Am early 40s and have no desire to be mutton dressed as lamb...still looking for the trad white number, but not sleeveless and / or backless - anyone seen anything good? Smile

Thanks folks; VTC, your stunning one is definitely closer; top might make me look a bit matronly in the bust, but def along the right lines - hurrah!

Am wondering about channelling my inner Gwyneth Paltrow in Emma, and going empire line with capped sleeves - thoughts?

Drapey but fitted?

another one?

Will come back later to look for empire lines.

KikiJane · 31/01/2011 12:10

Empire line is a waste of an hourglass figure, IMO.

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 12:16

Yep - empire could still look like a sack of spuds and make your bum/tum look bigger

FellatioNelson · 31/01/2011 12:44

Those vintage dresses on VTC's link are gorgeous. That 50's one, with the lace bodice, fitted sleeves, boat neck, hobble skirt and full train is very similar to my prediction for Kate's. Grin

how about [http://www.berketexbride.com/cgi-bin/sh000001.pl?REFPAGE=http%3a%2f%2fwww%2eberketexbride%2ecom%2facatalog%2fComplete_Range%2ehtml&WD=deborah&SHOP=%20&PN=Product_Range__Deborah_167%2ehtml%23aJA10790#aJA10790 this]

DingDongMerrilyAsCheese · 31/01/2011 12:51

duh! or this

MrsHenryWood · 31/01/2011 13:35

I still think I'd like to try on an empire line ....nice dress DingDong; guess the downside is that the old upper arms are still on show...

then go and try them, I had the most fun in the world trying on wildly inappropriate dresses and forcing saleswomen to find complimentary things to say about them!

DingDongMerrilyAsCheese · 31/01/2011 13:37

FWIW the ladies at Berketex are just lovely.

OmicronPersei8 · 31/01/2011 13:41

Not long, but another gorgeous Vivien of Holloway.

KikiJane · 31/01/2011 14:16

I had a very definite idea of what I wanted for my wedding dress. Turned out that what I wanted suited me far less than the style my mum made me try on for contrast (and which I eventually bought).

So yes -- try on as many styles as you can lay your hands on.

OmicronPersei8 · 31/01/2011 14:34

Ok, last try.

v-neck empire

elegant but bare arms

And I'd say yes, try dresses on, I wish I'd been more open-minded when I chose mine.

twoboots · 31/01/2011 14:39

i'm a big vivienne of holloway fan but i think candy anthony are a bit more special

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 14:46

I know you said not lace but this is fab-eroony

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 14:47

this cut is the Georgian style you mentioned

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 14:53

costume wedding dress - regency Might be a bit too realistic and boring Grin

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 14:56

you could always get someone to make one for you.

I did. I was inspired after watching Shakespeare in Love and although my dress wasn't orange velvet, I based my dress on her's and had navy velvet inverted pleats in the dress. And a navy velvet train too.

vintageteacups · 31/01/2011 14:57

A friend of my mum made it and she only charge about 250 to make it. I bought the material and it wasn't that expensive even with the silk and velvet. It just meant that I had the perfect dress I had designed and which fitted just how I wanted.

whirlygig · 31/01/2011 14:58

There's a glorious vintage inspired design here.

MrsHenryWood · 31/01/2011 17:54

Thanks all; some fab inspiration here; clearly I have a lot to try on Grin

OK, going back in to sort out the DIVINE one.

Here. It's luscious. Jane Austen meets Ginger Rodgers meets Grecian Goddess

FellatioNelson · 31/01/2011 20:45

That 'Christina' one you need to look at with the matching fitted bolero jacket so not strapless.

Lovecat · 31/01/2011 20:52

Oh, if the op doesn't buy FN's dress then I will - it's GORGEOUS!
