Hi, can I have some opinions on engagement rings please?

About engagement rings, I get to choose because that was what I wanted. I'm deciding between these at the moment. Which ones do you think are prettiest and most engagement ring like? And least like costume jewellery!

Not part of the above, but i'm avoiding Diamonds as I prefer coloured gems, but if i wasn't i'd choose a marquise (diamond shaped!)diamond.
Out of curiosity, Do you prefer precious gems (diamonds, rubies, sapphires, emeralds) for engagement rings than less valuable gems? And how any of you would prefer a diamond?

first or fourth one

HollyBollyBooBoo · 27/11/2010 23:24

Is it too early to say congratulations on your engagement or are you not technically engaged yet??

Anyhoo...please don't do number 2 the same year as the Royal engagement people will always assume you copied Kate.

How will your wedding band work with these, I can't work out how it will sit around the stone. My honest opinion is they all look 'costumey' but they might not when on your engagement finger and then with a wedding band also.

Have you seen the new Tiffany & Co yellow diamonds? They are sooo beautiful!

Go · 27/11/2010 23:27

Solitaire diamond or nothing, sorry. (nothing in my case). But I love the look of my wedding ring with nothing else to distract from it.

beautyspot · 28/11/2010 04:58

3 or 4 are quite nice. I don't have an engagement ring as I don't really like them.

beautyspot · 28/11/2010 05:00

Oooo I like the ones that Mathanxiety suggested.

diddl · 28/11/2010 07:46

I like the last one best.

I only found one ring I liked & it happens to be diamonds.

It looks like a daisy.

woolymindy · 28/11/2010 07:55

4 is the nicest

twoboots · 28/11/2010 08:55

i had a bespoke ring designed by harriet kelsall
It has warm autumn tones: matte rose gold and cognac diamonds. I would never dream of taking it off just because it doesnt go with a given outfit.

letsblowthistacostand · 28/11/2010 09:09

None of those are to my taste. Keep in mind you are going to be wearing it all the time so it has to be comfortable! Your ones look like they would get in the way.

FWIW mine is 3 diamonds all the same size.

featherblue · 28/11/2010 11:15

I think 3 & 4 are gorgeous. Congrats!

MissFlick · 28/11/2010 13:27

I really like the first one.

Oh, they're all lovely, I love coloured stones, as long as they're good ones, cheapo sapphs/rubies look awful. Gorgeous choice for an engagement ring but be careful - settings with loads of little diamonds are not as hard-wearing as plain ones

whoneedssleepanyway · 28/11/2010 21:05

I prefer diamonds myself, if I was to go for any of them I would go for the last one but with a blue topaz or aquamarine instead of the sapphire. Not keen on saphires or rubies really.

SoupDragon · 28/11/2010 21:09

I don't like any of them.

SoupDragon · 28/11/2010 21:10

I prefer far simpler designs.

KangarooCaught · 28/11/2010 21:17

I like the 2nd for the colour contrast of the vivid blue against the diamonds but often saffires can look dull in colour like the square cut one.

choklitmountain · 28/11/2010 21:21

Really like number 1, but also number 3 is equally lovely - both bery elegant.

MrsJohnDeere · 28/11/2010 21:22

I don't like any but 1 and 2 are the best of a bad bunch. (but very Princess Di/Kate Middleton, which may or may not be a good thing). 3 is just awful.

I guess we have very different taste in rings!

MamaVoo · 28/11/2010 21:23

I like the stone in number 1 best, but the setting of number 3.

Nearly everyone I know has a diamond solataire and really they all look so similar, so I think it's nice to be different.

Stone-wise I think it should come down to what you like the look of. I was looking for a pink sapphire but ended up with a tourmaline because it was a nicer shape and colour than any of the sapphires I saw.

Congratulations on your engagement.

activate · 28/11/2010 21:26

I agree that they look like costume jewellery and are not to my taste

As you asked I think engagement rings should be a diamond and preferably a solitaire

BitOfFun · 28/11/2010 21:31

I liked number two the best out of those.

MmeLindt · 28/11/2010 21:32

I like one and four best of the ones you have chosen, although I am a diamond solitaire girl myself.

I bought mine here and can highly recommend them.

I am not keen on coloured gemstones as they can look like costume jewellery, particularly rubies.

For info about diamonds have a look here.

Congratulations on your engagement.

amothersplaceisinthewrong · 28/11/2010 21:35

First one is lovely, rest awful, espeicalloy the Ruby.

drfrosty · 28/11/2010 22:18

I'd like to recommend Ingle and Rhode - you can get any design you want, plus ideas and advice if you want them, and they are an ethical company - something that was very important to me. I knew I only wanted to have one very comfy ring (rather than a separate engagement ring and wedding band)with a bit of bling to it but not stones so large I'd need to remove it for day to day activities. My now-husband wanted a plain and comfy ring in the same metal. Mr Rhode was a delight to deal with and the price for the rings compared favourably with similar rings/materials we'd looked at in shops. We dealt with them completely by phone and email, it was all easy despite us being so far away from London there was no chance of going to meet them. The rings arrived exactly when promised and in the style and size we wanted.
