Do people not have dressing tables any more?

I rather fancy a dressing table in my bedroom.

Table, stool, big mirror, make-up and jewelry, various precious bits of stick, some Lightning McQueen lego, quarter of a pink crayon, Barbie's spare FMP's...

Anyway. The first 3 furniture shops I have looked in don't have any such thing. All the bedroom displays have bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and other bits and bobs, but no dressing table!

Are they obsolete?

This is not a thread asking where to get one; I shall just find a nice table and stool and mirror etc.

But... do YOU have a dressing table? Does ANYONE have a dressing table any more?

Oh my god stantonlacy that is AMAZING! I was going to suggest graham and green - they have such beautiful stuff but yes v pricey!

I don't have a dressing table - i used to have one but I never sat at it as I prefer to stand up to do my hair etc - not sure why!

Something I would love to have and I'm not sure even exists is a jewellery armoire - basically a piece of furniture that is just for jewellery. I saw one once a long time ago and didn't buy it and really really wish I had. Sorry totally irrelevant to thread...:)

I have a lovely Edwardian mahogany dressing table which I got cheap on ebay as it has some drink rings etc on the surface - but doesnt bother me.

I have to have somewhere to sit down and blow dry my hair in front of the mirror.

I have a slightly battered 30s oak one which belonged to my lovely, lovely grandmother. It has a bevelled glass in three parts so you can tilt the side parts forward and view your backside if required! I remember standing among the three parts as a child and watching myself reflected into infinity, and I've seen my own children do it. Oh dear, think I might cry Grin. I'm really glad I have it, could never change it.

Oddly it's too low for a stool.

I spent years wanting a dressing table then one birthday my DH made one for me and a mirror to go with it at xmas. I love using it and makes me feel like a lady sitting there doing my makeup/hair. Unfortunately the DC also like dumping toys/snacks etc on it despite my dire threats!

officerswife,LDNmummy and moragbellingham

Clearly we all have excellent taste - what say you we pool our resources ? Grin
We could do a sort of time share thang, you know...it makes sense, I tell you.

Seriously though, if anyone lives in the Macclesfield area it looks like they might be able to get themselves a bargain - damn you ebay and all your temptations

Who'd have thought dressing tables would make DOD ? Smile

moragbellingham- enough of this dilly dallying about on mumsnet - what about Alfreds defence fgs ?!!

StantonLacy · 09/02/2011 22:50

BettyBleu- oh no, please, no links to dwell - I've sworn off them since dreadful, dreadful customer service a few years ago....and now you coax me back.
Have to admit, very nice though

There's an ad in my newsagent for a 1930's dressing table for £10 I saw as I walked by yesterday.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 10/02/2011 08:53

Tots to Teens - this is pretty.

thegirlwiththemouseyhair · 10/02/2011 09:47

That is a bit fab StantonLacy.
For a new one....

I have a 1920's gorgeous thing, found in an antique shop in Porlock. Huge mirror, 5 drawers, bits of inlay etc etc
Very reasonable and chap offered to drive it up to London for us and hold on to it until we had finished decorating and were ready for it. Shock
Aren't people in the country nice?

There is one in my room at my parents house and I use the chest of drawers surface at home and the top drawers as one with a mirror on the wall behind (but no stool as standing height) but no room for a separate one sadly - though I'd love one!

PetiteBateau · 12/08/2015 12:18

I have a walnut art deco one from a junk shop. I love it. It's got 3 bevelled edge mirrors, with the smaller side ones adjustable. It has a knee hole, with drawers on each side & gorgeous green bakelite handles. I have an edwardian piano stool , also from a junk shop, which fits perfectly with it.

Oh just noticed this is a zombie thread...

PetiteBateau · 12/08/2015 13:12

Oh so it is! Well you have resurrected it Smile

Dukketeater · 12/08/2015 16:12

I think you'll find I didn't ...

NeverNic · 12/08/2015 21:45

I miss mine. I had two (greedy I know!) when I was a teenager. One was wicker and rather battered but when I moved in with my Oh there wasn't the room so we had to get rid. He promised me I'd get one when we got somewhere bigger, but I've yet to replace. I lurk on eBay and dream.
