Probably a stupid question, but how much does a wedding dress cost?

AbsDuCroissant · 16/02/2011 14:51

What are the sort of price ranges?

I (stupidly) really, really like one of the Vera Wang ones, but from two seasons ago - would this cost like a million pounds?

I'm trying to find out info online, but struggling, so what are the pricing bands?

TIA

[very boringly drawing up budget for the next 18 months. Yes, I'm that boring organised]

I also had mine made, because I wanted something different from the standard shop offerings. It cost about 300 pounds ten years ago

kahlua4me · 16/02/2011 20:41

I had mine made using pictures of some that I liked. Cost about £600.00
I found her in yellow pages in the weddingdress section

Blush

Thanks everyone!

AbsDuCroissant · 17/02/2011 11:19

Oooh - emsy, you do look great.

I didn't realise that bespoke could be so reasonable. hmmmmm

I like the Grace Kelly style - very classic, very elegant.

Looking at dresses is great fun!

You can get lots of beautiful dresses for under a grand. I stupidly fell in love with one that cost £3250. But I got a bargain and bought the shop sample for £2500 with free alterations Grin

catinboots · 17/02/2011 11:54

Have you looked at websites like this orthis

You can get some designer dresses for an absolute bargain!

AbsDuCroissant · 17/02/2011 12:15

The second site's blocked at work Hmm (but then they also block Bravissimo, so I don't knwo what's going on there) but the first one - AMAZING.

i'm not sure how I feel about used dresses, as odd as that sounds. I suppose if the couple are very happy then I'd feel better, but imagine if it was a really acrimonious divorce and they hate each other's guts. Hm.

How long is a piece of string? I didn't want to wear white, so had more choice, but got myself a designer cocktail dress for 500 quid. Gorgeus, and I can wear it again.

catinboots · 17/02/2011 12:20

I would have a used dress deffo. They are worn for about 5 hours then dry cleaned! The only reason I didn't is because I stupidly fell in love with one that was this season Angry so I couldn't get hold of a second hand one.

beanlet · 17/02/2011 12:21

Forgot to say, got it at London Harvey Nicks.

catinboots · 17/02/2011 12:21

Mine was £550 in the sale by Pronovias so prob would have been closer to £1k at full price. Absolutely adored it.

If the Vera Wang one is more than you want to spend take some pics along to a dress maker and see what they can do for you.

TobyLerone · 17/02/2011 13:54

Mine was from a small shop in Canterbury (it's not there any more). It was hideous on the hanger, and was a colour called 'shell pink' (which is in reality a slightly pinkish cream -- it doesn't even look pink). My mum made me try it on because it was a very different style than I was looking at, and when I put it on it was like it was made for me. No alterations, nothing. It was reduced from £850 to £80!

So go and look in clearance sections of wedding dress shops! There might be some which people have dismissed because they look awful on a hanger, but totally different on.

NoHunIntended · 17/02/2011 15:13

Ooh Toby, any pictures of yours? Mine was dusky blush pink, but very very pale, you can barely tell. I have pictures on my old profile here.

NinkyNonker · 17/02/2011 19:18

I got mine for £500, full price £1200 but was a sample. Have a look for these, mine was that year's design, been in store for about a month so tried on however many times in that time. Perfect. Bought it in the first shop I went into, part of me wishes I;d looked longer but hey ho!

NinkyNonker · 17/02/2011 19:22

Like this, top row, far right and one next to it. (ALanna. This is the next year's version though.)

Or this, bottom right.

lv75 · 17/02/2011 21:23

I got mine from Oxfam Bridal - they're new ex-bridal show ones, or donated by shops that have closed down. There are only 11 in the country, and they are above Oxfam shops, look exactly the same as other bridal shops. Got a new Linea Rafaelli gorgeous organza jobbie for £250, veil for £30 and my bridesmaids shoes (rainbow club) for £9. And all the money went to the charity so didn't feel guilty about spending the money on one day. On the oxfam website they can show you where their bridal room stores are. HOpe this helps and have a lovely day x

ChablisLover · 18/02/2011 09:21

oh dear - just looking at all the posts.

I too fell in love with an expensive dress but being an only child and after lengthy discussions with my mum - my v v lovely parents bought it for me. Thanks mum & dad - Love you

It was £2300 8 years ago (even reading that makes me feel guilty and a tad ill!) Plus Jimmy Choos at £650! I was mad yes but it was lovely - was raw silk with v simple beading details on the bodice and a separate skirt. To look at it you would never have said it was that expensive as it wasn't extravagant at all.

Plus I had fallen in love with a different dress in another shop but tried it on in a satin rather than the silk I loved and it was horrible!

Think the answer to your question is how long is a piece of string. It all depends on your budget.

A friend got hers in the pronuptia sample sale for a couple of hundred quid. Whilst another got hers from ebay.

so everyones different

TobyLerone · 18/02/2011 10:05

NoHunIntended, I got married before the days of everyone having a digital camera. All of my wedding photos are on film and I have no scanner. I did wear it again for a Hallowe'en party at my house a few years ago. The theme was 'come as something that scares you' Wink. But the photos of that are on my fb and are hideous!

Yours was lovely and looks more pink than mine. Also much fancier!

Fumblina · 22/02/2011 22:08

I was so lucky my mum bought me the dress I fell in love with.

grace lynette in antique white. But Grace Kelly is gorgeous too Wink

TigerseyeMum · 22/02/2011 22:13

Mine cost £4.99 off ebay, brand new fully-sequined Monsoon silk floor length. Zip needs repairing.

Do I win? Am I the cheapest? Grin

melodyangel · 24/02/2011 16:43

I got mine for £75 in the sale but if I had had the budget I really wanted to visit Joanne Flemming. She's in Brighton so not too far away.

mamatomany · 24/02/2011 18:21

Try and pick one up second hand, mine was £2500 2nd hand, dread to think what the original price was but I'm glad I wasn't the one to pay it.
Dry cleaned and altered it fitted like a glove and was my dream dress.
