Do people not have dressing tables any more?

I rather fancy a dressing table in my bedroom.

Table, stool, big mirror, make-up and jewelry, various precious bits of stick, some Lightning McQueen lego, quarter of a pink crayon, Barbie's spare FMP's...

Anyway. The first 3 furniture shops I have looked in don't have any such thing. All the bedroom displays have bed, wardrobe, chest of drawers and other bits and bobs, but no dressing table!

Are they obsolete?

This is not a thread asking where to get one; I shall just find a nice table and stool and mirror etc.

But... do YOU have a dressing table? Does ANYONE have a dressing table any more?

DD has a smallish one, we got it off of Ebay. She loves it. I had to treat it for woodworm, but otherwise was in good nick, and bought it for a song.
I don't have one or want one, but I don't wear makeup or care much what I look like.

Deaddei · 07/02/2011 19:59

I have one from John Lewis. The first one I've ever had and I am 50

Stillchuckingit · 07/02/2011 20:23

I used to use an antique one (not very valuable) but I put it in the roof. Don't have time to "sit down" in the mornings so use "tryptych" mirror on top of chest of drawers to blow dry hair/do make up etc while standing. Light better higher up too.

jamaisjedors · 07/02/2011 20:45

I have one. La REdoute have some I think.

icapturethecastle · 07/02/2011 21:06

Cargo Home Store have a couple on sale at the moment. My grandmother had a lovely art deco one which I always wanted but it got sold with her house with she passed away - I was the other side of the world at the time.

mum295 · 07/02/2011 21:10

I have one, it's small but perfectly formed.

I had a larger one in our old house, where our bedroom was huge. My old dressing table is now our desk, downstairs.

I just managed to squeeze one into our new bedroom - spent hours scouring Google for "small white dressing table" until I found one that fit.

I am now dreaming of the day when we extend the house and we once again have a large bedroom with a large dressing table...

Havingkittens · 07/02/2011 21:14

I think I've got a victorian one somewhere in my bedroom, hidden underneath an absurd amount of make up Grin. It was my mum's, she gave it to me when she closed her antique shop and brought another one home from the shop for herself. It's the one she would get ready at when I was a kid, so similar memories to expatinscotland.

If I didn't have that one I would get an art deco one I think. Although I am completely swooning over the one stantonlacy just linked to. It wouldn't go with the colouring in my room though, nor my bank balance I suspect.

I saw one in Homebase recently - it wasn't particualrly exciting, but it was a dressing table.

I've got one I got on Freecycle - it's a dressing chest really, and does the job, but once our house renovation is done, I'd love to treat myself (or be treated to) a Queen Anne style one.

At the moment, my dressing table is my one and a half year old's favourite play thing - he loves arranging all my make up on it! And throwing it around - all my eyeshadows are in bits!

QueeferSutherland · 07/02/2011 21:40

Could you use a console table or a desk?

I really don't like them because I am quite short-sighted and have to lean over with my nose to the glass to see where I'm putting the slap.

I prefer to stand up in the bathroom where the light is better and I can press my face into the mirror.

DD has an antique one I got from the dump.

OhCobblers · 07/02/2011 21:42

i have an antique given as a present - just gorgeous but could do with a really really good polish!

if if didn't have that i think i'd have lots of fun trawling little antique shops / flea markets (where do those exist?) / car boot sales and Ebay to find one.

1gglePiggle · 07/02/2011 21:42

I got mine from laura Ashley but it wasn't the best quality - the stool legs got wobbly then snapped (ps. I'm not that fat lol).

Ikea have a similar one that is a lot cheaper and looks just as nice. Don't get a lot of time to sit at it these days. It's covered with loose powder and I have to keep moving the straightener cables away from exploring hands!

brimfull · 07/02/2011 21:44

I have one in my room at my parents house , gorgeous walnut 60's design.
Trouble is they live in Canada ,wish I could afford to have it shipped.

exexpat · 07/02/2011 22:01

I have one a bit like this but in walnut and with a triple mirror. There are loads of 1930s ones on ebay - everyone's granny had one.

BertieBotts · 07/02/2011 22:09

Viola - they've also given me an entire set of plates, cups, cutlery etc. I already had some! Confused And an old top of his sister's. And various ancient barely-working toys for my DS.

The thought is quite sweet I suppose. I'm a little concerned that if things go well between us I'm going to end up with utterly insane in-laws Grin

StantonLacy · 07/02/2011 22:25

havingkittens Aha, but it comes in different colours, you see ! (I might have done a little bit too much research on it/stared at it longingly for ages/emailed the manufacturers etc Blush)
And as for the cash aspect - do you really need to buy such things as shoes for the children for example (it's very healthy to be barefoot, after all) when such a glorious item could be within your reach ? Wink

hifi · 07/02/2011 22:47

i want a kidney shaped one, i dream about it

ViolaTricolor · 08/02/2011 00:20

Grin Bertie. Imagine the wedding presents -- maybe a sideboard and a set of antimacassars.

Studentnurse1 · 08/02/2011 01:41

yes! its dark so mahoganey? rosewood? with a triple mirror on it too. adorned with a few trinket boxes, and necklaces hanging from the mirror frames!
The stool has turned and carved legs and is about 20 years old. that reminds me... needs re-covering!

reallygrumpy · 08/02/2011 09:03

I'd always wanted one so when we moved into this house, DH bought me an art deco one on eBay which I love. I need to get some pots for make up to go on top. DD loves it and likes to sit in front of it when I do her hair in the mornings.

pissedrightoff · 08/02/2011 09:12

See if any nearby hotels are re-furbing.
This is how I got mine. For free (even better)

wendihouse22 · 08/02/2011 10:07

I think it's because houses are build now to fit a double bed..... a chest of drawers and a linen bin.

My mum had one (I'M 48) but she also had a big old house where furniture looked lost in it!!

BlingLoving · 08/02/2011 11:14

I am feeling inspired to make mine prettier! My make up gets piled up because I use the drawers as desk drawers with papers etc. Definitely need to fix that!

LDNmummy · 08/02/2011 11:38

I am definitely going to have one after I move home this summer. Not just for me but for DP too. He needs somewhere to put his many bits and bobs as much as I do. He's very old fashioned and carry's handkerchiefs for instance, would love somewhere nice to put them other than the sock drawer.

LDNmummy · 08/02/2011 11:41

StantonLacy that looks lovely.
