Probably a stupid question, but how much does a wedding dress cost?

AbsDuCroissant · 16/02/2011 14:51

What are the sort of price ranges?

I (stupidly) really, really like one of the Vera Wang ones, but from two seasons ago - would this cost like a million pounds?

I'm trying to find out info online, but struggling, so what are the pricing bands?

TIA

[very boringly drawing up budget for the next 18 months. Yes, I'm that boring organised]

freshmint · 16/02/2011 18:00

mine was catherine walker
£4000 14 years ago...

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 16/02/2011 18:03

Dsis put her measurements into a Taiwanese site she found on ebay and got a bespoke one (size wise - she obviously had to choose from a design) delivered for around £100 - handmade by children. It was beautiful.

Fatimalovesbread · 16/02/2011 18:11

My dress cost £750 from a local boutique, it was by eternity

Try here for similar styled one's to those you like, she even has some with straps and sleeves!!

I really wanted some sort of strap and they are harder to find but they are out there. In the end I fell in love with a strapless dress that suited me better than I thought it would.

I've got many more designers to suggest if you need Grin

HippyHippopotamus · 16/02/2011 18:18

mine was £125 and i love it. full length, with an overskirt and train all in shot silk

it was so cheap because i made it myself and didn't give myself any wages Grin (i also had some of the fabric already)

I got my Pronovias Ocarina <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.weddingdress4less.co.uk/resources/ocarina.jpeg&imgrefurl=www.weddingdress4less.co.uk/&usg=__MjpcMtnMC0fMbNXLKNIGLEQB5qk=&h=500&w=464&sz=42&hl=en&start=5&zoom=1&tbnid=XVbfLKQPh5yg6M:&tbnh=130&tbnw=121&ei=7BRcTcKqAs2hOua1_agL&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dpronovias%2Bocarina%26um%3D1%26hl%3Den%26sa%3DN%26tbs%3Disch:1&um=1&itbs=1" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here from eBay for £150! It's stunning and I'm very much looking forward to wearing it (when I can sort out venue, who to invite, how to pay for everything Hmm)

MisSalLaneous · 16/02/2011 18:29

I got mine on Gumtree, of all places. It cost just under £2,000 new, and I bought it (once worn) for £750, after it was already professionally cleaned. Never thought of buying a second hand dress - nothing against it in principle, just didn't think of looking there - but a great bargain for what it was. Drove over to try it on, and absolutely loved it.

Initially tried on dresses in Harrods, and found the assistant rather snooty and irritating. Might just have been her off day, but it made me look at less obvious places, and really glad I did.

MisSalLaneous · 16/02/2011 18:31

This is from last year, but I wonder if you could call Selfridges up and ask when their next sample sale is? VW Sample Sale

VenetiaLanyon · 16/02/2011 18:33

I am also looking for dresses with a bit of decent coverage, rather than the strapless frocks which are ubiquitous, ADC; give us a shout if you find any nice ones, as they seem to be few and far between...

CountBapula · 16/02/2011 18:36

I wore a short ivory prom-style dress from Coast (£120) with a fabulous pair of nude patent Miu Miu slingbacks (£300). Figured I wouldn't wear the dress again but the shoes ... ohh, those shoes ... !

changer22 · 16/02/2011 18:37

Mine was £120 - not a traditional one but a very long floaty 'winter white' long dress from Sahara/Hampstead Bazaar. Several people still say it was the best wedding dress they've seen and this is 12 years later [boastful emoticon] But it was lovely and proves you don't need to spend a fortune!

emsyj · 16/02/2011 18:46

I had mine made as I had a very specific idea of what I wanted and it wasn't available in 'standard' bridal shops (which, as you say, are stuffed to the gills with strapless floor-length dresses). A lady called Joanne Fleming made it - she's based in Brighton and her prices (altho recently increased, judging by the info on her website) are very reasonable by comparison with other bespoke dressmakers/designers. She makes other things aside from wedding dresses too - don't know what her prices are like for skirts/suits etc but she does do them.

My wedding dress was £390 in 2009 (fully bespoke, my design, 5 fittings in total including 3 toile fittings, silk fabric - but quite a basic shape with no boning, beading, lace or anything like that). It's on her website, I'm Emma on the photos in the ballerina length 50s style dress.

carciofi · 16/02/2011 19:00

Emsyj, you looked fantastic! Beautiful dress.

Cristiane · 16/02/2011 19:15

What a fantastic designer emsyj

MistyB · 16/02/2011 19:17

I got mine made by Sandra O'Grady in Chertsey for about 50% of the cost of similar dress and coat combinations that I had tried on in Liberty / Virgin Brides and I got exactly the design I wanted. I liked the idea that it was a one off, made from my sketches.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 16/02/2011 19:26

I think the stores get a bit snotty because so many people try on dresses for fun and to nick the designs to get them made up cheaper.

No excuse to be rude though!

NonnoMum · 16/02/2011 19:43

A feisty Liverpudlian called Thelma made mine...
It had the biggest skirt you've ever seen. And lights. And twirling butterflies.

And 25 matching bridesmaids dresses in lime green.

The worst are the shops that make you wear gloves to try their dresses on...

TrillianAstra · 16/02/2011 20:06

Ooh, I love looking at dresses.

Bumperlicious · 16/02/2011 20:08

£100 from
Monsoon, a strapless column style empire line dress.

Bumperlicious · 16/02/2011 20:13

Emsyj fab dress, great designer and a bargain!

TrillianAstra · 16/02/2011 20:17

Emsyj love the picture!

rookiemater · 16/02/2011 20:20

Mine was £600 from a wedding shop, but I could have got it online for £350. I didn't because it was my wedding and I didn't want the dress not to turn up but the shop assistants were super nasty once I had paid for it so I wish I had just got it online.

Monsoon dresses I saw were not as fitted so would be good for thin ladies but less appropriate for curvy ones.

Go and try some on, have some fun, then see if you can get it cheaper on the internet.

JackieNo · 16/02/2011 20:25

Oxfam have some wedding dresses in their online shop, too
