WATERPROOF bum-covering COATS: I am doing the research so you don't have to...

Can we just have one thread in anticipation of autumn/winter? No, we don't all want a Boden coat because a. they're not properly waterproof and b. EVERY other bugger in the playground has one already. So, I'm after technically sophisticated properly waterproof coats that GO IN AT THE WAIST that are somewhere in between hiker and fashion victim. Inevitably, this means EXPENSIVE usually I'm afraid. Some suggestions below. If you would like to add yours, especially cheaper ones, feel free:

Northface Stella Grace Good good good

Marmot highlander Marmot do some excellent longer waterproof jackets but unfortunately I cannot find lots of stockists in UK

Barbour are doing some nice coats these days [hit view all to see full range]

And even some of their wax jackets are wearable!

Now look here High Fash-hags Creenstone, a dutch company, do some very INTERESTING coats, apparently waterproof and technical... but difficult to find UK stockists or prices: can anyone track 'em down?

That's enough for now. will post more later. Please add suggestions but only ACTUAL waterproof coats please.

Ooooh I like the Barbour Winter Force Parka as well though...

Yogahair · 21/10/2011 22:14

DROWNING are you still there? Having had a good look at the Didriksons coats I rather like the DESIREE a it's a bit more funky looking, but still seems very high tech. The Elly and the Isabelle look a bit boring to me. Like everyone else on this wonderful thread I want a good coat for rain and cold. I will be walking having just acquired a Jack Russell with bags of energy!

Hi there,

For those who ordered the "cuckemere" parka (aigle), did you receive it ? If so, which colour did you go for? Are you happy with it ?

I bought a very nice Tommy Hilfigher parka (model: maria) in black. It has a great design and a smart shiny finish (right balance between the sporty & the posh look) but ... it doesn't keep me warm at all (despite that it is made of goose) :/. I tested it outdoors (around 9°) and I didn't keep me properly warm so if we get the foreseen rude winter :s...

I found the "cuckmere" jacket on the website of Aigle. If found it nice but maybe too classic plus I was not convinced by the colour range. I would have love this model in white, bone or any light & neutral shade. But as Aigle is a really good brand with high quality clothes, I went to the shop and ordered it in Small in "night (dark blue, the other colour is cuir, a kind of intense cognac). When I went back to the store to try it on I was amanzingly surpised. Night is an almost black shade which is easier to wear than a real blue. It is really warm and comfy but very feminine at the same time. I had black thights and high heels and it fitted with the model (versatile, can be worn with classic or casual shoes/clothes).

I will return my tommy this week to the shop and I will probably buy this cuckemere (still hesitating between the cuir or night colour) but I would love to have other customers review before doing so (I am not a professional of winter coat :p)

Wish you already a nice Sunday ladies :)

ps: sorry for my English, I am French speaking :)

I ordered the Trespass, then sent it back. I'm usually a medium but it did come up small, it fitted but not with thick tops on under! It's more North Face sizing, that always gets me across the back. Nearly went for the Craghopper, as I had good discount codes. Not great looking from the pics, but I've often had their technical clothes and they do actually do the job. So I would trust their blurb of an insulated, long waterproof coat. Ended up getting the Trespass in large, it's like wearing a duvet! And is properly long. It's also very light.

I'll see what their definition of water resistant actually means over the winter. Last year I had a slightly padded parka from Next that was probably just water resistant. It was wonderfully warm and kept me dry. I am in the South, but it kept me toasty in Scotland for a December holiday, and only started to get properly wet after 5 hours of being out and about walking in continual snow. I had proper walking gear for hiking up the hills, but the Next parka was great for touristy things. I spilt paint over it :( or it'd be my winter coat for this year. This season they don't seem to do the same product,

So hopefully the Trespass will be fine with normal rain. It'll be mainly my winter walk to the shops coat, rather than a 5 mile round walk to the school. I work, I drive! I have plenty of proper waterproof gear for real freezing rain and the outdoors. Fingers crossed it doesn't get soaked though with 20 mins of soft southern rain. They make cheap but perfectly OK ski gear, so that gives me hope ;)

