack IMO. So many knock off flying about. All 3 of my sisters have tiffany bracelets they bought from someone at school Hmm

I'd want to take my time and find something special.

SnailWhaleTail · 29/03/2011 09:23

Petitdonkey a handbag would be an option too. He would like to spend cash dollars on something nice for me as he has been away 6 months and I have picked up the slack at home. We don't want the money to come home and go in our bank account as a) it wouldn't be a present from 'away' and b) it would end up being spent in other ways.

Ok, what about suggestions on what you would bring home from the USA?
