Heavy breathing, wild eyed frock crisis...

gizmo · 03/02/2011 21:15

So, I get into work this morning and find an impressively heavy gilt invitation on my desk, which turns out to be an invitation to the Lord Mayor of London's Trade and Industry dinner. Apparently this is not the rubber chicken dinner I was expecting, but quite a big deal rammed with financial big wigs and politicians.

Here's my dilemma: invitation says 'black tie' but it's essentially a business event so I don't want to rock up in full blown ball gown. On the other hand I'm expecting the place to be stuffed with sleek high maintenance bankers and I don't want to be the scruff in the corner.

I've just spent 20 minutes furtling through my wardrobe, waiting for the solution to magically appear (obviously hoping that there would be some Perfectly Devastating little designer number in there that I had unaccountably forgotten) but there's nothing there. So, ladies, I'm out of my depth and need wise counsel - please help?

Practicalities: I'm 5'4'', size 10-12 (10 on the bottom, 12 around the shoulders). Broad shoulders, slightly thick waisted, slim hips, nice arse and legs. I know I can wear deep v and scoop necks, and that asymmetric wrap things work well on me. Would like something that isn't too long and preferably has some colour. Budget up to £250.

Oh and I haven't begun to think about shoes/accessories...or hair...or make up. Waaaaahh!

Sorry, try that link again Osborne and missus. I think my mac had heart failure at having to link to the Mail!

Oh, are we going long now?

FellatioNelson · 03/02/2011 22:59

this is pretty

gorgous colour

this?

FellatioNelson · 03/02/2011 23:03

red?

check the back on this - lovely

FellatioNelson · 03/02/2011 23:04

God that Biba one is luscious. Grin

gizmo · 03/02/2011 23:04

I think I'm allowing myself to be persuaded Tethersend (easily led emoticon). On the one hand we have Mrs G Osborne (poor woman, I'm sure she has an identity of her own) snappy in Mad Men esque mid calf blue satin, on the other Sam Cameron in elegant floor length black pillar. So it looks as if I could go either way.

So far I am really liking Fellatio's elegance and gorgeousness (which on screen is just my dream frock for all sorts of things) and Tethersend's LK Bennet chiffon extravaganza.

Noris my shoulders are generally OK provided the straps aren't too 'spaghetti'.

Ah this is brilliant...I knew you'd all know where to look. I'm definitely warming up to the Anoushka G stuff, and may try to wear all of it at once...with hilarious consequences.

The Biba frock is fantastique, no? But I'm a bit nervous about a frock where the majority of the interest is in the back because sadly my back is rather mole-y and spotty...not my best feature.

tethersend · 03/02/2011 23:11

That Biba dress is the one.

It is gorgeous.

FellatioNelson · 03/02/2011 23:12

Which gorgeous one? The green or the deep purple-red?

FellatioNelson · 03/02/2011 23:13

It's fab isn't it. Grin

gizmo · 03/02/2011 23:15

Well both the green and the red purple (colour wise that might be the winner).

OP posts:
gizmo · 03/02/2011 23:17

The Biba frock is lovely on the model, but she has a waist and hips. Which I really don't, sadly.

OP posts:
tethersend · 03/02/2011 23:18

I like the purple biba one.

gizmo · 03/02/2011 23:18

Ooooo (faintly) they've got it in red...

Maybe I could make a waist.

Completely inappropriate but v. pretty so thought I'd link it anyway www.monsoon.co.uk/new-dresses/sansone-maxi-dress/invt/85315741/&bklist=icat,5,shop,women,dresses,wommaxidress

My sensible suggestion www.frenchconnection.com/product/Woman+Collections+Dresses+Maxi/71BZ7/Meadow+Maxi+Dress.htm long but quite business like and covers tops of shoulders - fabric might look a bit cheap though, can't tell in the pic

BitOfFun · 03/02/2011 23:34

How? The jersey would show any foundation-wear.

That elegant dress was best for the purpose, in my opinion.

NorrisMcSquirter · 03/02/2011 23:37

There is underwear for that kinda thing, Gizmo.

Damn, I need an excuse to wear a gown.

NorrisMcSquirter · 03/02/2011 23:49

Would it be the height of madness to suggest a skirt and slinky top to create a waist?

Maybe something nicer?

NorrisMcSquirter · 03/02/2011 23:54

Waist

Smart, waist not needed.

Sorry if these gave been linked to already.

traceybath · 04/02/2011 06:28

Biba one lovely.

Elegant one pretty but I think the material looks a bit cheap.

FellatioNelson · 04/02/2011 07:35

If you are only a size 10 how much of a thick waist is it possible to have? Confused

gizmo · 04/02/2011 09:34

Thank you ladies! I do have a very pretty corset, but having slept on it I think BitofFun is right, the jersey in that Biba one is going to cling to any foundation garment like a bastard - I might as well wear it on the outside!

DH has offered to take me shopping Shock so I think we will head to John Lewis first and see what the fabric in that nice elegant frock looks like - if it's a heavy lined satin it might be just the job. Also I'm going to rootle through LK Bennet because I loved that ballerina-y thing.

Coast stuff sometimes has enough built in structure to improve my waist, so that's a good call, Norris.

I'm sounding waist obsessed now, aren't I? I just have that slightly irritating problem of being a 12 around the middle and a 10 around the bum so it's not so much there's no waist as no contrast with the hips. Basically I am a bloke Grin

Gizmo, if you buy at big high street chains you are always in danger of wearing the same dress as someone else..

Do you have any independent boutiques you can go to?
