Am I too old for this dress?

here

I bought it in black, it's soooo cheap and suits my shape (happy with top half, finally, a year after birhm but still got a gut on me) but is it too short for a 34 year old size 14? How would I style it to look classy, not cheap? And please don't find me more expensive alternatives Smile, I can't afford them Sad. Cheers m'dears.

Lovely dress, sure you'll look fab! Size 14 is NOT fat Angry

DilysPrice · 28/11/2010 17:50

Slightly off topic, but I'm overwhelmed by the helpfulness of the New Look website specifying the size and height of the model in the photos. Give that webdesigner some kind of award! (possibly I'm just behind the times and everyone does this nowadays - I'm literally curvy so can't buy online)

diddl · 28/11/2010 18:16

So if you know how tall the model is, how do you convert that to how long the dress would be on yourself?

Wouldn´t the dress length be useful as well?

DilysPrice · 28/11/2010 18:20

I find it easier to mentally convert from model height to my height - if she's 4 inches taller than me and it's skimming her knickers then it should be respectable on me. In theory you can do the same with dress length, but I never have those figures in my head.

diddl · 28/11/2010 18:30

Well, I´m so short that anything above a models knee is still likely to be around my ankles.

But I do have a couple of lengths of dress that I know I like on me iyswim.

Genuinely gob smacked by the 'whore outfit' comment... crikey. But not perturbed me in least as it has strengthened resolve - tried dress on again with opaque tights and a black bolero cardie I have, I have no doubt it doesn't look whore-ish in the slightest.
And feeling a warm glow at not being the type of person who writes such utterly arsey comments on other folks' posts Wink

wow, this thread got bitchy when I was gone! Sorry OP, the dress looked very short on the pic, I didn't see the info on the side that said it was above the knee. If it's longer than bum length then I'm sure it will look lovely on, maybe with black tights and shoe boots?

iknowanoldlady · 28/11/2010 18:37

Doh, just read all the posts, and realise my mistake, was not being called a whore outfit. Apologies tummygoingslowly, very very dim of me.Blush

Lovely dress - and not at all muttonish.

Beautyspot - are you a man? Or just a knob?

LoudRowdyDuck · 28/11/2010 18:49

That is a gorgeous shape, very sexy and I think you would need some curves to wear it properly.

Btw: it is stupid, ill-informed crap to say a size 14 is fat. Sizes are not standardized. A shop can slap whatever label it likes on a piece of clothing, whatever size it is. If you think a size 14 is hugely fat, it is probably because you shop somewhere that makes very large size 14s ... think about that!

Personally, I tend to think of myself as a size 14, but today I was shopping and in Brora was an 8-10, in Karen Millen, French Connection and on the market a 14, in Topshop a 10 and in Gap an 8 (because they use American sizing, I think). Size is just a number, and OP, you will look great.

I would suggest that opaques in a colour other than black always give a bit of an edge - you don't want anything that looks obviously kooky, just a dark colour with a hint of blue or purple is good. I think it would look best with round-toe heels -=- if you can walk in these, they would be very glam for a party:

tummysgoingslowly · 28/11/2010 19:00

No no no - I meant it as tongue in cheek - it's genuinely NOT a whore outfit, although someone suggested we size 14's shouldn't wear that sort of thing.

I think it's gorgeous

Sorry if it came out badly Blush
