Heavy breathing, wild eyed frock crisis...

gizmo · 03/02/2011 21:15

So, I get into work this morning and find an impressively heavy gilt invitation on my desk, which turns out to be an invitation to the Lord Mayor of London's Trade and Industry dinner. Apparently this is not the rubber chicken dinner I was expecting, but quite a big deal rammed with financial big wigs and politicians.

Here's my dilemma: invitation says 'black tie' but it's essentially a business event so I don't want to rock up in full blown ball gown. On the other hand I'm expecting the place to be stuffed with sleek high maintenance bankers and I don't want to be the scruff in the corner.

I've just spent 20 minutes furtling through my wardrobe, waiting for the solution to magically appear (obviously hoping that there would be some Perfectly Devastating little designer number in there that I had unaccountably forgotten) but there's nothing there. So, ladies, I'm out of my depth and need wise counsel - please help?

Practicalities: I'm 5'4'', size 10-12 (10 on the bottom, 12 around the shoulders). Broad shoulders, slightly thick waisted, slim hips, nice arse and legs. I know I can wear deep v and scoop necks, and that asymmetric wrap things work well on me. Would like something that isn't too long and preferably has some colour. Budget up to £250.

Oh and I haven't begun to think about shoes/accessories...or hair...or make up. Waaaaahh!

this?

this?

hmmm

hmm

HuckingFell · 03/02/2011 21:28

my goodness there are some howlers here

gizmo · 03/02/2011 21:31

Ah, thanks Hucking. Of that lot I think the Fenn Wright Manson one is closest to the spot (If you put shoulder pads/embellishments on me it's hard to get me through a doorway!). I do like a bit of chiffon, and it's not impossible to see me on the train in it.

I've been digging around and am rather taken by Gershwin here although it might be a bit psychadelic,

or this if it were a bit shorter

Yikes !!! That t-shirt dress thing looks like a nightie you might wear if you had to go into hospital at short notice.

Sorry to butt in, but that Fenn Wright Manson one is absolutely gorgeous.

gizmo · 03/02/2011 21:36

It is nice, isn't it? My only worry is that I look really lumpy in a lot of frocks that have a seam across the waist - I've got a slightly thick (and short) waist, and slim hips, so it all goes rather straight up and down. I'm best off with something that gives me a bit of width round the bum if poss.

I like the gershwin one, could be v nice. that julian macthingy is guaranteed to look cheap.

brassick · 03/02/2011 21:45

Well I have to be honest; I was looking at it from my own point of view, and that style is perfect for me (also 5'4", but size 16-18 curvy with an OK waist, large(ish) hips and big boobs)...sorry!

traceybath · 03/02/2011 21:50

Gizmo - how old are you? Its just that gershwin one is quite old.

BitOfFun · 03/02/2011 21:50

None of them look dressy enough for a black tie to me.

gizmo · 03/02/2011 21:52

Yes, I want to avoid cheap if at all possible, Hucking. Actually there is bunches of horribleness all round on that Debenhams site.

Some of the Anoushka ones on the House of Fraser site are nice too (swallows hard at price tag) but they're all v long & balldressy.

traceybath · 03/02/2011 21:52

ok its black but lovely

subtle but slinky

You can see I'm a fan of Viv.

gizmo · 03/02/2011 21:55

I'm 40, Traceybath, and although I'm not doing too badly, couldn't fool anyone that I'm 20 any more.

I know, Bitofun, but I've got to go on the train in it! And the photos I've seen on the web suggest it's a sober wealth sort of thing.

traceybath · 03/02/2011 21:56

OK well hobbs a bit too frumpsville then I think.

Seriously take a look at the Viv Anglomania dresses - they're lovely and would suit your shape perfectly.

BitOfFun · 03/02/2011 22:01

I think tracey is right about the Anglomania one.

gizmo · 03/02/2011 22:08

Yes, Anglomania rather fine. Sorry to be unresponsive, on phone to mother!

FellatioNelson · 03/02/2011 22:12

You need to be at least a bit ballgowny though? Confused It doesn't have to be a frilly lampshade, but it does need to fit the brief of black tie...

FellatioNelson · 03/02/2011 22:23

FellatioNelson · 03/02/2011 22:24

FellatioNelson · 03/02/2011 22:26

Yes, or if not long, then at least a drop dead gorgeous cocktail dress. Some of these are lovely but too day-wear, or too casual.

KurriKurri · 03/02/2011 22:30

I agree with BOF - I thought Black Tie meant long dress. Fellatio's 'elegant' one is lovely IMO.

FellatioNelson · 03/02/2011 22:42

if your legs are up to it!

gorgeous

NorrisMcSquirter · 03/02/2011 22:52

Yes the "elegant" one!

Business like but black tie.

Will your shoulders be ok in strapy straps?

gizmo · 03/02/2011 22:52

Hmmm, some more websearching and I'm gradually coming around to the idea of needing to dress it up a bit:

here's Sam Cameron, for instance, and Osborne and missus.

Very long conversation with mother and a masterclass in online shopping! Off to look at all your suggestions now!
