Do people not have dressing tables any more?

I rather fancy a dressing table in my bedroom.

Table, stool, big mirror, make-up and jewelry, various precious bits of stick, some Lightning McQueen lego, quarter of a pink crayon, Barbie's spare FMP's...

Anyway. The first 3 furniture shops I have looked in don't have any such thing. All the bedroom displays have bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and other bits and bobs, but no dressing table!

Are they obsolete?

This is not a thread asking where to get one; I shall just find a nice table and stool and mirror etc.

But... do YOU have a dressing table? Does ANYONE have a dressing table any more?

I have one. Antique from my MIL. I store my jewellery in the drawers and my makeup in a tiered basket sitting on the top.

Salerooms and auctions might yield results. If you want a modern-looking one, you could buy a plainish "utility" type and paint it.

I had trouble finding a range of furniture for my bedroom that included a dressing table, a lot of people seem to use a chest of drawers with a mirror on the top. I bought my furniture online in the end, my dressing table is not quite like this one www.rightpricefurniture.co.uk/furniture/oaktok025-oaktok026-oaktok027-brooklyn-solid-oak-dressing-table-stool-and-mirror-set.aspx it has 3 deeper drawers, a taller mirror and different handles. The furniture was very good quality though and no problems with delivery. They seem to have discontinued that style but have several different ranges.

I've been looking for one too! We have v simple oak furniture so I either want an oak or a white one. I've been looking for ages but need a v small size to fit the only available space with good light so everything seems too big!

OH's father is a carpenter and has built most of the stuff in our home (beds, bookcases, dining table, stairs (!) etc) but he's not a full time carpenter any more so I feel a bit Confused about asking. This would be really really simple compared to some of the stuff he's built though...

will look at some of the suggestions here when I have more time, but has anyone come across any dressing tables/console tables with seats that are less than 80cm wide?

Elsy · 08/02/2011 18:20

I have a gorgeous deco-style console table made of mirrored glass. Bought it from Graham & Green 5 years ago and use it every day to put on make-up. Unfortunately, DDs also love it so the glass is constantly covered in sticky little finger prints.

Barker&stonehouse Have lots of lovely ones to choose from!!!!!

happybubblebrain · 08/02/2011 18:27

I have a really gorgeous old pine washstand with green art nouveau tiles. I bought it at an auction 10 years ago for about £250. I have my jewelery hanging on the top and on the side rails and makeup and face creams etc in the drawers. And I love it.

teahouse · 08/02/2011 18:54

Don't have a dressing table - don't need one but wouldn't have room anyway. All my stuff is on top of a chest of drawers (OK, 2 chests of drawers!).

CointreauVersial · 08/02/2011 19:06

I couldn't do without a dressing table!

My first one was actually my mother's from the 1960s, but it was a bit of a monster and eventually had to go.

I currently have a low pine chest of drawers with a tilting mirror on top, and a little wicker chair to sit at. It's where I do my hair and make-up, and it has all my necklaces on a stand. The top drawers hold all my make-up, lotions and potions.

ItsAllaBitDeathlyQuiet · 08/02/2011 19:22

I got this one for daughter for Christmas. Is adult sized though. I have one in my own room, table/mirror/stool, cast iron and glass from Homebase a few years ago.

WhatsWrongWithYou · 08/02/2011 19:28

Ghosteditor, atm I have a Davenport similar to this - although mine is pine and less ornate.

It's temporary for me while we decide how to furnish our room, but it does fit into a small space and there's plenty of room for storage. Can put a mirror on the wall above.

MissQue · 08/02/2011 19:29

I haven't the space for one sadly.

taffetasplat · 08/02/2011 19:50

I have DH's grandmother's one. It has a nasty Formica top and a couple of drawers missing but is basically very well made, and it on the list ( no. 643 ) of things to do, replace top with something funky and DH build some new drawers.

Its very useful for hair and make up, pills, hair stuff, sewing kit etc but also tends to get filled with "gifts" from DC. A hair clip here, a note there.

I grwol if DH puts anything on it, though.

taffetasplat · 08/02/2011 19:51

or growl even

ItalianDiva · 08/02/2011 21:25

Dammit. Hadn't even crossed my mind. Now I desperately want one. So glam.

ghosteditor · 08/02/2011 21:57

WWYW I love that! It would go perfectly in my office but would look a bit out of place in my bedroom, house is sadly a 60s terrace so the cool antique furniture I like looks out of place. Would be perfect in my old school-style decorated office though!

[is envious]

ghosteditor · 08/02/2011 21:59

Blush I mean WWWY* sorry!

Acinonyx · 08/02/2011 23:09

I finally got one last year on ebay - it is reconditioned oak - very reasonable price as it has been repaired. I love having a dressing table even though I don't wear make up - I still manage to have plenty of clutter on it.

Teaandcakeplease · 09/02/2011 08:21

I have an antique one given to me by my mum as a present as a teenager and a lovely stool to go with it. Wherever I've gone in life since, so has my dressing table. I love it. To be fair it does look vaguely out of place with everything else in my bedroom, but I'd never part with it Grin

QuickLookBusy · 09/02/2011 08:35

I wanted one for years but never got around to it. About two years ago I finally managed to and I love it. Have a lovely 3 sided mirror thingy on it too, so I can actually see the back of my head, if needs be. [Trys to think of a valid reason why I would-no can't.]

It is from Laura Ashley and was quite expensive, but I waited until they did one of their 25% off sales.

tyzer2001 · 09/02/2011 09:50

I would love one. Tesco direct have a reasonably nice one but I can't justify 'treating' myself to it :(

tyzer2001 · 09/02/2011 10:54

update

Just discovered the console table in the same range was half price so I have flashed the plastic.

I blame you lot.

melikalikimaka · 09/02/2011 12:00

I've got one, its an MFI maple built-in wardrobes and dressing table and stool. I still love it, has a make up drawer with insets for lippie etc. Big gold mirror with a down light to see all my defects wonderfully. Don't know what I'd do If I moved house.

LifeInTheSlowLane · 09/02/2011 12:26

I would love one, but agree that most modern homes don't have bedrooms big enough (or they squeeze an en-suite in and think you don't need one). We moved recently and our bedroom is big enough, but it's long and thin and the layout wouldn't be right IYSWIM, it'd have to go against the wall when I think it needs to be in the window so you get the light.

JoyceBarnaby · 09/02/2011 12:34

I have one now and have had one in every house I've lived in as an adult. Even when we had a tiny bedroom, I had a narrow console table and mirror on the wall. As a child, I desperately wanted one - ideally as part of a pretty pink room like my best friend's. My room was brown and had very few girly features.

I haven't actually grown up to be very girly, but I do love doing my hair & make-up at my dressing table!!

binkeyboo · 09/02/2011 15:17

Hi
Whilst looking for a dressing table for my daughter, I found a lovely selection on the totstoteensfurniture website and most are suitable for adults too. There are some displayed in their store as well. I think they are useful as they declutter the bathroom and give a feminine touch to a bedroom.
