Heavy breathing, wild eyed frock crisis...

So, I get into work this morning and find an impressively heavy gilt invitation on my desk, which turns out to be an invitation to the Lord Mayor of London's Trade and Industry dinner. Apparently this is not the rubber chicken dinner I was expecting, but quite a big deal rammed with financial big wigs and politicians.

Here's my dilemma: invitation says 'black tie' but it's essentially a business event so I don't want to rock up in full blown ball gown. On the other hand I'm expecting the place to be stuffed with sleek high maintenance bankers and I don't want to be the scruff in the corner.

I've just spent 20 minutes furtling through my wardrobe, waiting for the solution to magically appear (obviously hoping that there would be some Perfectly Devastating little designer number in there that I had unaccountably forgotten) but there's nothing there. So, ladies, I'm out of my depth and need wise counsel - please help?

Practicalities: I'm 5'4'', size 10-12 (10 on the bottom, 12 around the shoulders). Broad shoulders, slightly thick waisted, slim hips, nice arse and legs. I know I can wear deep v and scoop necks, and that asymmetric wrap things work well on me. Would like something that isn't too long and preferably has some colour. Budget up to £250.

Oh and I haven't begun to think about shoes/accessories...or hair...or make up. Waaaaahh!

Coming late to this but sounds like you have an identical figure to me, although am a smidge taller! I adore this dress - sorry if it's been done before.

I get drowned in full length stuff, much easier to look sexy wreathed in silk like this.

Don't know about your colouring but this with killer heels would looks amazing.
Or this if you look like Danni Minogue..

KikiJane · 04/02/2011 10:50

this?

gizmo · 04/02/2011 11:06

Hahaha at Danni Minogue or indeed anyone vaguely groomed. I am rather more 'through a hedge backward' in my personal style.

Oranges, that Maxmara dress is looovely, although it would have to be a properly dark red for me - I can't do tomato.

I think MadameCholet has a point. There is a nice little boutique in the middle of Cambridge which has some good eveningwear, if you steer clear of the beading. I shall add that to our shopping trip itinerary. Otherwise it's John Lewis and LK Bennett all the way at the moment, since we don't have a House of Fraser closer than Milton Keynes Sad

I love the middle black dress on evening wear on that site gizmo...really gorgeous, and no one else would have it on...:)

Frankly, if you're invited in your own right rather than as an 'other half' I would go for the Anglomana Donna or the JL 'elegant'. Not the time for overtly pretty, girly, or sexy. This is work, right?