I have just bought the dark purple (navy-toned) Craghoppers Haddenbury from Trekware. Reduced from £100 to £69.95. It's probably the warmest coat I've ever had - and it's waterproof. I feel like I'm wrapped up in a duvet Smile.

louisejane · 14/11/2011 14:26

Hi, I have just bought the parka style HT W HILTON 2 JKT from Helly Hansen, it is a great shape and waterproof and very warm, even better was that I got it from Bicester Village for £120.

nobodysfool · 13/12/2011 23:12

oohhhh nice coats ladies....starts googling for next purchase

LizzieBusy · 14/12/2011 09:28

SantieMaggie · 14/12/2011 19:42

In short which coat is cheap, warm, waterproof and will cover my large bum?

nobodysfool · 14/12/2011 22:07

LizzieBusy - oohh your link just shows the home page, which one did you get?

trulyscrumptious43 · 15/12/2011 09:31

Not bum covering (I am ok without) but looks warm and fitted...they do sizes up to age 16, which fit me (8-10)

There is someone on ebay selling these for £30. What do you think?
Not waterproof though I guess, from the info I've gleaned here...

Not sure if anyone is still reading this thread but I got a fantastic WATERPROOF winter coat for myself which covers my bum and can be cinched in at the waist so it isn't completely shapeless! I bought the Didrikson's Celeste parka in white - sizing was generous so went down a size which is never a bad thing! VikingKids are also offering reductions on their winter coats right now - so have bought DD the fuschia kids coat which she loves! (We can even use it for skiing!) We scoot to school in all weathers and she is always super warm and never wet....

These ones are definitely waterproof and the hoods really keep us dry!

I've gotta say, I think Rainfrog are hard to beat for style, comfort and practicality. Barbour coats are brilliant, but they're BROWN! or BLUE! I'm really appreciating the more funky waterproofing of Rainfrog's range and they're also introducing a design that's padded and a bit warmer, apparently, for the horribly inclement weather that seems to be par for the course each winter now. Check them out when you're considering an investment in rain gear as I do think they're just a bit different.

Was searching for 'Waterproof coats' and G**gle sent me here though my offspring are all grown up. First it sent me to Amazon where there was quite and array of waterproof coats, I liked this one,

but I also like this one, which has matching trousers.

This thread should surely be in classics by now??????

MrsShrek3 · 27/10/2012 02:29

just read the whole thread (yes really) - it's taken me three nights. A kind mner linked it :) Now I know everything thanks to you lot and I've got a shortlist of three Grin

Fulltimeworkingmummy · 07/11/2012 08:29

Any new recommendations for this season? Wink

CraftyBec · 04/12/2012 14:56

I followed this thread when it first appeared - am not surprised it is still going! Finding one coat that both looks good and is practical is a holy grail. I bought a black Merrell Aberdine/Aberdeen coat for £110 in Field and Trek (aka Sports Direct) and it has been great. Can't remember if it was recommended here - I went into try the Merrell Wakefield (spotted in TK Maxx this autumn) but it swamped me. Last year I wore my coat from September through to July, whenever it was cold and wet. Occasionally I lust after something more colourful and fun, but it's definitely been a good purchase.

SilverSixpence · 04/12/2012 17:33

Has anyone got a uniqlo wool down coat? They look less plasticky but I suppose wouldn't be waterproof..

BrianButterfield · 04/12/2012 17:37

I started this thread as a one-stop shop for warm clothing reviews:

I just found GearforGirls.co.uk - Merrell and Northface coats discounted

RayofSun · 05/12/2012 23:03

Silver six, I ordered it online last week and it does look lovely. Cut in a nice style do not too bulky but just seemed too much of a compromise between a wool coat and a down jacket. Would have kept it though had I not ordered another cost that week! Material was nice and not shiny at all. Would have preferred black but only had navy although very dark.
